| I use GMPlay to play midi songs on my classic Amiga. A GUI for it makes the life easier. On the AmigaOne I guess there must be some player which would use the Soundcard, as it have the midi instruments built-in.
P.S. There are alternative samplepacks for better sound -gmtones1 and gmtones2.
P.P.S. midi sucks. _________________ Games, programs, reviews |

"P.P.S. midi sucks."
Only if you leave it to a computer. ^.~ Get some proper MIDI hardware, and MIDIs arranged for that hardware, and you'd change your mind. |

But what's the support like for it? I've got a SBLive! Platinum. Unlike the earlier AWE series, this uses system RAM to hold soundfonts (no onboard wavetable) - getting the thing to work under Linux seemed awful (I never did) and I doubt AmigaOS would be any better. Then there's the Live!Drive - out of windoze, its useless. Even the headphone jack doesn't work And while I'm sure there must be a way, using the MIDI ports on the front seemed impossible. I don't use any of the more "pro" features like optical in/out, SPDIF, 5.1 speaker support, but I'm sure Linux users have a hard job (and AOS users even more so).
Sorry for the rant _________________

| A Sound Blaster card of any type is not "proper MIDI hardware" regardless of whether it has on chip wavetable or not. If you want a cheap easy linux option for playing midi files get timidity, same goes for Windows and MacOS.

Hi there,
I've tried to install playmidi and the GMPlay Gui but it slows down the Amiga1.
But when it was used with my A4000 there weren't any problems.
OK, have a nice day. _________________ RedOneX (SAM 460ex) and an A1 which now rests quite. Amiga OS 4.1.6 and CinemaWare games. Classic and NG softwares. |

Actually, it's not too hard to use it in Linux. I have, although it's not particularly good however you use it; I used it for its gameport MIDI, with my external modules. Unfortunately, this isn't supported under OS 4 at the moment. :( |

| @Wain Note that; _Microsoft includes a licensed Roland GS SoftSyn (executed in host MPU) in recent Windows releases. _CL SB Audigy** includes SF (sound font) and DLS loading. Both played with HW assisted acceleration.
In terms of render quality, I don?t think timidity on Win32 is competitive enough against Yamaha SoftXG50.
**Emu10Ks are designed for digital signal processing.

PCI reduces the need for onboard memory.

Middleware issues i.e. refer to KX project as ideal example of an ?open source? driver development (Win32).

Until Linux camp selects a single middleware audio infrastructure the development of LiveWare style suites would be hindered. Note that ReactOS is an open source Windows NT/2K.

| MIDI is very well supported on AmigaOS 4. The great tools from Lyle Hazelwood I use a lot with my Korg PA 50. In fact I found that MIDI is better supported and easier to install on AmigaOS 4 than on Windows 7 - you need a hack there, or MacOS X - still didn't found a proper software for USB2MIDI for my PowerBook G4.
So I ended using MIDI on Amiga with Bars&Pipes, Horny, CAMD tools. Best of all the Amiga MIDI software is free. The only expense I had was the USB2Midi cable - $4.31 with free shipping from China (Ebay).

Thank you very much!
I have enjoyed building up the MIDI support, and I'm not finished yet.
The fix for camd gameport interfaces is in the pipeline.
Expect an update to BarsnPipes within a week, with a few new fixes and features.
Also, I took ALL of today to work on Score, and it is really getting good! There was a long-standing bug that caused notes to get hung, I finally found the root cause (both of them!) and that particular bug is behind us.
I'm going to see how far I can push it before the show in Sweden, I have less than two weeks for that. Hopefully it will be ready to share a pre-release at the Depot shortly after.
I have been slow to update for a couple months, as other work has kept me quite busy. But the music will keep on playing!
