Hi everyone,

After being able to get hold of a Sam460 second hand I am going to be able to join the OS4 party.

Although I am not a coder as I mentioned in a thread I started Sept 2011 Link I am willing to offer my services to anyone who wants an installer writing

It will probably take me a few days to get used to using Workbench again and then I will need to start to relearn what I knew about writing install scripts but if anyone has any need for an installer script please let me know & I will work on it as I learn.

It's been along while since I last had my 1200 with OS3.9 on so I am looking forward to seeing and feeling the difference in performance. I am also looking forward to whether I can be of any use to the OS4 community.

Welcome back. Has it been that long? I certainly welcome a friendlier way to install software. If we had some kind of default place to store programs it would help. I'm thinking a set of applications installed from a particular installer that automated things would help. So for example anything needing paths or assigns would be catered too without a need to mess up systems files. And programs depending on another could work together. As well as an easier way to upgrade programs.

Just some ideas I've had. Some scripts could be built up for existing software to integrate them into the system or even to add them from an existing install, A program or guide file could be written to chose software that is then downloaded if needed and installed. Just part of the EasyInstaller system I'm thinking about.

@Amiboy

Welcome (back), and I hope you get as much pleasure from your new AmigaOS system as I enjoy with mine!

So, tell us about your new system. Got it in nice/cool case? What kind of graphics card?

@mbrantley

My system is:

Full Sam460
1TB 3.5" HDD
Using Onboard sound
PCI-E Radeon HD6570 graphics card
SATA DVD writter
SIL3114 4 port SATA card
AmigaOne keyboard
Coolermaster Centrurian 5 case

Currently putting on the hard drive what I can from the CDs I have lying round, but I need to try and recover the data from my towered 1200's hard drive. I currently have no way to access it since my 1200 decided to not play nice.

Is your old HD an IDE one? If so, it should be possible to mount it as a drive in your Sam via a SiI0680 card; this will of course have to use the PCI slot where your SATA card is currently (I assume), so to be able to use your main hard disk at the same time, you'd have to switch it to using the built-in SATA port temporarily. See the manual; you have to both move a jumper and make a change in the UBoot menus. But from there, you should be able to copy all your data over to the main HD.

Another possibility (which I haven't tested myself) could be to use an external USB-connected HD enclosure, if you can find one for IDE disks, and put your old HD in that. Saves you making changes to the Sam's configuration.

Best regards,

Niels

Thanks Niels I think the external caddy idea would work best & I may even have one lying around my house somewhere! Cross fingers and hope I find it
