| It's seems that Skype is open source: is that true? Someone has reverse engineered the protocol and the source are available for download.
Maybe a port could be considered.

Skype is now owned by Micro$oft so I very much doubt it's open source. I fear for it's future on Mac and Linux machines never mind AmigaOS!!!

No, Skype is freeware but we can hope in some opensource solution instead.
There are Asterisk, Ekiga, Empathy, Google Talk, Kopete, Pidgin, QuteCom and maybe more but i don't know if they are easy portable _________________ BACK FOR THE FUTURE

Uh ? If you think that a software is opensource why argue about legality ?_________________ BACK FOR THE FUTURE

my mistake. The author stated that skype is open source, but he has reverse engineered the protocol. _________________ retired |

Skype has always been closed source, but multi-platform supported.
How this support continues now that Microsoft purchased it remains to be seen - as it may be the case that the Linux and MacOS versions begin to lag behind the Windows port (as has happened with other acquisitions in the past).
I am hoping that they do not turn it into the practically useless mess that MSN (or Windows Live Messenger as it is now called) has become, adding features that weren't required and generally creating an application that is unfit for purpose. _________________ Test sig (new) |

| Someone reverse engineered the protocol and open-sourced his own code. Skype itself is closed and proprietary. https://github.com/skypeopensource/skypeopensource/downloads
I won't be surprised to see someone in patent violation court for this though.
And under MS's ownership, who will be suprised to see Skype proper end support for Linux and OSX? Time to move on.

a) part of protocol: IM b) it's hard to test because it's not compatible anymore with Skype's servers

It shouldn't be a problem outside US.

Who knows. I'm going to keep using it as long as it's going to work. Maybe in the mean time someone put some polish on XMPP protocols and we'll get something compatible across all platforms._________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. Oh, it is. Clean room reverse engineering is legal. US have “software patents” so if Skype owns “a mean to sign data with strong encryption” it can be problematic, see DVD and DeCSS.
OpenOffice is a bad example because it's more of a clone and you didn't have to look at Office's internal guts to write one._________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. For free. Join today and receive expired $50 cupon from AI! |

IIRC an update for MacOS has been released just a few days ago. Microsoft is no more the Microsoft of the nineties (actually Apple is more similar to 90s MS) and they are quite intelligent to not loose millions of customers i suppose. Btw - luckily - reverse engineering protocols isn't illegal under EU laws.

Being a patent or not, (such) reverse engineering violates copyright, also in EU, also Polish copyright, Opi.
BTW Skype on Amiga = I used to be using IM+ (web) while on MorphOS, now I use IMO while on Kindle.

maybe its illegal, but who cares ? As Skype ist available on linux, mac, android, ... by several programs it should be possible to have it the same way on amiga. Skype wont care about this if it doesnt on other platform.
Another idea: We should have a browser with stable working http://imo.im Last edited by Beeblebrox on 05-Jun-2011 at 07:16 PM.

M$ will continue to support (actually they released a 4.x for Linux not too long ago and I can't remember how long it was under the last owner of Skype that they released 2.2 Skype for Linux) for Linux/Android as it is a market they want to penetrate as deep as they can. M$ knows that they can't trump Linux/Android, but they can go after and dominate certain application markets that they would normally be shut out of if they were to go M$ centric.
