@linuxlalala

the sources I got most apps from was ebay, then some (including Amigawriter) from Vesalia. I know that Amigakit also sells some some software. Partly former commercial applications are freeware or opensouce, some of them I have included with permission in my distribution AROS Vision:

http://www.aros-platform.de/html/distribution_download.html

examples are TV-Paint, Xi-Paint, PPaint, SoundFX, Real3D...

all Maxon, HiSoft, Haage and Prodad-Products, Softwood and so on are neither freeware nor opensource so you only get them used (ebay)

What do you need?

All word processors are not free

And thanks to the abandonment of old software houses, it is impossible to contact the authors to buy the software/game in question :(.

@linuxlalala

the "commercial" amiga-market is dead for more than ten years, we cannot change anything about it :(. We can only try to make the best of it and (partly) try to rebuild it.

There is a interesting discussion regarding a NG 68k amiga on my site:
http://www.amigacoding.de

perhaps you (or others) are interested to take part

even if you get in contact the legal situation is very complicated. For example I contacted Maxon regarding integrating Cinema4d in my distribution but they could not permit it because of the complicated legal situation (it was created by a number of freelancers at that time). Sometimes products use licensed parts and so on.

@OlafS25

if you "try" to "partly" rebuild something, chances are you haven't put a lot of effort into it

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

the problem is simple we need more users then we get more software. And I have some hopes regarding UAE. Example is UAE4ALL2 on Android that is emulating A1200/AGA on mobile platforms. And then of course WinUAE and FS-UAE (Mac and Linux). So the situation was worse in the last years. The chance to get some new games in future is there, applications are a different beast of course. But we all do what we can

And there is still some hope getting new hardware so do not give up all hope

For me, the problem is preservation is focused ONLY on games and not applications. Imagine people in 100 years seeing an AMIGA, with some preserved games, wondering: "What did they do with computers back then except playing games? Waste of productivity...".

Of course we have to develop new software, but preservation is important, too.

For example Opus Magellan is opensource and a community project now. Some are at least a kind of freeware. Many are not supported anymore and you cannot get them legally (except used on ebay f.e.). Perhaps some would support their software again when they would see a market again. I personal think in much shorter timeframes and next step would be to get some commercial support regarding games and hopefully new hardware. The FPGA Arcade is already available (a kind of A1200+) and I hope there will be more hardware in future. Nobody here can do wonders. For commercial applications (and development environments) you would need much more users so we have to live what we have right now. You can find commercial applications (as adf) in the web but they are not legal to download if you do not own them. New development of commercial applications is not realistic in the foreseeable future (except perhaps from enthusiasts)

I have tried to get permissions and find authors but many authors have vanished or are not willing or not able because of legal reasons to opensource their products. And for commercial development the market is too small at the moment.

I have found http://www.tigerteam.co.uk/protext/ . It seems the company behind protext made it available as freeware. I will test it and see... (I still prefer wordsworth, finalcopy, finalwriter and MiniOffice (personal favorites) )

@linuxlalala

If you're on emulation then this could be your best bet:
AmigaWriter from Vesalia
It comes on CD and it's cheap (12€). WordWorth came on CD too but it's harder to find outside of Ebay.
My choice was and still is FinalWriter even on OS4.1, sadly it didn't come on CD so i had to install from ADF.

Isn't buying used software like piracy? (http://www.pcworld.com/article/194989/buyer_beware_when_purchasing_used_software.html)

MS software (expecially the OS) is partly directly connected with a certain hardware (and that might be the case for some other companies). When you buy old amiga-software that includes original documentation and discs and partly even original license informations it was a legal acquired software and so I cannot imagine that you violate a law.

Thanks, but if you are not a lawyer, you cannot give precise legal advice .

Anyway, because I mostly use emulation (not planning to get the real hardware soon), if I buy diskettes, how can I make adfs out of them?

No only from my knowledge regarding software licenses that is part what I do for money . If you want to know it 100% you must look in the licenses of the software (what is propably only possible after buying it) or ask a attorney but I doubt that he has knowledge of licenses of amiga-software sold more than 10 years ago.

Without a real amiga you cannot create ADFs (as far as I know). I myself used a A600 to create the ADFs from my original discs
