WOA shows, FA Cup Final Day

Perhaps this should be in the Free for All area?

FA Cup Final day in the UK always reminds me of World of Amiga Shows; I'm pretty sure that the WOA show, certainly the '98 and '99 ones coincided with the FA Cup Final - as I was sitting in London earlier waiting for my train I reflected about the WOA shows; I can remember sitting on a bench outside one of them ('99 I believe) and having a brief chat with Richard Drummond (he won't remember) whilst he had a ciggy, and at the '98 show I met Dave Pleasance... and bought a 32MB simm for my Viper board and Genetic Species.. oh the memories!

I can remember going to the shows, trying to spot fellow Amigans (quite successfully, we all look... similar ) and chatting to people about the latest stuff, which by comparison was much, much more than we have now. I really miss that, it was a day out as well! (yes I do get out, living 30 mins from London by train but you know what I mean)

Anyone else remember these shows?

Rude!

@Rudei
I only went to the 2001/2002 shows and I think the venue was different than earlier shows. As far as memories go I think it was a sad time for Amiga, start of the red/blue camps etc.I still have the photos and would be happy to send them to you if you're interested. I would post them here but I can't get the sizes right.

@Rudei

I can't remember which one it was, but I went down to London to the hotel in Kensington. The Coventry and Warwickshire Commodore Computer Club (CWCCC) had a table downstairs with all the other user groups. I think we were sat next to the SEAL guys and sat opposite a competition to win loads of Click Boom games. Everybody was playing T-Zero and doing so badly I just had to have a go. I managed to win some games which was great, but I think I was only second place. I was first place right up until the very last minute, but it was great fun to watch.

I remember sneaking some beer into Jim Collas`s speech about the mmc and stuff. Everyone was cheering, it was great. Those days were great.

Yes, those were the days - driving down from Norwich to London on cup final day.

I recall attending two WOA shows. On the first occasion I purchased a 14.4k modem from Power Computing, introducing me to the wonderful world of BBS and (costly) national rate calls.

I believe the second time was a few years later, with AB3DII-TKG being demoed on two A1200s over a serial link-up. I too recall bumping into Dave Pleasance, who was probably promoting his album, while auctioning off rare Amiga hardware, including an A3500 tower.

Great days!

Cheers,
James

And now you are in Japan? Any adventures there?

Ahh yes.
Hiding from Neil Bothwick/Jeff Capes after my pint glass exploded in the CU Amiga stand and sprayed everyone and thing with Guiness.

Having a conversation about Amiga related technobabel and then the shock opon realising that the people I was speaking to actually understood what I was talking about.

Buying a ruddy big monitor then remembering I came in a very small aircraft that was already at maximum weight and having to send it home by post which cost more than the monitor.

Wishing I was invisible when I realised the bonny girls I talked to on the Tube were still with me as I neared a building covered in signs that said "Geeks here! Look at the freaky geeks! Come stare at the geeks!" Then the massive relief as they came into the same building and produced their tickets.

Getting drunk with soft/hardware legends and then forgetting their names and having to call everyone "mate" which ####ed everyone off.

I'd better stop there lest I refresh a memory best left forgotton.

@Rudei
I remember those great days with fondness, still remember the "Men in black" incident. I miss those days though.

I also miss not being involved in organising any more Amiga shows.

Ah, good times.
