I'm skeptical, so far all the VR gadgets and consoles failed. For a good reason, it's one thing to display something right in your eyes, it's something other to create immerse experience. So far I had more fun while playing HL2 and was scared stiff by Bioshock or DOOM3. I used keyboard and mouse as my I/O devices. If game is good I'll forget that I'm pushing "E" button to open doors.
Kinect is a fine technology but it added nothing to gaming experience. You jump around like a monkey playing pretend tennis or wave your arms to pretend you're swimming. You know, I could go swimming instead.
I don't know, I'd prefer to have more amazing games to play than more gear to get less from my experience. _________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. For free. Join today and receive expired $50 cupon from AI! |

Cool... nah... wearing some big clunky headset just to play a game can never be cool... ( a bit like 3D TV as hyped by Sky, never caught on & never will)...
On a more technical note, I may be wrong but wouldn't it be very difficult if not impossible for any current Amiga to use these goggles should they become available...
It seems you need a computer that has the power to run very hi res genuine 3D images at a proper frame rate (which of course the games would have to be written to run on the Amiga in the first place) and I don't believe in any of it's current incarnations there is an Amiga out there that could handle this... course I may be wrong but I'm sure someone could answer that for me... _________________

Perfectly reasonable response, especially as I mentioned it would be. However, I believe they are doing Windows and Linux Api's but I could be wrong. If they do Linux and they release the source then Aros could get this up and running.
I mention this purely as a cool bit of tech, and whilst I hate games, I can see the benefit already. _________________ Amiga 1000, 3000D Toaster, Checkmate A1500 Plus http://www.checkmate1500plus.com/ |

And I remember them, trouble was then that the 3d engines had no realism, now things are totally different.

If I manage to get the cash before the kickstarter expires I'll get one too...
As long as it's better than my old CyberMaxx VR helmet is then I'll be happy, lol (It's a nice thing to keep around as a curiosity :)) _________________ Back to action! |

| Saw this thread after reading Steve's mention of this HMD on the OUYA's thread.
Wow, $1,583,308 pledged on the $250,000 initial goal.

After seeing John Carmak interviews I'm starting to see the potential in this one, especially with support from id, Valve and other major players.
Back in the early '90 I remember being overly enthusiastic on the topic of VR, but as soon as I got the opportunity to try something "similar" (I remember it was some kind of sci-fi battle sim at the London Trocadero) I got so dazed after 5 minutes then my interest dropped all of a sudden.
I still get motion sickness with 3D games, especially with fast-paced ones and/or on large screens so I do not think this Oculus Rift would be an instant buy for me, even if I'd love to be able to step in a virtual world (with maybe something better to do than blast the occasional alien or humanoid foe).
The thing is the vast majority of games nowadays are 1st or 3rd person shooters, not my cup of tea.
Simulations and adventure games would be great, a new Elite or something like Grim Fandango would be awesome.
Then if one of the Amiga platforms will be able to support this one: icing on the cake. Last edited by Shufflepuck on 11-Aug-2012 at 05:27 PM.
