A3000 SCSI freezes

Yesterday I installed a new 80-pin Seagate hard disk via 5080 pin adapter. There is a strange situation:

1) A3000---old Quantum (50)---new Seagate (80)
or
A3000---new Seagate (80)---old Quantum(50) - works perfectly

2) A3000 with only new Seagate (80 pin) - freezes

What I can do to fix it?

@coriolis

My (un)educated guess is that the 50pin Quantum forces the Seagate into a HVD mode, which is also supported by the A3000 SCSI host adapter. The Seagate alone is switched into a LVD mode which isn't supported by the A3000 host adapter.

Possibly, but it could also be:

1) lack of termination power which is more common on newer drives
2) improper termination of all lines
3) bugs in the SCSI proto chip

I purchased and tried to use an active and passive terminators. At now A3000 started and I even can enter to boot menu which showes new Seagate partitions.

But when I tried to boot from new hard disk, I catched the guru error - 8000 0008.

When I tried to boot from old hdd - it is perfectly booting.

Does anybody know how I can fix that?

@coriolis

Have you limited the max transfer to that recommend for the controller?

I have seen crashes on both IDE and SCSI setups that were caused by bad max transfer values. Just something else to rule out.

A bit like doing an isolation test on the phone line when you get problems. A test that everyone tells you to do. Yes did one yesterday.

Is the boot partition less than 2 gigs? Think there is an issue if your boot partition is large.
