| Hey, all...
I haven't posted here in quite a long time...at least three or four years...mainly because during a financial crisis I had to sell my MicroA1 to cover my rent (thankfully, OS4 systems were in such high demand that I actually got much more than my rent in my eBay auction!), and when my wife and I got back on our feet, I switched to Mac. (Mainly because I needed a laptop but didn't want Windows, and there weren't any OS4 boards available at the time.) And I haven't looked back since....
But anyway....I just landed a job interview for a web developer job. Why?
Because the hiring manager is intrigued by my Amiga experience.
Seriously??!!

| Maybe he remmebers how you had to code properly the first time or you screwed up the machine, or nothing else would work, or you could accidentally format the system partition or even corrupt the hard drive itself.
Maybe he remembers it as a multimedia machine that was so responsive.
Maybe you should show him the Scripted amiga Emulator. That is, if the Amiga Hardware can be simulated in HTML 5 and Javascript, then theres no excuse for a basic web site running a Flash game to be so damnable slow.
Maybe he just wants someone to play Worms with again so he can finally beat them. 8)

Funny.. and ironic. I just talked to a recruiter at EA about a job at DICE (the guys that make Battlefield) so I went to their website and read the About Us page...
Quote:
| Founded in 1992 by four friends from the Amiga demo scene, DICE (then Digital Illusions) created the cult hit Pinball Dreams for the Amiga. |
I had no idea!!! The guys that make Battlefield (BF3 currently being my favorite game) also made Pinball Dreams, one of my all time favorite games! Now if I can just talk my wife into moving to Sweden.
Someone give me some selling points for Sweden! I need the wife to buy into this!

The DICE-guys are cool and still have Amigas in the office. No time to play around with them much though. |

| Amiga tools can be pretty nice for pixel exact web graphics development for mobile devices use....
Once (1995) I had to do information sharing system where repair people on the field had to get device information from web server via 9600bps mobile connection. Tried to do GFX with x86 tools but ended up doing them at home with Dpaint & A4000. (+ on Amiga I had real 24bit palette, not available at work as standard)
+
In 1992 when Amiga was still hanging in the corner of the mainstream I got trainee position in computers sales firm because I knew Amiga from the ground up. I became "Amiga" specialist. We then managed to triple the amount of sold Amigas for a while. Too bad CBM went down, we had some nice ideas to implement ... and if it would not have been financially so hard times in Finland in early 90's, perhaps we would have managed to participate in Amiga buyout with some ex CBM UK persons.... (but as the banckcupt proceedings were so difficult, everything most likely would have been futile anyway, they let Amiga drop totally from mainstream while playing around) Last edited by KimmoK on 20-Feb-2013 at 11:55 AM. | Years ago i worked for a company that recycled pc hardware from large companies, i.e. desktops and laptops but a lot of the laptops had passwords on them(IBM). i introduced them to amigas,as i took my A1200 in, coupled the drives to it and wiped them clean, it did not see the password info. As ot this i got my own little workshop and all the laptops for repair and reconfigure, good times
The amigas were/are clever and lovely systems |

| Quick update:
Second interview tomorrow.
If I do land this job, I'll definitely be shopping for an OS4.x machine. :) This job would be more money than I've ever seen, which....actually, is tragically not a very difficult thing for ANYBODY to accomplish... _________________ former µA1-C owner Listen to my podcast, Autobiography of a Schnook (there are worse things you can do!) - schnookpodcast.com |

That's why I always keep Amiga some where on my resume. You never know who you'll run in to :)
I had an occasion to meet one of the Amiga Unix developers recently. Good times.

| The manager escorted me out of the office after the interview. On the way out I asked him why he was "intrigued" by the Amiga thing on my resume. He said it was quite simply because he's a "child of the '80s."
oh...and I got the job. :) 3-month contract, likely to be renewed. :) _________________ former µA1-C owner Listen to my podcast, Autobiography of a Schnook (there are worse things you can do!) - schnookpodcast.com |
