Then why do they insist on their closed-source model with the license fees?

They prefer to have their code closed, that's it. From what I understand cash from registrations is paying for hardware, hosting, etc. If I had a band where I play in my spare time I'd still be happy to get few bucks for gas and beer. Having hobby is great, having self-sustainable hobby is better.

@OlafS25

Without the pressure by users MorphOS 3.0 would not be out now

I think your crystal ball needs some cleaning.

@opi

I said more or less profit driven and there I meant MorphOS...

But I agree that the will is lacking. But i have seen that users pressed them and they reacted. So even in this case users would have power as customers.

I mean coverage of drivers, not platforms. On most platforms AROS runs hosted on Linux, so it has no peripherial device drivers at all. AROS has almost no single driver for chips and devices found in hardware supported by MorphOS. There is even no native AROS for PowerPC.

@g_kraszewski

that was my personal impression when i read the different forums and the discussions there between core developers and users...

and users were requesting merging between platforms (in this case between Aros and MorphOS).

How one can merge an open source operating system with a closed source one?

@g_kraszewski

Let me see:
"sam440-ppc-boot-iso

The native version for Sam440EP and Sam440EP Flex computers. This is the bootable CDROM ISO image including ub2lb (Parthenope) SLB. It contains all AROS system and contributed programs."

And one for efika...

Aros runs alone AND hosted there are different distributions as you know, Linux hosted is only one version. It also runs alone (on X86, on 68k)

@g_kraszewski

common parts could be opensource and there could be commercial components added, f.e. a different GUI. I do not think that this would be a serious problem. You use parts like Poseidon from Aros in MorphOS and MorphOS is commercial.

And one for efika...

I don't know how good this Sam440 version is, but Efika one is hardly usable and - as fas as I know - completely abandoned. Plus Efika is the weakest MorphOS platform, what about Apple hardware and AROS? Or even Pegasos 2 and AROS?

I do not know and I think there is not much interest outside. But I will ask Jason (the maintainer of PPC) what he thinks about it. Is there interest from your side?

with outside i mean outside the small community...

I have to leave now. If there comes real interest from the morphos camp i would try to make the connections

ROTFL, nice try. Poseidon was ported to AROS years after first being included in MorphOS.

Quote:
On a low level the MorphOS team already does that with Aros drivers.

There's not a single AROS based driver included in MorphOS 3.0.

Quote:

That's just speculation which has nothing to do with reality.

The only thing you can do is supporting development of open standards (opensource) and force the camps to take over these standards.

Ah, but they don't have to be opensource! A good example is both AROS/Zune and AmigaOS4' MUI3.9 aiming to catch up to MorphOS' MUI4.0 standards.

You use parts like Poseidon from Aros in MorphOS

Seriously you should stop here and check your facts. I do not want to use strong words, so I would just say it is not true.

@blitter:

please stop posting these unnecessary threads over and over again. havnt you learn from your previous feedback that your demands are hopeless and there is none noteworthy that would support that? it really looks like you just want to talk, because why in heaven should people who do real work (on platforms of their choice) bow to your will? this is really egotic in my eyes.

My personal point of view on this situation that matured so far is: if we cannot make companies and developers work and talk with each other, at least their systems and applications should:

Binarydoodles - cooperare necesse est

@wawa
btw recently Linus declared that the success of Linux is mostly devoted to 'selfishness' meant as developers trying to scratch their own itch first and then sharing the resulting work with others; each one of us i think has its own private agenda together with social goals for what we like; it is human nature to do so and make us feel good when it also brings positive changes on people around us...

@saimon69

Therefore there will be no consortium only free spontaneous cooperation.

Mainly because of the delay in the atheros driver :P

I do not know that this discussion ends in the typical "amiga-way". So lets stop and forget this...
