@Bugala

It is a bit of an issue when your whole life is tied to a phone in some ways, but that is why I do everything through Google. It is easy then to move around. I am not into Social Networking at all, but Google Voice (to make cheap Skype-out calls to land line and mobile numbers) and Gmail are my main tools. I use Google to store my telephone contact list as well.

This makes the transfer issue mute for me and I am free to move from phone to phone at will...

My battery for my Sony Xperia is almost dead too... as it is a work phone I will get work to purchase a new one next week for me.

... and that's exactly what happened to the Amiga. In 1985 it was just mindblowing, in 1987 it was way better than anything one could buy at a reasonable price, but by the early 1990s PCs in the same price range already had similar if not better graphics (SVGA) and just plain better audio (sound blaster 16). Read the interviews with Dave Haynie and you'll see how CBM management kept killing engineering efforts to improve the hardware. I expect that unless Apple gets out of the creative rut it's in right now, Google is going to eat their lunch and we're all going to be stuck with crappy android tablets.

@CodeSmith

Regarding the hardware, were the improvements meant to be the development and release of the AAA chip-set, or was Dave H eluding to further developments beyond AAA?

Also would AAA have actually competed like for like to 90's era PC's. In other words if AAA was released, would Amiga's have had native SVGA (or better) graphics and full blown 16bit audio. (From what I remember AAA was supposed to have brought 16bit audio).

Lastly, why do you think Android tablets are crappy? Do you prefer the Apple or Microsoft offerings instead, and if yes, why?

AGA being delayed years, AA+, Hombre and the planned move to PA-RISC, etc. They had prototype motherboards with PCI slots when most PCs were still using EISA and VLB and end users had to manually enter interrupt settings into their games. Have you ever had to do such a thing on an Amiga, or on a PC with PCI slots?

About Android, nothing against the platform itself. The software is OK and Nexus devices are pretty good. The problem is that unlike Apple and MS, Google has very few quality controls on hardware. MS had this problem for many years and only recently started doing something about it - Apple's never had this problem because there are no 3rd party "Made for MacOS" or "Made for iOS" PCs or tablets. So we're seeing the equivalent of crappy e-machines in the latest flood of cheap plastic tablets with 1024x600 screens. Unless google does something about it, those will crowd out everyone else from the android market and that's all one will be able to buy. Apple's resurgence in the last decade saved the PC market from that fate, forcing MS to pressure their OEMs into upping their game, hence Surface (they can't just threaten them like they did in the 90s - the DOJ would love that!).

Thanks CodeSmith for your detailed answers. I must agree on the Android explanation... getting hundreds of similar "hardware" droids do crowd out the better hardware out there and kind of "waters down" the experience.

I think it is correct they up their game. It is the only way ensure true innovation and quality above quantity...

As far as I understand AAA was going to be a powerful beast, had it been properly funded (and so, finished in time).

There's a famous quote by Haynie itself that pretty much explains it all:

[AAA] would have been revolutionary if released in 1990, pretty cool in 1992, ok in 1994 (the
earliest it could have been released on the schedule we had, with a healthy Commodore).

If you haven't already, I'd suggest having a look here: http://www.thule.no/haynie/
