@All

When you purchase a graphic card in a shop, you also pay for the driver for Windows/MacOS. Amiga companies tried very hard not to make you pay AmigaOS drivers. Now it's just not possible anymore.

Never forget there is nothing free in this world. There is no reason to react...

@elwood

Probably I should agree with you, but why opening a thread for that when there's already a news item?

I am looking forward to enjoying Modern graphics cards on my Sam440ep-Flex and not having to wait until OS4.2 to do so.

I can't understand why hardware manufactures tie themselves down so to one (windows), two (mac) or, if we are very lucky, three (linux) operating systems.

I can only assume that it just costs too much to pay an employee to support "hobbiest" platforms --if you figure that every given platform is complex enough to warrant a dedicated developer. If you pay that guy $60,000/yr how many buyers do you need at $20 a pop per driver?

Goes to show why it is so important to have a common low cost hardware platform.

@elwood:

It's nothing new in Amiga-land. IIRC for Picasso 96 you had to pay if it did not come with your video-card. Likewise with Cybergraphix (I did it, tried it on the PicassoIV and decided not to use it). Also, when you wanted more than half-decent print-outs, you needed to trade money for Turboprint. Without Scanquix my SCSI HP Scanner was nothing more than an expensive (and huge) ornament on the desk. Remember the whole suit you needed to pay for to get the Amiga on the internet?

Sure, the Amiga is an expensive hobby, has been since day one. In the late 90s I looked with some jealousy to the PC owners as they were purchasing less then cheap memory upgrades, harddisks and the like but when I did fork out some money for decent hardware / software it hurt for a day or two and that was it.

@elwood

agreed, from the news item thread:

"this is great news as it shows development is pushing forward. Surely many of us here have willingly donated to numerous bounties in the past and will continue to do so in the future so consider this small fee a donation to Hans for all his hard work

A good friend of mine worked for ATI here in my home town for many years and all he did was work on the install scripts for various video card drivers and he was getting paid very well indeed so we must put things into presepctive here in Amiga land"

@klx300r

not fully agree... that might be acceptable for the small community left but it is certainly not acceptable for anyone outside. The hardware is already expensive and noone will understand to pay extra for drivers. Aros is running on standard hardware, MorphOS is running on cheaper hardware and drivers do not cost extra. And noone who normally uses Windows/Linux will accept that.

People outside the Community will be buying new hardware which will have the driver cost already built-in to the product package price, so they will not need to pay for the graphics drivers.

What I can't understand is why Hyperion keeps charging money for OS4. I mean most of the work is being done either by bounties, by paid drivers or free of charge, based on the hobbyist attitude of users and developers alike. It isn't that OS4.x has massively progressed throughout the years featuring automatic stack, memory protection or multi core support. It took, almost 5 years (?) to come out of the "beta" stage and all the recent updates look like stability fixes, making the initial release (4.0) looking more "alpha". They don't add anything particular to the system. Having said that, I don't believe that paying for drivers is necessary a wrong step; perhaps, it's a step towards liberalizing AOS sources on a more open environment where users will determine the next steps of development either by their opinions or by their money.

@amigakit

I did not argue against Amigakit or a-eon. It is not the duty of Trevor or you to do the work of Acube (that gets the money for the hardware). But it will propably result in upset users if there is not found a satisfying solution.

We will shortly offer SAM460ex with the driver price built in when a customer selects a suitable RadeonHD card. This way they will pay just one final package price.

@Cool_amigaN

They got the Frieden's on the pay roll. Looking at the price for it I think it is a modest price considering the amount of money they would require keeping it all cost effective.

@elwood

well...

you can think that but I'm not completely agree with you...
Why pay for a simple 2D driver? When you buy a gfx driver you hav alo 3D included...and,naturally also overlay h264 acceleratiuon and so on....
Why we have to pay fo a 30% done driver? Why didnt simply set up a bounty that will be filled up in few days?

I really cant get that...

@Tuxedo

You will pay for 2D drivers for the time being, but I'm sure that you will get free updates including 3D drivers as well (at least till v1.0).

@amigakit

Any plans for those of us with older hardware like Sam440ep models ?.
The more purchasers of the Driver the quicker the development costs recouped.

I can confirm that this adapter works with the Radeon HD 4000 series cards and Sam 440ep Flex.

How about this card for PCI

I guess it's no different from purchasing Turboprint to get decent printer drivers!
