Hello

- I am now finishing theme and I have a problem: if I Drag and Drop files from Workbench to Filer - sometimes it COPY files and sometimes it MOVES files [!?]

How to Drag files from one place to another and BE SURE it will be COPIED [not moved???]

I've tried all possible shortcuts [holding ALT, AMIGa etc] while dragging files - no luck.

- Also one question: Is there commodity that will allow me to use

SHIFT+ESC [or CTRL+ESC]

for CLOSING Workbench windows? Only ESC works [in Filer] and RightAmiga + K [which is not easy to hit with left hand]...

@djnick

it's a move if on same partition, copy if on different one, I believe. This is (I believe) the same as on Windows.

I think you're only just touching on the raison d'ętre for the various file handlers available (Directory Opus et al) for Amiga. Workbench is ok for launching things which have icons, for most other tasks it's just a little bit underpowered.

Select the file, then choose "icon -> copy" from the menu. This will create a copy_of_xxxx file in the same drawer. Now move that copy to the destination and rename it back to its original name.

I suggest to use DOpus or similar, too.

Hold RAmiga when you drop the file. That at least causes a copy rather than a move if the file is on the same volume. I'm unsure what it does across volumes (it might cause a move).

AllKeys.

Assign a command like rx "address workbench 'window close'"

Actually FKey might work too, I forget if it allows assigning keys other than the function keys.

Yep, that is standard behaviour across pretty much all OSes as standard, although they tend to have qualifiers like shift for altering behaviour.

If you're just using workbench windows or Filer windows you can use copy and paste, just don't think it works when mixing the two...

@Chris_Y

Excellent! Thanks!

Btw I suppose I do miss something. I've read that it exports text file to envarc:AllKeys.prefs

There I have this command line:

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND rx "address workbench 'window close'"

but when click CTRL+ESC I got error:

1 *-* address workbench 'window close';
+++ Command returned 10

Not easy for ordinary user at all...

@djnick

Use StringIns in fkey to change the shift esc to ramiga-k...

Set command to 'run program' and command parameters to:

stringins delay=0 keystring="\mk"

If you need something left handed then try LCOMMAND c, far easing to hit than shift-esc and easy to remember, c for close...

@djnick

You can also use the context menu. Right click over icon, Copy, select desination, Paste.

@Hypex

Well the biggest problem is non-working copy/paste between Filer and OS... :( Thats why I am forced to use Drag and Drop, depends where I am at the moment.

Thank you guys. Now Amiga looks fun when everything is on place. :) I will check those keys a bit later.

The first argument to the 'window' command is the name of the window. This can be either the path to the icon, for example 'Workbench:' or the special name 'active'

So the correct ARexx command to execute is

address workbench 'window active close'

@thomas

Thank you. But sorry for being dumb but I now get Grim reaper :(

My command line in Envarc:Allkeys.prefs is

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY RXCOMMAND="rx" COMMAND address workbench 'window active close'

My system is Sys: [called AmigaOS:]... I really have no connection with coding... this is all new to me...

So what exactly would be the command to replace with Allkeys.prefs one?

I would recomend adding some 'filer' entries to your context menus if you use them.

In this case if you have a workbench window open you can then right click for the context menu on an area of the window with no icon and select 'open in filer'. Then do your copy between filer windows, either by using copy / paste or the way I prefer, by making one filer window the destination and selecting the files you want to copy from the other, copying using the button in the button row at the top of the filer. I prefer that way as it's more precise, you can't see what files you are copying when they are held in the 'clipboard'.

Perhaps we have different keyboard layoust but on my keyboard RAmiga is 70mm from K and CTRL is 100mm from ESC so I would say RAmiga K is easier to hit

I don;t actualy use allkey myself but looking at that line you have 'rx' as an arexx command C:rx is not an arexx command but a CLI command that executes arexx scripts so your line should be either...

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY RXCOMMAND="address workbench 'window active close'"

or

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND="rx address workbench 'window active close'"

That's almost right. The Rexx command needs to be enclosed in quotation marks.

The right command to be executed is

rx "address workbench 'window active close'"

Now I don't know how you can add quotation marks in strings already surrounded by quotation marks in AllKeys.

This for sure will not work:

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND="rx "address workbench 'window active close'""

But this might work:

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND="rx *"address workbench 'window active close'*""

or this:

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND="rx \"address workbench 'window active close'\""

depending on how AllKey is implemented.

@thomas

A quick test at the shell shows that you can remove the inner single quotes from the command so

CODE=$800800C5 CLASS=RAWKEY COMMAND="rx 'address workbench window active close'"

probably would work in this case.

Thank you for your help, unfortunatelly adding this text to envarc:allkeys.prefs results errors appearing [when start Allkeys]...

Maybe the best would be - when start AllKeys - what to type where? For example - in columns Code there is $800800C5, incollumn Explanation there is CTRL + Esc (upstroke),
Translate into is empty, ARexx Port is rx, Arexx Command is rx and Command is rx "address workbench 'window active close'"?

Also this combination does not work.

[I could imagine how would somebody out of amiga world react when start this program] :) I already lost my nerves :D

This is good idea. Btw I was just wanted to ask - where is context menus preferences? I was searching but without luck... I would like to add that [or some other] menus / prefs on right click.

Other than that - I've just finished my 1st theme and the only problem right now is - color on MUI OWB [or other MUI programs] - when for example click anywhere on MuiOWB with right mouse button there is small menu that appears above mouse with "Back" and "Reload". Currently when mouse-over the menu, background is white but also text below it is also white. Does somebody knows where to edit text colors so instead white text will appear black?

Either:
(a) ditch the contents of "ARexx port" and "ARexx command"
or
(b) wipe out "Command" and set the ARexx fields to:
ARexx port: WORKBENCH
ARexx command: WINDOW ACTIVE CLOSE

It's not the most intuitive program in the world, but once it's set up you don't need to worry about that any more.
