Nobody mentioned iOS so far? Very, very responsive on an iPad. Probably also true for Android, but I don't have much experience with it (only using it on a cheap smartphone).

I'm happy with OS X Snow Leopard. Nice and slick with none of the iOS Launch Pad/reverse touchpad scroll rubbish that was introduced in OS X Lion. The bloat of the dual Intel/PPC library versions was removed and backup using Time Machine is seamless.

In old days when I had Pegasos 1 with just 128 MB it was more than enough but these days there is so much data to process. Having more lightweight OS is not going to solve those problems...

Very strange. IMHO, OSX on 1.4Ghz G4 was fast like a snail in mud.
On the same HW MOS is insanely fast.

OS X is most definitely the most sluggish and unresponsive of all the modern operating systems I have tried, especially on systems with low amounts of RAM. Endless colorwheels and waiting for disk swapping which reminds me of how it was running Windows 95 with DriveSpace compression on a 486. Only after fitting 16GB RAM did my Mac Pro start behaving like the very expensive workstation it is sold as.

Some of the unresponsiveness is even caused by bad design decisions, like having to spin up all USB drives connected to the computer before even being able to display a file requester or an Open with... menu.

OS X might be a nice system because of the software avaliable for it, but "responsive" is not exactly what I would call it. System 7 on a 68040, now that's responsive if we are talking Macs.

But to be fair, it was quite fast and responsive during the Panther/Tiger days. Currently running 10.6, Lion seems horrible.

I don't really agree. I've found Lion ok on 4gb+ of RAM, though it's unusable with 2gb (yet Apple still still a 2gb Mac Mini, why??)

For me, the least responsive OS out there is Android. Even at 4.0, the touch response in Android is totally hit-and-miss. A swipe may occasionally register as a touch, or be ignored, or the resulting animation might be inexplicably slow and jumpy. At other times, it will respond instantly. There's some serious flaw there and it makes me wonder if Google will ever get Android running as smoothly as iOS or Windows Phone.

Yeah, because with amiga you can work on several erp platforms and doing productive work the majority of businesses need. Who in his sane mind would use another platform?.

I've had use of Amiga OS 2.x and 3.x releases... using both real Amigas and various UAE setups... along with AMIthlon.

I have also made use of Windows 3.x / 95[a/b/c] / 98[|se] / ME / NT / 2K[Workstation/Advanced/Adv.Server] / XP[Home|Professional||Server] / 2003[Server] | Vista[Ultimate] | 7 Enterprise [32|64]bit

Mac OS 7/8 and X[Snow Leopard and Tiger] during Helpdesk work...

Linux [Puppy(Japanese+English) | Gentoo | SourceMage | Debian | CentOS | Ubuntu | RedHat ] ...

of the above experiences... Amiga OS is the most responsive on any setup I have met

And I was also able to visibly show a loss of reaction speeds on the Windows and Mac systems...

Linux system responses varied very very wildly... from insanely responsive equal to the Amiga or insanely slowed down...

but the slower things got was based on how many processes were running... AmigaOS seems to have the lowest overhead when switching tasks...

I don't know all the details ... but the feel is AmigaOS is the fastest to respond...
and I know the scheduler in exec (the bit which decides what runs) is based on prioritised round-robin style so that everything gets a fair chance of processing time.

I only ever used Executive to change Task Priorities (anything that was a device I bumped way up...)
this didn't make much difference until I made use of some CPU intensive tasks... which when bumped down didn't lose much speed for the time used...

Everything felt better with an Amiga in front of me than any Windows or Mac machine...
Linux came close but it still felt "off"...

Just something about the feel makes it the best selection of OS for me at least

So when it comes to OS I would most like to program for... Amiga is it... so I am going to develop whatever I can as well

Never said that I added more and more RAM and came up with that 16GB was the minimum tolerable amount! It came with 3GB as default, which was much too little. I went directly for 16GB, and I almost haven't seen a colorwheel since.

No, AOS 3.9 has the fastest UI by far, that's why I use it most, it's hundreds of times faster than
Mac os UI and Winblows UI..

iOs I'd agree with, not Android though, it seems very laggy on most devices I've used it on and it always freezes up for a few seconds while it "thinks", just like Windows does.

yes this is certainly one of the aspects but this thread is more about the speed of "click something and something happens".

This is where the Amiga ruled the world for a long time since Windows (up to 2000/xp) was so full of litter and crap that it dragged the whole system down and also it didnt help that it was so badly designed from the get go either.

about functionality vs speed...

Amigalike OSs lack a lot of fancy things that can be found in mainstream OSs.
But when we implement those features we must be carefull to keep the system responsive, simple and efficient.

IMO, win"dos" and lin"Unix" have done a lot of things in the way where user experience has suffered a lot.
So, it's essential not to do same mistakes, even if we implement similar/same features. Everything can be improved (like the SW shutdown scenario).

Example/idea for viruskillers. When viruskillers do disk scans it must not flush OS disk cache, like it seem to do on mainstream. It should be easy to use more direct interface to HDD, that does not go true system cache.


btw. started to migrate main x86 boxes to Mint LXDE yesterday. More features and user friendliness than in bodhi, still pretty fast on slow (below 2Ghz & 1GB) HW.
Will be using it for a lot of productive stuff while setting Amiga systems up as well.
(slitaz, pinguy, bodhi, etc are too bugged and weird, puppy is my option for below 1Ghz machines) Need to deside what will be my main AROS tinkering box.

Never experienced more responsiveness than AmigaOS 4.x!

No comparison at all when run with limited resources.

I guess the speed is gained thanks to clever design, higly optimized source code and use of Assembly language for critical matters.

I wonder how the system would feel/respond like with 4ghz CPU and huge L2 cache...
Could we boot from BIOS to OS in 1 second without any speed up patches?

(if it on 1200MIPS takes 15 secs, 4Ghz chip can have 120 000MIPS, so the processing would take about 0.15 secs??? )

(if one blinks an eye, Amigalike OS would have enough time to do softreset? )

Imagine doing some reboot needing updates, then tell AOS4 to softreset (with quicksave+SWshutdown+restore). In about one second you would have full system back up again, with all the apps in front of you that you were just using before.
I think it would be pretty doable with small OS and smart apps.
(&disc cache could be let to "post mortem" restore cache data and load stuff from there, another 0.5 sec saved )


((DAMN! I should kickstarter.com myself to AOS4 dev team with all of my "superb" and "brilliant" ideas!!! U know, it's like in F1 racing, you have to bring money to the team if you are a slow driver. )


In the meanwhile... someone (bounty?) should send Friedens a 4Ghz POWER workstation, to just to build the 1s booting demo system. Marketing value would be signifficant, IMGO (in my grazy opinnion).
