OS4.1 and Trashcan

I installed OS4.1 on my uA1 a few weeks ago. Later I noticed thay my boot partition didn't have a Trashcan. I'm wondering if this is a feature of OS4.1, or if I did something (maybe I formatted it without a Trashcan). Another factor is my boot partition is SFS/00. I understand this comes with a hidden trashcan. I'm not sure what's going on. I may try to create a Trashcan directory by hand, which should then behave like the Trashcan, in other words I'll be able to empty trash, etc.

@thinkchip

No it's not a new "feature", OS4.1 has a trash can, and can use BenchTrash as well, that's what I have. Is it possible that the drive was formatted with the trash can box un-checked?

As a side note, well question realy...

I never understood the function of a trashcan. If I delete files they normaly just go away. If I want to remove files, but not for ever, I move them to a drawer called 'dump' or whatever. Also If I want to make use of the wb's trashcan I have to move the files to the trashcan myself... WTF ??

Anyway i understood that benchtrash or other trash-tools do that for you, but I still prefer a 'dump' or 'getridofitbutnotjustyet' drawer

So anyone have any clarification on the standard WB trashcan ?
Or can anyone convince me to use benchtrash ?

Cheers

Martin

edit: hmmm, time to get rid of bummed santa....

@thinkchip

SFS has an "undelete" directory called ".recycled" in the root of every partition. In this directory are all files that are deleted or overwritten(!) placed, but there is no guarantee they will stay there forever. I believe there is a limit of how many files that can be in this directory. Also, if the partition becomes full, files will automatically be removed from the .recycled directory.

What makes .recycled so much better than the normal Trashcan is that it is global in the entire system. The Trashcan only gets filled up with files deleted in and by Workbench itself, not by files deleted from Shell/CLI or any other program. It also doesn't receive files that are overwritten.

I have personally never used Trashcan because I hardly ever use Workbench for file management (I never delete files from WB and therefore Trashcan will never be used). PFS and SFS with their .deldir and .recycled respectively are much more useful to me, even though they are less reliable over time.
