thanks to the review in Amiga Future's last issue I decided to try out Flare today at os4depot.net. Since I'm a sucker for good ol top down dungeon crawlers I thought the gameplay and graphics were quite good BUT can someone please tell me how you can attack with the mouse?? or keyboard combo?? i tried a bunch of things but the character does nothing

edit: problem solved with new version v0.16

@klx300r

I finished it a few weeks ago.
You have just to click left mouse to attack. May be you didn't equipped with a weapon, did you ?

It is good game, a bit slow on SAM 800.

Cheers,
YesCop

Some day this probably won't make nice on most sub gigahertz setups, but let's hope that isn't just yet.

@Gebrochen

I was addicted too.
I spent a few hours may be 4 hours to end it and redo some levels for fun.

@Yescop

How did you do that? Only levelling up from level 4 to 5 or the next ones took me more than 4 hours! And all the level 7/8 cretures within the cavern dungeons made this impossible for me! Now I'm at the 3 or 4 brothers (or sth. like that) but did not play it for weeks.

I used to play it on Peg2 and WinPC. Furthermore I talked a lot by mail with the author of the original game on how he achieved all the things.

Yet another game that won't start without a sound card...

@amigasociety

I would try it if I could. I haven't had a great need for a sound card yet & the game refuses to start without sound support. I'm not into games enough to spend money on a sound card. My micro fills my audio needs for now, so depends on when we get the on-board audio driver for the x1000. I still look for a cheap pcie card on ebay though, want to keep 1 pci slot open for an older gfx card. The x can handle 2 gfx cards if each has a driver, seperate monitor for each.

@amigasociety

I am but it's actually slower on my X1000 than on my sam flex, I get a dsi when starting it on the X1000 which is probably the reason for the slowdown if lots of dsi's are being ignored.

@Reth

I was thinking a bit more and I underestimate the time, it was more around 10-12 hours, I think. I could not be more accurate as I made some levels a few times for fun.
The question to ask to the authors is not how but when, when does hi plan to achieve this game ? There are some places not used in the game like the bridge to quit the world, may be.
As my level went up, to get rid of strong/numerous ennemies, I used the spell which stopped the enemies ' course, very efficient.
Enjoy the game

I take it your Beta System X1000 does not have the same sound card I do then on the FC system?

I should give it a whirl then and see.

@ sundown

ya it needs a sound card to run. Try it on your micro as it mighht have enough juice to run it smoothly.

@amigasociety

I only order the board, had the case, drives, & gfx card already, never bothered with the audio card. Maybe this month, or next, I'll see about getting an audio card.

But why? It should just run, there must be an option to turn off sound if ppl want.

I will try it on the micro, but no joystick, so maybe another issue, something else I need to buy.

Flare is (typically) played by mouse, a joystick is pretty useless.

@Yescop

Hm, seems I took my level points on the wrong strenghts! I levelled up mostly in range weapons to get more power in them. Afterwards I begun to strengthen my magic powers.
So the freeze of lots of enemies for more than 3 seconds I'm not able yet (just nailing them one after each other for 3 seconds with that magical shot).
Which spell did you use and how did you finish all the level 8 creatures in the caves at once?

Best Regards

Now you get to have permanent death, oh joy.

@Severin

How does 0.16 run on X1000?.

@sundown

I played this game on AROS a few months ago when I thought I was having problems with sound (turns out to be my own silly fault). Eventually I got it working simply by setting ahi prefs to void. It started working once I had done so. Thankfully I worked out my sound problem shortly after anyway, but perhaps its something you could check too?
Also you dont need a joystick, its mouse controlled :)

@Thematic

I've no idea. the version on os4depot is 0.15.

Edit: found it in the upload queue, installing it now...

DO NOT INSTALL OVER V0.15 YOU NEED NEW MOD FILES

Edit: ok, downloaded the linux distro and found a small bug, the saves drawer isn't used (missing /) so saves are in progdir: as savessave1.txt etc.
Runs very slow but I'll try tweaking the settings.

Yet Another Edit: ok. setting hwsurface and doublebuf to 0 really speeds the game up (about twice the speed of 0.15). it runs great on 1024x768 although 800x600 is probably the best resolution to use.

Great work
