I think someone should set up a wiki for Amiga stuff.

Anyone in a great position to do that?

I was trying to do that a few months back, but I could never get the php to work - I've still got directories full of half-installed wikkis knocking around locally and on my server

But it would be great if it was possible

Look at other wikis,
then harass their owners until they tell you how to they made it work.

I know how it should be done, but unfortunately most Wikis need an SQL database, and I've only got one availible (which is being used for my forums ATM). If enough people would use the service though, I'd happily rip out the forums and put in a Wiki instead - it's something I wanted to do before I even knew what a "Wiki" was

The problem with an Amiga wiki, is that the AmigaOS page would keep getting overwritten by "STUPID LAME OS FOR BLIND FANATICAL FOLLOWRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", and the morphos one would no doubt get similar treatment....

Wikipedia has a lot of Amiga info, though. (a fair amount was contributed by myself )

If the users follow a protocol, a wiki can be a makeshift forum.

It seems like an Amiga wiki would be a ridiculously valuable resource for the remaining 1191 Amigans out there, and might bring some color back into the community.

It's basically a set of pages that link to each other. Anyone can submit pages, and anyone can edit pages. Look here for more info (that page is also part of a wiki)

Fourtunately most wikis have rollbackable histories. Even those that a random visitor can undo any blatant spewage.

Please reply if you would use a wiki, or have time to edit and add stuff and watch for vandalism. If enough people are interested, I'll set one up and we can take it from there.

I would use it.

Why not use REBOL to make it? We could make it produce HTML, so it can be used from a browser, or we could make it all REBOL, so people have to have REBOL installed to use it. Plusses would be, that REBOL get spread more, and it would be easier to put functionality into it. Maybe even do both, if you understand, what I mean.

I've made a database in REBOL, that could hold the information.

What do you think?

Interestingly, Targhan on A.org was saying just the same thing - there is a REBOL wiki engine called "Vanilla", but it's not well documented. If loads of people were going to use it I'd consider it (Terminills who hosts openamiga.org could host such a system) but I'm not convinced that it would be worth doing that for something that not many people would be willing to use. What I may do is set up something like phpWiki on my server - it's simpler, and much more documented.

Although there doesn't seem to be that much interest, I'm currently setting up a wiki as it should be a bit more successful than the forums I had on my site I'll tell you when it's complete.

I've just set up the wiki. Before I make it public, I've decided to give the URL to about 16 people, who (if they want to) can test it and add content. You know who you are Watch this space...
