That's the thing though, like I said in my other post people whom use pirate stuff are generally the type whom would never buy/ pay for that particular piece of software in the first place, so as controversial as it may sound they simply aren't losing anyone sales over it nor affecting the livelihoods of anyone...

You probably won't agree with that but it's just as simple statement of fact from personal experience of using Commodore machines and knowing Commodore users for over 30 years...

It's not going to take away sales from anyone, in fact it will probably result in just the opposite, as if someone downloads a pirate copy of 4.x tries it out and likes it then they may well buy it so they can get any upgrades when their available...

Torrent sites often give download figures. This is why I say OS4.x has been pirated quite a bit. Because it has. Whether or not people use those pirated versions I have no idea, but it has been pirated thousands of times.

I couldnt give a smeg as to whether people pirate or not. I just found it unusual that people would pirate something they get with the hardware they buy (hence my actual question, that all but a few seemed unable to comprehend (selectively it appears), despite me repeating it). This has been well and truly answered by now though.

Yeah, its "funny". Despite the logic in what youve mentioned (with which I agree), Ive yet to see any sort of piracy of MorphOS while browsing torrent sites, while piracy of OS4.x seems to happen quite a bit.

Because any piracy of MorphOS itself would need some serious cracking.

I was wrong! Try looking for MorphOS keyfile. Sites like Megaupload or Rapidshare will have some results. (most are again fakes)

They have automatic results of anything you search, it's just advertising.

Thousands! Well, there is probably less OS4 capable machines than that. Maybe some try to use OS4 in WinUAE? Or these numbers are from some download bots?

@fishy_fis

I think its put out there because some wont to do harm, but I don't think its actually is harming.

The AmigaOS4.0 version of was sold whit the AmigaONE – SE/XE/Micro, and is not useful to people that have AmigaOS4.1, And you don't get any updates if you have a pirated version, so most people who use it is going to own it.

So who are the people that are interested in the pirate version? Well there the classic users who has to buy it, or the people who wont to try out the Moana project, then you have the ignorant that think they can run it on some hardware X or emulator, not knowing its PowerPC and not PC, and or not knowing that you need drivers to for the hardware. Then you some people who forget there username and password or lose there CD or what ever.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Over the years I've come across a number of people who just download everything they can find. They'll download film rips of films they don't want to see, games they don't want to play - anything. Sometimes just for bragging rights, so they can say they have 5,000 films or whatever.

In this case, though, I think the simple explanation is that many people don't realise they don't have the hardware to run it, and many people think they can somehow get it to run in an emulator. Anyone willing to stump up the cash for an OS 4-capable machine isn't likely to be the kind of person to then steal the OS.

Most likely explanation of all though is simply that it's there as a torrent because some people will just share everything they can find, and that the actual download numbers are much, much smaller than the torrent sites claim. Most of those sites will regularly lie through their digital teeth to get more sponsors and advertisers - don't trust a single word they say.

Explain the music industry then? Before MP3s or music being digital there was a very health market in music because it was difficult to copy and share, now its easy to do so people who use to buy it dont anymore.

I think sales are lost by privacy, ok maybe not as much as sometime the market makes out, but still sales are lost and you may say it doesn't effect anyone these big companies can afford it and sometime deserve it but always the remember the people at the top usually making the decisions are the last to get effected its always the little people. I feel sorry to all the people who lost their jobs at blockbuster and HMV recently, and although i think it only part of the reason they when under I think privacy did'nt help them.

Probably this. Seeing the name "AmigaOS" people may mistakenly assume it works on an Amiga.

.iso image? I don´t think so. Only CDTV and CD32 were sold with CD drive. (assuming your reply was not OS4 bashing as usual )

It seems funny, there have likely been more downloads of aOS 4.x than there are machines to run it! If only some of those were programmers that could resurrect PearPC as an AmigaOS emulator.

But it does if you have a Amiga1200 whit blizzard PPC or Amiga4000 whit cyberstom PPC, anyway I love to see their frustration on their faces when they try it on wannabe hardware (WinUAE).

Actually, many people think 4.1 classic version works on 68k systems, and even UAE... I regularly get such question when talking to Amiga-interested people, who don't follow the nextgen world closely... And about being an ISO: 3.9 was also released on a CD... :)

@Thread:
To my experience, OS4 piracy is primarily directed towards Pegasos II and PowerUp Amiga - so to systems, which you could buy without OS4 when they were new. People with these systems seem to be curious, but OS4 is quite pricey, and sometimes can be a hassle to buy (waiting several weeks to arrive, plus no way to try beforehand, so buying blindly), they obviously wanna go along the fast lane and grab it by torrent... This is clearly something for the companies who sell OS4 to address, IMO, because blaming your potential customers and calling them criminals is just stupid...

About MorphOS piracy: since the above is not true for MorphOS, so it's freely available for anyone to try it's less of a concern if it's made available via torrent or not. With MorphOS, the real value is the keyfile, and circumwenting that would need quite a cracking effort. Putting individual keyfiles available again, just doesn't make any sense... And registering MorphOS can be as fast as several minutes in ideal case... So why would you warez something which you can get easily?

Seriously? Im not sure you thought that one out very well.
So you're suggesting that only cdtv and cd32 users run os3.5/3.9 (both of which come on cd only).

Myst, Napalm, Quake, Earth 2140, the dozens of aminet cds, and the majority of commercial titles released in the last few years of the (classic) amigas life were on cd. Pretty much all major magazines also came with cover mounted cds.
Sorry guy, but suggesting people may not assume something will work on an amiga 'cos it's an iso image is pretty bizarre. The Amiga was an early adopter of cds.
