Hi.

I have a A500 PSU and when I switch it on without plugging it to the Amiga it has a ticking noise.

What can be the problem?

Is the safe to plug it to my Amiga 1200 just to test if the A1200 is working?

Thanks

Volt.

@VoltureX

Most "switching" power supplies (which is just about all of them anymore) require a certain minimum load to regulate properly.
What you hear is probably the power supply trying to protect itself.

While it _might_ do no damage to the supply, I would suggest not running the supply for long without a load.

Even larger "PC" power supplies usually require a load resistor to the 3v3 rail for the supply to work properly when out of the computer.

I've got A500 PSUs that do that - it's nothing to worry about (and is actually probably a good sign).

@Spirantho

Actually, when my A500 PSU made a ticking noise it was due to a blown fuse on the 5 volt line.

@Spirantho

Thanks for the replies. The PSU was working and didn't fry my Amiga :)

You don't even need any resistor now, there is a green wire on the connector, you just need to jumper it to the black (GND) wire next to to get the PSU running. You can then measure all the voltages without any load. Good test to verify the PSU works.
