If amiga fits in Franko's everyday than WHY not and still has more applications/games than mos/os4/aros ng has.

I am sure franko can live without youtube..(plus he is a coder and he can write somesort of youtube downloader like os4/mos/aros.

i use aros everyday not windows/linux/mac and i do get most out of aros and we dont have every app like windows/linux/mac has but i and others do try to fill in that gap by coding..

I dont think its right to question franko because mos/aros/os4 its not any better than good old miggys yet and most of you all have windows/linux/mac just for pro usage..

To Franko's question
--------------------------
I dont use amiga at all but i use amiga like os AROS everyday...

@Franko

Feel free to ignore the following...

(RANT MODE ON)

I may not be using a 'classic' amiga for my computing needs anymore but I consider myself more of an amiga only user than you are. You do not use your REAL amiga for ALL your computer needs ("but the actual videos are of course uploaded using the iMac..."). You can't leave a large part of most users computer needs (internet) out of your question just because you don't use an amiga for it.

I use AMIGAOS for all my computer needs, I too have a couple of macs (obsolete G4 & G5) but I don't use them, last time they were turned on was over six months ago to see if they survived when I moved house.

You want to know how many people use real amigas only? One that I know of, ToAkes, everyone else is like you, they have a mac, pc, smart phone etc.

You're question would make more sense if it was who uses any form of AmigaOS solely for their private (not work) computer needs. At least you'd find out what AmigaOS is capable of now, not 15 years ago...

(RANT MODE OFF)

Edit: BTW I'm one of the idiots running IBrowse on my X1000, works well and is loads faster than the opposition.

@VooDoo

No you don't, MorphOS, AmigaOS newer then 3.9 does not count, or AROS.

@Franko

I would have qualified up till around 2004, at that point my A1200 with appollo 68040 accellerator did everything I needed, including CD burning, CD artwork design, website maintenace, and internet access via dialup modem.

I then bought a AmigaOne XE, this rapidly took over and up till about 2008 I could say I used AmigaOS for all (or very nearly all as I booted into linux on the XE occasionaly, say 95%). Then I got a seperate x86 machine given to me and I used linux in pararlell, I now have a linux laptop as well as my SAM Flex. The A1200 is still set up, but rarely get switched on, CD interface is dead, so file transfer between it and other machines is tedious (dnet over serial)

AmigaOS does about 90% of my needs with the linux laptop doing farcebook access, youtube and BBC iPlayer, dropbox, and occasionally converting word documents to a sane format if someone sends me one.

The quality of CD artwork design etc. I can achieve with AmigaOS4 software (including 68k stuff running under petunia) out does what I could do on my A1200 by an order of magnitude, simply because of available ram and CPU speed.

I would say very few.

The last time i used my A1260/G2 for everything was
in 2004 just before i switched to my A1SE/G3 with OS4.

On the A1SE/G3 i used also linux but not anymore now,
then bout an ibook G4 in 2005 and i still use them both.
I can use almost all progs on both the systems, just
depends in what mood i am.

I have an attic full of classics which are set up partially and
when i have an nostalgia mood i go there back to the 80/90's.

Genuine commodore amiga hardware,came with third party hardware as standard ie hardrive or floppy drive. If we go a little bit further some of the components on the motherboard is not made by commodore.

So to say plugging in a third party accelerator does not count is not fair,as it is still a classic computer with a expansion card(s).

If we are talking a genuine commodore computer off the assembly line and use that as standard with no third party expansion card,this is also unfair as lots of things have changed from the 90s.

All those software from the A500 days,you may just get by,but I don't see the point in moving back to those days.

A4000 is probably the only computer that can do it as it has simms slots on board,if we discount third party addons.

I use only classic Amigas for my music sequencing and samples. I use either MiniDisc or a PC to record the audio though. I tried for many years to not use other computers but where do you draw the line? I have a set top box for video on demand. Is this classed as a computing need? I have digital radios with DSP and processors in them. My washing machine probably has a processor in it more powerful than a few of my Amigas. I think it is good if you can get yourself a computer that is dedicated and isolated away from being able to check Facebook or the news whilst you are trying to type a novel, draw some art or write some music. I would not be able to live without a PC nowadays but it is good to get away from them for a bit each day.

@Franko

This what I use my computer for.

Internet banking.
YouTube
FaceBook
Internet forums
Finding information (Google/Wikipedia)
Skype
Spotify
Playing games (mostly MMORPG).
Programming
Graphics.

This what I used to use my computer for in 1980/1990's, I did not have internet at the time.

Programming
Graphics
Games

Some of my friends uses there computers for BBS to talk whit friends and download stuff, it was possible to do most if not every thing you wonted takes to emulation having access to MacOS7.x.x or MacOS8.x.x and PcTask, made Amiga useable for almost everything for where long time.

Today it is impossible to do, everything you need on Amiga, unless your computer needs has not changed, but I think most people that say they only use Commodore Amiga for all computer needs is lying to them self.

@Severin

I think Frankos question is an intresting and valid one. Personally I used A1200 with blizzard 30/50 16 megs (still working fine) for everything computerrelated up until late 90s.
Spreadsheet (turbocalc), wordprocessing, mail using Thor (downloading bbs messages), programming etc while music playing in the background.

While ive become spoilt now, i could STILL do everything i really require with that setup.
Surfing the internet is for the most part a "timethief" anyhow

So the answer would be no, sadly.

Agreed.

As is playing games or tweaking the gui etc. The Amiga is a massive "timethief", it's taken 28 years of mine...

My main point is that Franko isnm't the purist he makes out to be, none of us are or we'd all be using 256k A1000's (a REAL Amiga has an Agnus chip ).

Well, if you choose to define the expression "all your computing needs" as not actually including anything you simply do on a different computer (whether it's a phone, tablet. games console, laptop, desktop, workstation or server) because your Amiga somehow isn't geared up for it in some way, then count me in ;)

If Franko can claim he uses his Amiga for "all of his computing needs" while excluding everything he does online via his Mac, then it's fair for anybody else to exclude whatever they want too, right?

@thread

I will echo the request made in the second post of this thread by Yo - please try to keep on topic here.

This very simple question has generated an awfully large level of criticism, ridicule and other unnecessary posting. Yes posts in threads do often go off on a tangent, but there were several requests made both in the initial post and that from Yo to try and keep to the question asked.

Simply put, please do not complain if your post after this point finds itself foul of an "ignored moderator" or "off topic" report.

My fondest memory of Amiga usage was in 96-97when I was doing 30+ pages of a document I needed for completing school and when adding footnotes to each page or altering them I had to wait 2-3 minutes each time for Wordworth to regenerate the view of the whole document. Guess if I got bored. I used my A1200 for maybe six months after but then I got myself a PC.

@Franko

I bought my fist Amiga in 1987, an A500 followed by an A2000. Amigas were my everyday computer until the late 90s. I still own 4 Amigas, 3 classics and 1 Amiga NG.

I tend to select the right tool for the job and I also apply this philosophy to my computers. As such, out of necessity I have chosen to use a MacBook Pro for my laptop, for an everyday workstation I own several Windows machines. I also dabble in Linux, owning several Raspberry PIs. I like & use all of them.

The Amigas are there strictly as hobby machines and I would have difficulty parting with them. Only one of them meets your requirements (ie Commodore HW only). I purchased a stock A4000D a couple of years ago just to play games - I recently purchased an Indivision MK2 so that I can use a VGA monitor so maybe it is now disqualified. The others have been upgraded with cpu boards & other expansions and one is a PPC.

I use my maxed out 3000 that I bought new in 91 (will use again once my cpu comes in.). I use this computer for financial reporting, word processing, datebook, listen to music, and the rare game.

My Powerbook with MOS is used for email and interned browsing.

PC's with Windows 7 used for other items that suits it...
