Someone tried to steal my sisters car last week. They broke the lock on the door but werent able to get into the car. She was worried about them coming back, and she doesnt have insurance, and cant get insurance because of a few minor things wrong with the car. Also shes still paying it off. So she needed money to install a car alarm. Shes paying me back nearly nothing a week, and says she will probably pay back most of the money in January. I've got an overdraft, but I hate being in the red. I've put all my spending on hold for the next month or so while I try to sell excess gear and get back in the black.

if anyone wants to paypal a few dollars, $5 or something, that'd be cool. it'll all add up.

By the way, strange thing that some countries allow cars not to have an insurance. In France, Insurances for cars and houses are compulsory. You cannot drive without a car insurance.

In Australia (and I think NZ is the same), we have two types of insurance -

* "Third Party" which means that I am insured if my car injures someone else or his property. "Third Party" personal insurance is compulsory so that victims can be assured of payment for hospital bills, etc. "Third Party" property damage insurance is optional and the minimum safe level. It means that if I run into a Porsche, the insurance will pay the repair bill for the Porsche (not for my car).
* Comprehensive (assurance tous risques), which covers everything. For older or cheaper cars, it's not always worth while.

What does the "carte verte" cover?

I don't think 3rd party insurance is compulsory in New Zealand yet.. though they're trying to push it through recently. due to the "boy racer" problem.. i.e young men with heavily modded cars that like to drive dangerously. I'm not sure what happened with the law change proposal though.

That's crazy, everyone should have 3rd party insurance. We have heavily modified cars over here too but insurance pays out if you drive like a spanner.

We should all take the Finnish approach, skid pan driving compulsory and 3 years of driving experience (via lessons) to get your licence!

The above is of course meant ironic and as a kind of joke (though that paypal account actually works ) !!! Actually i'm very positively surprised about the helpfulness which seems to be still around in the community. I hope the community will continue to honour the work of every developer creating usefull scripts, tools, applications, os-components, fixing one of those or otherwise contributing. And if you can, show your honour with some bucks spending to the developers... and if you cannot afford it, show your honour with a small "Thank you" mail or forum post .. all of that is badly needed motivation for every developer.

So as a developer I want to say: Thank you! Thank you community for each and every support. Without that we weren't where we are, but probably only a footnote in some book about past computer times.

It true, you do not need insurance to drive a car in NZ. However, they also have a law against "where there a blame, there's a claim" lawsuits. They are effectively illegal. If some one is hurt in an accident the government covers the cost of treatment.

Modded cars are taken by police.......and sold (without all modded things)...so you can say goodbye to your car....
In case of accident with a modded cars...insurance will not pay.....
