From: a place & time long long ago, when things mattered.

From Slashdot:

Quote:
A Japanese newspaper and the AP report that China plans to demand source code from hardware manufacturers, and ban the sale of products from companies that don't comply. China is calling this an "obligatory accreditation system for IT security products." The plan is to go into effect next May, according to sources.

Well, that depends. They're certainly big enough that not selling products in China would hurt. However, if hardware manufacturers only have to provide the Chinese government with the code, instead of providing everyone with it, then this is just a way for the Chinese government to force companies to hand over industrial secrets. If, on the other hand, they have to open-source it all then Linux users/driver-developers will be very happy.

China wants the code so they can develope backdoors in to networks to do their spying and possibly make clones. Manufactures that plan to do businenss in China should just go ahead and install a backdoor and give China the key.

If you choose not to due business in China over this, your product will just be pirated and sold anyway. I just don't see a win here. Rampant pirating and a military that can back it up.

China are going to find themselves with nothing modern then aside from any reverse engineered clones (which they churn out by the bucket load anyway) since no sane company is going to just hand over the sourcecode to their software (or design schematics) to the Chinese government just so that they can sell their product there.

This is a severe case of foot, gun, shoot. I think the Olympics have gone to their head.

Even with Google...

And it is bad, afaik they forced them to give out emails from dissendents, so they could arrest them.

I go a course atm, and we have a parallel course with international students, mostly Chinese, and last week there was some practice involving tracert/traceroute, and during tracing against Chinese websites, there was 2-3 "anonymous" servers on the way, nothing similar in Europe/US/Oceania, and they explained it was "just some government servers with unknown purpose".
Propably just to keep track of all in and outbounding Internet traffic to and from China.

Who thought Communism was dead and buried? This beggars beyond belief, but I feel there is a simple solution if this comes into play.

Developers unite and all agree not to comply

Sure, there is a risk of piracy but as a matter of principle and also not to give in to an oppressive communist government.
As the old saying goes "give them an inch and they will take a mile".

I seem to have a weak remembrance that the EU demanded Windows source code (at least parts of it) 2 or 3 years ago from M$...

Okay, red scum, you can have the source code to various OS's and apps when you stop selling poisoned food and toys.

(We'll wait.)

China wants all information for they can develop theirs own technology without cost for them, they already have done this politic with other enterprises, they offer low hand work but some companies have seem as theirs products were and are copy in competence with their own products, I heared this with some spanish and german companies in China, now they have the China's companies as enemies and rivals with the technology of these european companies but with chinese products more low cost although of worst quality.

But the guilt is now to buy their products instead of european products, more expensive but, well, made by europeans.
