Hi All,

Today I took a look on my blog at the new recently released HD Audio sound card driver for the X1000.

I also include a small (hopefully) helpful guide for those people trying to play subsongs of custom modules using TuneNet under AmigaOS4.1.

Links to the blog entries are below:

I hope you enjoy them!

Great blog !

And with the new sound driver, even the front sound jack works.
Really useful.

@zzd10h

I didn't try that yet!

I should have tried it, but since the mixer doesn't work yet I can't use headphones via the front jack - because without the mixer I can't adjust the volume output to the headphones for all applications under AmigaOS4, only programs like Tunenet and programs with a volume slider.

Nevertheless I'll give it a go shortly!

hi
Do you get any sound in Quake3 and quake2 with the new HDAudio driver to X1000?
I get sound in all other programs and games but with new driver in quake3 and quake2 sound is gone!

@Plexus

Hi!

I tested quake 2/3 as you mentioned and sure enough, I don't get sounds either through the HDAudio soundcard.

Looking into, without being an expert in AHI at all, it looks like the "Music Unit" setting on my X1000 is set to Unit 0:HiFi 16bit Stereo++

For Unit 0, it is set to hdaudio: 16bit stereo++

"Music Unit" from my understanding is used as the default for low level programs.

"Unit 0" is apparently used for programs that write directly to AUDIO: device.

From my testing the "Music Unit" test sounds work fine in the AHI preferences, the Unit 0 modes do not.

My guess is that the Workbench is using Music Unit for audio playback, and Quake 2 is using Unit 0...

Now if someone can explain how "music unit" is able to use Hifi 16 bit Stereo++ (with older device.audio) when the only soundcard present is the inbuilt HDAudio card I would very much appreciate it!

If I didn't know better I would suspect that the OS is somehow using the older driver output through the integrated hdaudio card...surely this isn't possible! I assume it must be using the new driver.

The newer HDAudio driver as part of Unit 0 doesn't appear to do anything when using the AHI preferences "Play a test sound" which fuels my suspicion about the cause of new audio in quake2...

There were no instructions I saw for the install of the HDAudio driver - it was installed automatically by AmiUpdate. Is there any post-configuration needed?

In any case, I just played around with the AHI settings a bit selecting other modes, then 16bit stereo++ mode on Music Unit and Unit 0 and now audio works in Quake 2 & 3....so weird.

Epsilon

I am away from home and Amigas this week.. so my responses will be a bit "untested".

Quote:

That might have something to do with it. All supported modes are HiFi.
Frankly I don't know how you got a non HiFi mode to even appear.

I don't understand the question.. Whether the chip is on board or on card doesn't make much difference. But if you can explain the question I'll take a shot at giving an answer.

Try this: In prefs/AHI, select EACH of the five units, and verify the volume setting is reasonable and a mode is selected.. all the modes available should be HiFi varieties.
then save your settings.

Finally, if you'd like further testing or support, the Hyperion forums are available. Raising the issue there will result in lots of others testing, verifying, and reporting of any issues found for correction.

@lylehaze

Thanks for the assistance! I tried as you suggested and set all of the Units in AHI prefs to HDAudio Hifi 32bit and saved the settings.

After the reboot I can confirm the audio is now set to use the new HDAudio driver and the sound still works. The old driver is no longer being used.

I note that as you said, it is necessary to change ALL AHI units to the new setting. Changing one unit is not sufficient.

General OS4 audio is working ok, although now I have the same problem already reported that quake2 and quake 3 audio doesn't work now using HDAudio driver.

Audio breakup in RunInUAE is also still present under emulation, even for simple ECS ADF games.

Any tips on how I can resolve the audio breakup in RunIn UAE? This didn't happen at all on the older driver and original PCI soundcard with the X1000...

I will continue testing.

Epsilon

(UAE) Paula sound has be emulated, so if you have sound issues there then it might have some thing to do whit emulation.

I'm trying to test this myself, but can't get Quake 3 operational, I just get DSI/Grim Reaper.
I'm using the Frieden release on OS4depot. It uses minigl, so are you using a 3D graphics card, wazp3d, something else?

Hi Epsilon, I have the same config than you I think.

I use onboard sound card with Lyle driver on my X1000.

I have tested Quake 2 and sound effect works perfectly.

and I have no problem under RunInUAE, no crackling sounds.

I have tested KickOff2 and BeachVolley.

For which game do you have problem for that I try it ?

Maybe a difference, I run Quake 2 and RunInUAE on my Radeon9250 card...

My selected AHI device is

Music Unit
hdaudio: HIFI 32 bit 7:1 channel++
frequency 48000hz
volume +0.0db (maximum right)
Monitor Mute (max left)
Gain +0.0db (max left)
Input Front Mic (max left)
Output All (max left)

Hope this help

@zzd10h

Thanks for the info..
Since I am away from home and I don't usually play games, I have been completely unable to check this out. If it works for at least one user, I have a little more confidence.
Interesting point about graphics card difference.

@Plexus

One of the best parts of the community is the help we give each other to solve problems. If it gets "solved" here then great! But if you want support from the official channels, please consider posting about this at the Hyperion support forums. :)

@zzd10h

Sorry for the delayed response. I tried adjusting the sound settings to match yours, but after a reboot I had no sound at all!

I changed back to HDAUDIO: Hifi 32bit stereo ++ and my sound was back again.

I use Radeon 9250 for RunInUAE normally and sound issues were never previously an issue until I changed the sound card to use the HDAudio driver.

I still get the same issues in RunInUAE and Quake 2/3 as before.

Next I tried changing RunInUAE to use the HD graphics card rather than the 9250 and the sound was much better in RunInUAE this way - not as good as before, but more useable in games and some demos.

I notice that the sound gets much worse the more movement is happening on screen - eg, the beach volley intro screen scrolling up....

Amongst others, I have been testing the following games and demos via RunInUAE to try to troubleshoot this issue:

Games:
Beach Volley
Mega Lo Mania
R-Type

Demos:

Mad Elks - Technological Death
Spaceballs - State of the Art

(All are ADF format)

I also use my A2000 wb 1.3 hd emulated via RunInUAE and on the HD graphics card the sound is much improved over the 9250, but not perfect...

I ran Frogatto (OS4) and Amicygnix with no audio issues on the Radeon 9250 using the HDAudio driver...just seems to be RunInUAE and Quake2/3 with problems so far..

Something funky going on here, but can't isolate it yet.

Catcha,
Epsilon

I'm thinking you have been testing a lot of programs, maybe your running some programs that take more CPU or memory then you think.

If it was me I strip down s:user-startup and wbstartup prefs.
If your running OWB or TimberWolf in the background then thats a bad idea.

Anything that uses Warp3d / MiniGL sucks, I hope for a new 3D system soon.
