Another nice game you can play on AROS

After some initial steps I tried in my next experiment with AROS and DosBox something more resource demanding (guess what ):

Yes it is Stronghold Crusader!
Stronghold runs surprisingly well on my configuration (Core 2 Q6600 2400 MHz), but still not fast enough to be pleasant to play. However, I think any more recent AROS configuration (faster Core 2, i5 etc.) will handle it without problem.

DosBox has some severe limitations - regular version can´t use filedisks larger than 500 MB (I don´t know, if it such problem exists also in the AROS port), so I removed sound effects.

How to install Windows 95 in DosBox?

1) You need Windows 95, drivers and of course some games
2) How to install Windows 95?
There is nice guide on vogons.zetafleet.com describing Windows 95 installation:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=24936

Remember that Win95 must be installed on filedisk, current unmodified version of DosBox (0.74) doesn´t support filedisks greater than 500 MB (I use 400 MB to be on the safe side).

Note: I installed Windows 95 in Windows version of DosBox and then copied filedisks to my AROS configuration, however it should install also in AROS DosBox. Myself I use Windows 95 in QEMU for copying files in to the filedisks...

3) Drivers
I installed:
DirectX 8.0a (needs DCOM)
sound drivers
latest S3 drivers

These drivers are freely available on the net. I can send them by e-mail of course.

You can also install some dearchiving utility (eg. WinRAR).

Master of Orion II for Windows 95 works in DosBox (on Windows 7), I think it should run without problems also on AROS (not tested).

I don´t think these games work in OS4...

1) Even X1000 can´t reach more than 486DX/2 performance in DosBox (no dynamic core emulation in non-x86 DosBox versions)
2) Normal and simple cores aren´t enough compatible for most Win95 applications (maybe OS4 versions supports full core?)

On new computer of my brother (Core i5) I have CPU performance in DosBox comparable to Pentium II 300 MHz (dynamic core used).

ScummVM is splendid piece of work, but I play rather strategy games like Populous II, SimCity 2000 or Civilization.

But you don't have to use filedisks? On my XP DosBox mounts my games dir as D driver.

That game looks nice btw. Is it at Abandonia?

If you want to play Windows games in DosBox, you must (still) use filedisks.

If you mean Stronghold Crusader, then no... it is Windows game and really worth the money.

AROS? Do you mean it does not work on DOSBox 0.73 for AmigaOS 4.1 or MorhpOS? I will test it on AmigaOS at least. Thanks.

@Niolator

Nope, PPC hardware is too slow. OTOH there is no necessarily point in running it on AROS either because you can run both Windows and AROS simultaneously.

PPC hardware would be fast enough (with someting like dynamic core...).

There are some crazy people that rather use their favourite OS than Windows.
And of course, my beloved Dungeon Keeper doesn´t work on Windows 7, so I play it in QEMU (or DosBox) in Windows 95.

Yeah, but it doesn't exist.

Sure, but it is just some emulated application. But indeed I also love playing some classics in DosBox. I just thought on AROS you can switch to native Windows application at anytime so it wouldnt be big deal.

Oh, indeed, it won't. Microsoft is famous for scrapping their software base by making them incompatible.
