| hi all! i have come across 2 vanilla a600's , haven't picked them up yet but pretty sure they are the a600 and not a600HD, anyways, what do i have to do to get a hdd/cf setup working? if they are ks 2.0 is it a matter of upgrading to 2.05? or can i just leave them? also what expansions are available and what can i use in the pc card slot? really keen to have a play with these old machines! I'm not giving links as I assume you know my friend Google
Well, all A600 shipped with 2.05. However, there are three releases, only two of which support booting from internal HD. If you have the 37.299 release, I would think an upgrade to 3.1 is the best option. Can't really see any advantage of hanging on to 2.05. You should see the release number written on the "insert floppy" screen on booting without a floppy/harddrive. I think. It's been a while
Expansions: Well, you can actually get a 68020 or 030 CPU upgrade with more (and faster) memory, even though Commodore never gave the machine an upgrade slot. Possibly there exists some way of upgrading the amount of chip ram as well?
PCMCIA wise, maybe an ethernet adapter? Unless a squirrelscsi or a "sidecar" CDROM is an option. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). The chip RAM can be upgraded via the trapdoor slot - I'm pretty sure Individual Computers did a RAM expansion for that fairly recently..._________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

On my A1200 I use PCMCIA-CF adapter (with 512 MB CF card) in the PCMCIA slot. It is probably much better option than floppy for data transfer ( ). |

I like your definition of probably. You're rather conservative, aren't you? _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). | I have A600HD somewhere and one day I might build a AOS2.1 demosystem of it.
But are there any big differences between 2.1 and 3.1 with A600 HW? (most likely all 2.1 stuff work with 3.1, but other than that? I imagine 3.1 is a little slower.) Last edited by KimmoK on 30-Jul-2012 at 10:10 AM.

I don't think there's a lot of speed difference in the kickstart. The AGA stuff you don't really need are on disk.
But if he has to upgrade, there's hardly ANY reason not to go all the way up. Especially if he wants to do other upgrades as well. Being stuck with Workbench 2.04 wouldn't be very nice in the long run _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C).
