to 3 first
most developers left ALL platforms, commercial development stopped more than 10 years ago because of the lack of users and I do not see how the strategy of both AmigaOS or MorphOS could change this in future. The only platform that (in my view) could move some things is AROS but is ignored by most "NG" users (whyever).
Second users like you do not see (or better want not to see) the amount of development in the 68k community and how many more users are there.
Lack of modern software is common to all platforms. For example VAMP runs on AROS 68k, mplayer and ffplay work on it (enough processing power needed). There are plenty of emulators, Netsurf works on it too. There are far more office applications than on the other platforms. When here someone asked what software is used 90% were 68k. |

You mean that horrible OS3 version or there is proper AROS 68k version?

As I wrote, I´m mainly WinUAE/OS3 user (except some experiments with AROS). In comparison to NG, 68k is dead. |

I wrote in comparison to. In comparison to 68k is NG alive, in comparison to mainstream world it is of course dead. |

even in comparison I see no real advantage. When I look on the classic sites there is much more activity there. Look on eab.abime.net and compare it to amigans or morphzone. I have obviously a different definition of "dead" then... |

Fair enough, I didn't know that, just rememberd some news releases about it from a few years ago. 3.5+ had sort of truetype support but through hacks (erm.. third party addons) but it never looked very good compared to bitmap fonts on the classics due to antialiasing oddities. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

| 3.1 is a lotfaster out of the box than 3.5 and 3.9 because it hasn't got all the customisation and additional software. I prefer to customise my own 3.1 rather than install 3.5/3.9.
4.x didn't feel like an Amiga to me, but may have felt more so if I had had it running on an A1200 because I like to handle the original hardware - being retro to the max and all. _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

| For me...
The most perfect Amiga setup that I have had was A2000 & Wb1.3 in 1991. Later I have not had time to set up my system to perfection.
My second best 68k system was tuned up 3.1 on A4k. Later I found out that 3.9 was a lot stabler but needed still tuning to do the same as my old 3.1 system.
Biggest handicap was disk speed of my a4k. (2.3MB/s theorethical).
My SAM440ep-mini & AOS4.1 fixes the disk speed gap. It's the fastest filehandler in our household. (including my 2 month old x86 system) And it has less limitations than my a4k. Less tricks to do to make it work (still tricks needed). SAM440 has a lot more CPU performance than classic, enabling a lot more modern things.
And AOS4 feels Amiga ... even if it lacks executive that I loved on AOS3.x.
(my MOS systems are not in full use yet, neither my AROS box.)
(AOS4 is very usable in everyday use and while my system is not perfectly stable, I've found out that I can not easily find stable/reliable linux either for my x86 boxes... tried about 10 distros, also this mint 14 kde is unreliable piece of *) Last edited by KimmoK on 27-May-2013 at 08:16 AM.

I personal am mostly involved in game area. Part of this will be AROS Vision as a free and standardized platform usable on emulation and hardware. I hope I can soon make another announcements in this area (gamea). In pure application area there are is not much activity right now (except f.e. Netsurf AGA and other projects), but I do not see very many new applications on NG either. Most existing applications are 68k anyway. There are more chances to regain some momentum in the game market so this is what I am concentrating on. Last edited by OlafS25 on 27-May-2013 at 09:28 AM.

On aos4 you need to set priority for every app manually, separately, in icon info, to make system run smoothly under hevy load conditions. In executive one can set rules for applications and set priorities for individual applications in one single place. As an result I could have 600% CPU load and the system kept on flying just like with 0% CPU load. I have not experienced that on any other system, only with AOS+executive. The effect was pretty equall on 7Mhz ... 50Mhz systems. And I have heard that also under emulation (UAE or Amithlon) executive gives/gave similar smoothness.
A little bit similarly it was fun to set per application which applications were allowed to use virtual memory and which not (with gmem app, IIRC, a little similar with vmem), I could then be 100% sure that anims and music play smoothly under heavy load and under heavy memory usage.... Nothing is dead until its used and software developed. 68k is dead as hardware (=not manifactured anymore) but FPGA gives it a new life and chance.
Shame, Natami didn`t live up to reach end users.
Comparing AmiKit setup to AmigaOS 4, I still feel OS4 is more advanced out of box - or its maybe an illusion because of using it real, not emulated. AmiKIt is "honey pot" in terms that it comes with many apps and tweaks, that no older 68k sys can compare to it,and automatic update system.
Improvement of AmiKit and AROS Vision are important as software side of new 68k FPGA machines, if there will be any. Plus for emulation boxes like UAE on anything.
So its kinda "Seperated league"

the whole "dead" nonsense was not by me. You are right, 68k is pure fun and I see chances in gaming area but not as serious "competition" to Windows or Linux. None platform is dead as long as there are users and developers on it. I hope to help to revive the platform for commercial game development. Perhaps just a dream but who knows |
