| I'm looking for a free music program that I can use on my Amiga in which I can quickly drag and drop notes onto a staff and listen to the playback.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

You mean in sheet music format? I only know of one package that uses that, and its ancient. It was called "Deluxe Music Construction Kit" or something similar. It used an intuition screen, so it may well work on new Amigas (i have no idea), but it'll be hard to get hold of... _________________ Playstation Network ID: xeron6 |

I remember it was available somewhere on the net as a free download. But as you say, it is an ancient program.
Perhaps PEB wants a MIDI program? www.hd-rec.de could be a solution.

There was one called Dr. T's KDS or something like that. As I remember it did seem quite good. I remember playing around with it and it that was one of the things you could do was to feed musical notation into it. It was a very complex program with loads of options.
Ooops! Sorry, I forgot that it was supposed to be freeware! |

Yes, Deluxe Music will do that, and 2.0 was workbench friendly and still works on my 3.0 A1200 at least, and I would think would work on 3.9. However, Bars & Pipes Professional is truly freeware now, and if you play with the configurations, you can get it to program/play in a sheet music style, as opposed to the default view. _________________ Lord Steven http://www.zcrew.org ----===============---- To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield |

Thanks for the suggestion. Hd-rec might do the trick. It seems to be much more than what I was looking for. I'm downloading it right now and will hopefully be able to try it out soon.

It was Dr.T's KCS, actually. Stands for "Keyboard-Controlled Sequencer" if I'm not mistaken.

| I seem to remember an old program called "Sequencer One," but I guess that's out of the question.
Perhaps music could be made with Audio Evolution or Samplitude Opus?
For music I use OctaMED 6, but that makes MED modules. I guess a module maker isn't much good either. _________________ SEX SUX

Just dug out my copy - doesn't seem to have a score mode, and has a big warning "This is NOT PD"
@PEB
I'd have though that Sonix would be the sort of simple thing you're looking for - very intuitive to use (if a bid dated now ) AFAIK its not been released as abandonware though. MED/Octamed have and those do have a score interface as well as a traditional tracker, but they'd be a bit harder to pick up IMO._________________

There used to be a commercial program by Dr. T's called The Copyist.. it was really good at laying out professional looking scores, but didn't play them back as I remember. You might find it on an abandonware site somewhere.
Other than that DMCS as a few others have mentioned did the same thing, and you're probably more likely to find it online than The Copyist.
Good luck! |

Thanks for the link for BarsnPipes; I've downloaded it and played with it quite a bit. It seems to be capable of doing a lot.
But I still can't figure out how to place notes on a staff with it. MIDI imput is useless to me. I need to be able to imput notes to create a very basic musical piece, which I can then then play back through my Amiga.
I think BarsnPipes is able to do this, I just haven't been able to figure it out yet. |

| @PEB Hi Peb, I've got DeluxeMusic 2.0 on board and yes it is about the only notation application I'm aware of that let's you cleanly write sheet music with 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes, rests, time signature, etc. even lyrics. Right now however you will not be able to input notes other than with your mouse as currently the camd.library for this and other midi applications that allows you to do this via external midi keyboard is not ready for the OS4 environment but should be updated soon from what I hear. I'm hoping that someone or group in the community could put together a new notation application written in PPC native code and other midi applications for that matter, perhaps porting code over. You might also try MusicTex on Aminet but don't know how far you can get with that, haven't tried it. Sorry if I couldn't point you to a freeware application that exists but optimistic that one would appear relatively soon, however basic it may be to start.

Well, on my copy if I double click on the midi track, I get staffs and the ability to punch in notes and drag them around. I think if it doesn't show that way, if you go into the "show" pull down menu after opening a track, you'll see "staff-hybrid" as an option. That is checked on mine._________________ Lord Steven http://www.zcrew.org ----===============---- To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield |

Too bad DEB didn't mention Mac or Windows. Then I could point out Finale Notepad 2004, which is a free download and does everything he wants.
I don't know if there is such a beast on the Miggy, but I do know that our remaining coders could correct such a lack (hint, hint). _________________ Life without the LORD is like a soap bubble without the soap. Without Him, you are nothing. |

OK, I am able to get the "staff-hybrid" to come up, but I'm still having trouble actually placing notes on the staff. I'll play with it a bit more.
I downloaded the demo version of Deluxe Music (from Aminet), and this is exactly what I've been looking for. There are only two problems. In the first place, since it is only a demo version, I cannot save my projects. Secondly, I can't hear anything when I try to play back the music. I know the program is too old to be using AHI; but would AHI be preventing it from playing?
Anyway, I'm going to try changing the preferences in BarsnPipes, and see if I can learn the program better.
Thanks,
