| Good day to all owners of both ImageFX and OS4.x,
I have uploaded to OS4Depot a solution to the problem all of us have faced since OS4 final... the dreaded buggy installation of ImageFX4.5 to OS4.x.
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=graphics/misc/ifx45install.lha
I have been eliminating bugs for the past week. It is now a "working" installation script, capable of intalling a base ImageFX4.5 installation as well as installing various extras. Thanks go to Cecilia, Sven Ottemann, Andy Broad, and Steven Solie without whom this script would install NOTHING! Special thanks goes to Damien "Hypex" Stewart for testing and offering great advice.
[Shameless plug mode=on] If you own ImageFX4.5 and have not been able to get it working, please try this script. It is the only thing that got it working on my own system!
EDIT: New Release! Version 0.8: Fixed misdirection of LIBS: installation. Fixed double installation of JPEG saver. Fixed endless loop when selecting Extras. Added icon for ImageFX4 drawer.

A big thankyou, to you and all the others who contributed to the making of this. I have'nt tried it yet, (working too hard at the moment) perhaps this weekend. Thanks again, Richard. |

You are very welcome. The installation script is the result of being frustrated, while waiting for someone else to do it. I had some rusty 10-year-old AmigaDOS scripting knowledge; so, I decided to give the old skills a workout. Wow, was it a workout! Again, I must say that without the help of Hypex, the script still would not be working. Hypex taught me a few new tricks I had never known. I relearned forgotten things from reading from Sheldon Leeman's AmigaDOS 4th ed manual (I guess I should also thank Sheldon Leeman). It has been a week of learning and relearning the very neat and powerful things AmigaDOS can do.

| @PhantomInterrogative Thanks thats just what I need to get my copy of ImageFX45 installed under OS4.1.
I purchased it while I was waiting on my sam440 and OS4.1 being delivered but i have never managed to get it working without crashes under OS4.1 even my attempt to copy it over from an install I did under winUAE did not work very well.
So I will look forward getting to give your installer a go when I get some free time to play with my sam440.

Just to give a warning...
Make sure to backup your current installation to a safe location before executing the install script. Remove anything you might have installed from the IFX CDROM to your SYS: partition and your User-startup. This script works, but it requires a clean install.

Thanks for making this script, I'm not going to test it as I have a working installation, and am not touching it ! But it'll useful for those that haven't got things going!

| @PhantomInterrogative Man! A *H-U-G-E* thank you for this! Haven't tried it yet as I'm still moving to a new home and my Peg2 is still in a box, but once it's out, this'll be the first to try! in truth, I've managed to run IFX after much hassle, but still without the powerup modules, only the 68k ones. Here's hoping everything will work properly with your script!

OK I have just given your installer a try and it generally works nicely as I can now start ImageFX with out any crashes on startup, but I have found to issues with the install.
Firstly the assign created in my user-startup was missing a space between the assign name and the path. Easily fixed by editing the user startup and adding a space.
Secondly I selected to install all extras and I get an error on startup.
"JSTREAM: Cannot load module from disk (no memory?)"
If I select Okay ImageFX then starts up as expected.
So I have to say a big thumbs up for your installer as it makes installing so much easier under OS4 than is was in the past. _________________ Sam440ep 667mhz, 512MB, 120GB 2.5" HD, OS4.1FE WinUae 3.0.0, OS 3.9, BB3, Catweasel MkIV Amiga 1200, Blizzard 040/40 (BlizzardPPC 060/200 with SCSI removed at present), mediatorSX pci, Voodoo3, PCI network card os 3.9BB2 4MB Minimig with ARM addon boar |

For compatibility purposes, I have not added the PowerUP modules for the OS4.x installation. That may be for a later installer script update. Suffice it to say, 68k modules with JIT are fast. The script does install an OS4 PPC native jpeg loader. If enought people motivate me, I may look into writing some OS4 PPC loaders and savers. There is a big emphasis on the word "may" in the last sentence. Perhaps if I start a donation/bounty for PPC loaders/savers? Hmmmn?

"Why," you ask? I'm glad it works on your system, but for the majority of OS4.x users, the installation script on the ImageFX4.5 CDROM does not work. It does not work with JIT disabled. It does not work when running it from the OS4 native installer. It just does not work at all, because ImageFX4.5 came out before OS4 final. Nova design was not able to write their intaller according to OS4 standards; therefore, it crashes in the middle of installation.
In addition, some of the things the official installer installs overwrite precious OS4 system files. In addition, some of the hooks and modules do not work. In addition, those who use JXFS experience the problem of everything in their ImageFX folder not having the "e" protection bit set. In addition, the majority of users do not want to install ImageFX by hand, not knowing what works, and what does not work. Therefore, I wrote an installation script that dealt with all of the above and more.
Concerning animation and PowerUP, I have not tested either on my setup. The new installation script does not install the PowerUP modules for sake of stability. Since OS3.5, AmigaOS has opted for WarpOS rather than PowerUP. I do not know how compatible the two are, or if PowerUP will even work with OS4.x. I will check into it. If the PowerUP modules do indeed work, then I'll add them in the next version of the installation script as an extra.

Oh really ? Weird....
I was thinking that maybe I just copied it from my 3.9 Amithlon install. I cant remember.
So that maybe is the reason it 'still' works.
Anyway, good work !

After all that proofreading, I missed a space. Oh well. I will get it fixed. Until then, I'll add a comment on OS4depot. Until then, you can open up "Install_IFX" in a text editor. Go to line 290, and add a space after ImageFX4:
Concerning the other issue, either remove JSTREAM, or install the 030 version by hand. I'm thinking of removing it altogether from the installation becuase of its problems.

Just for reference I had already tried removing the loader it was ImageFX4:Savers/JSTREAM.000 that was causing my problems.
So I have put the loader back and removed the saver for now.
I will try a different version of the saver later on if I remember.
Now I can finally enjoy one of the best Amiga 68K programs on my sam440ep time to have a virtual on me _________________ Sam440ep 667mhz, 512MB, 120GB 2.5" HD, OS4.1FE WinUae 3.0.0, OS 3.9, BB3, Catweasel MkIV Amiga 1200, Blizzard 040/40 (BlizzardPPC 060/200 with SCSI removed at present), mediatorSX pci, Voodoo3, PCI network card os 3.9BB2 4MB Minimig with ARM addon boar |

This is where having several eyes comes in handy. It is indeed the saver module causing headaches. Thanks for catching that.
@Broadblues
Thanks for the info, even if it is a downer for those desiring PPC modules.
@Those desiring PowerUP
For now the 68k modules are fast enough under JIT.
@Everyone
IFX45InstallOS4 0.6, the "quick fix" version is now available on OS4Depot.net. It deals with the JSTREAM and User-Startup issues.

Not a real problem the installer did not create an info for the ImageFX directory it creates. I only noticed the issue this morning so I missed it from my previous bug report.
If you have setup your workbench to show all files and directories by default you may not have noticed this issue. It possible that this issue is caused by the fact that I had opted not to install the png icons because I have uninstalled png icon support addon while attempting to track down the cause of the graphics corruption with the OS4.1 quick fix on my sam440ep.
As I said not a big problem but if you find any more bugs to fix you can fix it with your next release :) _________________ Sam440ep 667mhz, 512MB, 120GB 2.5" HD, OS4.1FE WinUae 3.0.0, OS 3.9, BB3, Catweasel MkIV Amiga 1200, Blizzard 040/40 (BlizzardPPC 060/200 with SCSI removed at present), mediatorSX pci, Voodoo3, PCI network card os 3.9BB2 4MB Minimig with ARM addon boar |

Many Thanks to you and all involved for a much needed Installer! Everything went fine for a change (!) but I have one major problem on my machine - the 'Load' button does not work ! I see someone else has reported this on the IFX forum, and has got round it by dragging the files to his workbench. I have checked that the correct preview module is present (Windowed CGX), and the graphics are set to 'Picasso96, Radeon 9250, so that seems OK! All the sample files are present, and can be viewed from the OS4.1 picture viewer.
Now here's the wierd thing - I managed to get IFX up and running on a previous version of OS4, but it failed to load on later upgrades. I kept that hard disc (I have my hard drives in a removable bay} and upgraded it to OS4xx and eventually to OS4.1, and IFX works fine on this still. However, the drive is messy with all that upgrading, so I prefer to use the one I installed OS4.1 on from scratch.
Any thoughts why the 'Load' buton does nothing?

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'ASL'. I'm currently using the Windowed CGX preview module, as on the other hard drive, but the preview prefs. don't have ASL in their list. (Sorry to be thick, but I'm currently juggling about seven operating systems on various machines, and the saying 'Jack of all trades but master of none' applies here! )
What I'll do when I've got time is to put the other drive in and make a note of all the settings. Then, I'll compare them with the ones on this drive and hopefully there will be an obvious difference!
If I change the preview settings to a higher resolution, I get a second IFX screen of Cyber workbebch, followed by a guru meditation error! Ho Hum !! |
