Thanks for broadcasting my article
It is my personal analysis of the hardware and its OS, with a guess of what could be the situation if running OS4: pitfalls, strengths, required actions, wishes, ...

I would be pleased to discuss all that.

And with or without OS4 on the hardware, I keep it at home.

@corto

You write that the processor is consuming 10W, but I fail to see how that is possible. I have a 5121e here and it uses exactly 2W as claimed by freescale. Roughly 2.5W with DDR2 and ethernet in use.

Just a translation problem?

The netbook itself (not the processor) uses 10 W while working. I measured that externally with a Wattmeter. The value was more to give an idea, it is not very accurate.
How have you measured on your board ?

For limebook, they should have access to all documentation and the HW is little simpler than powerbook.

Documentation may be more open, but still. Is it:

Simple to implement a PowerVR driver when the cocs arent fully open?
Simple to deal with the non cache cohenrent mem controller?
Simple to do a battery management?
Simple to do WLAN and ethernet?
Simple to do the audio driver?
Simple to make a display controller (brightness et al.)?

Eventually these are pretty much the same issues (except the mem controller) that delay the Powerbook MorphOS release year by year. Problem in Amigaland is easy: way too little resources. What a pity!

@Zylesea

>Simple to implement a PowerVR driver when the docs arent fully open?

Perhaps not simple.
But depending on the GPU used on the powerbook it could be simpler or harder.

>Simple to deal with the non cache cohenrent mem controller?

They have done that already before.
Using some undocumented apple northbridge might be harder.

>Simple to do a battery management?

If there is documentation vs. not documented....

>Simple to do WLAN and ethernet?
>Simple to do the audio driver?
>Simple to make a display controller (brightness et al.)?

Easier if there exist documents.

>Eventually these are pretty much the same issues (except the mem controller) that delay the Powerbook MorphOS release year by year.

Yes. If they have documents for the HW it should be easier than without.
(to my understanding there is no developer documents available for any Apple HW)

Anyway... the original release estimate was very optimistic.
While MOS team do not promise at all. Or did they promise MOS3 for last christmas?

>Problem in Amigaland is easy: way too little resources. What a pity!
And with enough money you get the access to almost any documentation.
(like after buying Apple )

+extra thing for Hyperion might be that the documentation exist mainly in Chinese.
What is harder ... reverse engineer linux sources to make drivers or read chinese...
hard to say. But there is no soul than can decipher code written by Chinese coders.

Anyway... To me it is a little miracle if Hyperion gets AOS(beta) for netbook out during this summer. Most likely alpha will be demoed anyway.

What I am wonder, why no screen shots of it booting the OS4 kernel? If there is active porting going on, wouldn't there be some screen shots of the netbook booting? It's getting a strong stench of vaporware at this point in time.

Perhaps if Ben would post a update for us?

@damocles

somewhere on a german forum one of the betatesters mentioned the both full time core developers are not so much heard of these days. i wonder if this is due to the workload or to the lack of involvement.

Why call it tricore?. it's silly, as the processor is clearly a single core. GPU could be inside the soc, but it is misleading regarding processors.
The cpu is single core.

Because someone in marketing had great idea "If we have CPU, GPU and (shitty) DSP on same chip it's Tricore!" By that logic they also marketed it as 800Mhz CPU.... 400Mhz CPU + 200Mhz GPU + 200Mhz DSP = 800Mhz!

Current measurement (on the +5.2V feed we use for our systems) while doing different tasks. Nothing fancy.

Seriously, this is an SoC. There's a limit to how much the chinese people have done around the main core. Just make OS4 boot on the ADS512101 eval board and you're 99% there. The rest is selecting which serial ports are serial ports, which pins are GPIO and how many bits wide is the RAM/Flash.

That's sort of the beauty of SoCs. They tend to have the same basic hardware every time

"why no screen shots of it booting the OS4 kernel?"

Yes, it would be nice to see from Amiga fan's point of view, but it seems developers could not care less about that PR stunt.
But after they miss the summer 2012 milestone, some news about the porting process would be nice to have.
(I think SMP work conflicts with the netbook kernel work resourcing & Gallium3D work might conflict with low level PowerVR support work. ... on the other hand, perhaps 4.2 and netbook will be launched at the same time .... further in the future)

btw. IIRC, one of the Friedens mentioned the netbook in some review not so long ago, anyone remember where it was? Was it at the roundtable??

in the meanwhile: Mockup pic from net)

@damocles

Ben could do the PR update.

But I believe anyone from the dev team (that has touched the HW and seen it run AOS) would be more trustworthy to inform about the status.

in the same time they care much for other pr stunts, this time without any substantial content. seems to be a preferred way.

instead there is interviews. i actually dont remember if os4 development leader mentioned the netbook in the recent one? i only recall he admitted not to have too much time to code anymore, possibly like the both full time developers. therefore there is always something to conflict with another, if there is too many further projects open, before the previous are about to complete.

I clearly recall that recording as being made well prior to when it was released (months). Rich (AmigaRoundTable) released it with the caveat of anything being said -not- being current info.

i'd love to see more news about the netbook too but it seems you have misunderstood what this product is.
Its not a laptop, its a netbook, you know.. low specced, small, basically useless for anything else than the most common things like browsing, mail and some office programs.

and there has never been mentioned it being magical...

we had this discussion just a mere month ago or so... and still you fail to understand what the product really is....

How about PR does the PR Job?

The Netbook is at our livingroom table..

OT. Could Someone tell me in English or Finnish what is embeded?

Is it like the C64 what was found inside a traffic light in England (?) not so long time ago after many years.

Machine to do the job just made for that. Is it embedded?

Ok from the Wiki:

The key characteristic, however, is being dedicated to handle a particular task. Since the embedded system is dedicated to specific tasks, design engineers can optimize it to reduce the size and cost of the product and increase the reliability and performance. Some embedded systems are mass-produced, benefiting from economies of scale.
Physically, embedded systems range from portable devices such as digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants.

So I have a few systems for the particular task. Now I know or are there any better explanation?

Our systems are not so cheap or mass produced.

Ediot: Reliable?
