Hi: I am upgrading a Used 1200! I want to hook up a Dvd to my A1200 what is the best way?

I also need to eventually get some fast memory & understand how to do that!

Thanx so much

@Mikey

DVD - A1200 has IDE interface (compatible with PATA drives), don´t expect great speed.

Memory - there is "trap door expansion slot" in your A1200. You can put memory cards (up to 8 MB) or better (and for same price) CPU cards with own RAM (up to 256 MB). Old cards (eg. eBay) and even new cards (eg. ACA123x) are available.

68030 CPU with at least 8 MB RAM is enough for most task you would expect from an A1200 (some productivity software and of course WHDLoad).

I have prolem with DVDs, it seems that Windows doesn't anymore use ISO9660 it uses instead UDF

I have found this, but it didn't help.

How should I configure it?

@utri007

I use the same package on my WinUAE setup. I can send you my CD0 and other files, if that helps.

@Mikey

I use the FAST ATA MKIII (MK IV version is available from Amigakit) which has two LiteON DVD burners attached to it...

I also use the 4xEDIE buffered interface on my other Amigas and an extenally cased LiteONDVD burner that I can easily swap between them...

If you can afford it got for the FASTATA board, much faster and better especially if your looking to burn DVDs...

Main problem these days is finding a DVD burner you can use on your Amiga as a lot of the newer ones (ie: those manufactured in the past 4 years) simply don't work properly (technical incompatabilty reasons)...

If your just going to use the DVD drive for reading/ copying files from already written/ burned DVDs, then the cheaper 4xEIDE boards will do just fine...

I'd recommend an 030 accelerator board too as a minimum with lots of ram and the FASTATA board if you're looking to burn DVD's

Software wise there isn't a big choice in DVD burning software on the Amiga but you can check out my own collection of little CLI/Shell DVD burning/ copying utils that are free on Aminet...

Some Handy DVD Burning Uitls For The Amiga...

I've added Slim-DVD to my desktop A1200, it uses A1200 own IDE controller, it works OK, it is just not very fast, but no doubt that it is useable.

Usually files on DVD are small, so speed is not issue. Issue is that Vista/7 uses UDF fileformat :(

@utri007

You'll find most (but not all ) IDE/ ATAPI DVD drives will indeed work for reading discs it's when it come to burning discs on the Amiga you'll most likely run into problems...

Roughly about 4 years ago (maybe longer) most DVD burners implemented SCSI III commands into their firmware and almost all the available Amiga DVD burning utils (including mine) only use SCSI II commands...

Most modern DVD burners simply wont work properly when used with the Amiga and trying to burn discs, they either refuse to work at all because the required SCSI III commands aren't in the burning utility code or they look like they're workings but produce "coasters"...

I tested a whole range of DVD drives a few years back and only found a small number that would work properly burning discs on the Amiga. The old LiteOn ones I found to be the best and fully compatible while Panasonic ones were the least compatible. I bought some Panasonic ones from Amigkit but they simply wouldn't work but they were kind enough to exhange them for LiteOn ones which did (pretty sure I got the last of their LiteOn drives though)...

PS: In case anyones wondering why I mention SCSI while talking about IDE/ ATAPI drives, the answer is simple... you actually use SCSI commands to make the things work...

@utri007

Sorry forgot to mention...

I have no problems reading UDF discs on the Amiga. I use AllegroCDFS from Elbox, it handles UDF discs perfectly...

@Mikey

A lot of people have fitted a slimline laptop drive inside the A1200 case.

Do a search and I'm sure you'll find plenty more like that.

@Rob

Those links you gave are for CD drives not DVD drives...

The guy is looking for A DVD drive to hook up (Most CD drives work for both reading and writing but DVD is a different story altogether unfortunately)...

@Franko

The links are more to do with the physical side of fitting a drive in a desktop case. Physically there is little difference between a CD and DVD drive.

I'm not sure about writing but years ago a friend of mine hooked up a standard DVD drive in his A1200T via a 4 way IDE splitter + IDE-fix and was able to read the first 2GB of his MP3 disks that he'd written on his PC.
