DVPlayer issues

0) My setup
AmigaOne 500 w/OS4.1v4
2GB RAM
HD4650 gfx
Onboard sound
64GB SSD (main)
500GB HDD (secondary)
4-port SATA PCI card
Netgear WNCE2001 ethernet-to-wifi gizmo
NEC 20WGX2 Pro monitor

1) Drawer icon size
I installed the DVPlayer demo to Utilities. I decided to do the expert installation just to see what it involved. At one point I was asked to choose icon size.

I compared with the other icons in Utilities and decided size 56 looked closest. But the drawer ended up much smaller than the others. So I tried to reinstall, this time choosing size 64. But the size of the drawer did not change. So, erm, how do I make it the same size as the others?

2) Subtitles
I have a DVD with NO, SE and FI subtitle options. But no matter which I select in the subtitle menu, subtitles end up being FI. How come?? Changing audio stream works fine though.

3) Fullscreen
I know fullscreen is disabled in the demo. But I remember from the OEM version (0.72) that came with OS4 that going fullscreen only gave a black screen, on my setup atleast. Is this a known issue, or something wrong on my end? If its a known issue of 0.72, is it fixed in 0.76? I'd be happy to pay for DVPlayer Full, but I need to make sure it will get proper fullscreen out of it.

Thanks for any input! :P

@Androxyn

1) Drawer icon size is fixed. The icon size you choose during installation is for the executable, not for the drawer.

2) Have not seen this issue, it would be good to know if it happens on your setup with just one particular DVD or is a general issue on that machine with all DVDs.

3) You won't get proper full screen without working overlay. Overlay is not likely to be implemented in Radeon HD drivers, instead planar YUV modes will be implemented for compositing and then DvPlayer will have to be updated to use compositing for rendering. I do not know when this will happen.

It sounds like DVPlayer is using an old-style OS4 icon for the folder. The simplest way to fix this is to click on the folder icon, press LeftAmiga-I (or use Icon/Information... menu) to open a info window, and then drag'n'drop an icon with your desired look onto the icon shown in the window. The shown icon should change, at which point you can click on Save. Done!

That could be due to DvPlayer using a custom low-resolution screen (such as 320x256) for the video. RadeonHD cards don't correctly support such resolutions, so you get a black screen.

Most likely cause of such a low-resolution screen is that it was wrongly added by RunInUAE r6. This will be fixed by the next release of RunInUAE, but if you cannot wait then start Sys:Prefs/ScreenMode, go to the Monitors tab, and then UNtick 320x256@60 & 320x240@60, and then click on Save Monitor, wait a few seconds for harddisk activity to finish, and then reboot. WARNING: This can potentially prevent Workbench from being visible (especially if you make a mistake), so only do this if you know how to boot from OS4's installation CD (or SD card or whatever you have).

That's due to DDC (aka "Detect settings automatically") being enabled. If you UNtick "Detect settings automatically", then you should be able to untick the relevant resolutions, then REtick "Detect settings automatically", click "Save Monitor", etc.

BTW, I believe that ticking "Detect settings automatically" will cause *all* listed resolutions to become unticked when you save. But most likely you don't want any custom resolutions, so this should be OK.

Trouble is, you need to use the "monitor" tab to do that, & its ghosted.

@Androxyn

Just a guess, but open your Devs:Monitor icon info & see if you have a line that says "Detect Settings Automatically". If its there, put parentheses around that line to comment it out, save & soft re-boot. See if that un-ghosts the monitor tab for you.

@sundown (and Androxyn)
In the monitor icon Tooltypes, isn't "Detect Settings Automatically", but rather "DDCMODE". BUT BEWARE that commenting-out that line, when you don't have any (usable) custom resolutions defined, may cause booting problems (either lack of any visible screen, or only limited to 640x480).

MY advice is that if you are fiddling with the monitor's icon tooltypes, then simply look for lines that look like "MODE=320x240@60" and "MODE=320x256@60" (possibly with a "D" at the end), and put brackets around it (e.g. "(MODE=320x240@60)" ) to comment it out. Take GREAT care! Then Save the icon.

@sundown

Devs/Monitors/PCIGraphics has the following commands in Tooltypes:

CMPLENGTH=11
BOARDNAME=PCIGraphics
DDCMODE=All
(VSYNCMIN=60)
(VSYNCMAX=60)
(HSYNCMIN=31000)
(HSYNCMAX=85000)
(FAKENATIVEMODES=Yes)
INTERRUPT=Yes
MODE=320x240@60D
MODE=320x256@60D

Edit: I think either my gfxcard or my monitor insists on going to 1680x1050 at fullscreen, so any app which tries for fullscreen and don't support that res will fail.

How do I force OS4 to ONLY look for 1680x1050 at startup? As it is, it will go black for a while, apparently trying different resolutions before finally landing at 1680x1050.

I can't risk doing the DDCMODE thing since my gfxcard/monitor will refuse to show anything but 1680x1050 in fullscreen.

Monitor is a NEC 20WGX2, btw.

@Androxyn

From Severin (due to a posting issue)

Quote:
Try this in a shell enter:

rename envarc:sys/screenmode.prefs envarc:sys/screenmode.off

delete env:sys/screenmode.prefs

Then run screenmode

You should now be able to access the monitors tab.

select:
Detect settings automatically
Monitors Prefered Mode
Enable Interrupts

Then save. If you still can't access monitors rename the envarc file back to it's original name.

@number6

I followed the instructions but monitor was still greyed out.

Edit: When viewing root in Lister I don't see any Env. Should that have been Envarc too?

For dvplayer usage on a sam460 amigaone 500 youll have to have to use the tooltype nooverlay enabled.

@Androxyn
Please follow my advice & put brackets around the low-res MODE lines, like so:
Quote:
CMPLENGTH=11
BOARDNAME=PCIGraphics
DDCMODE=All
(VSYNCMIN=60)
(VSYNCMAX=60)
(HSYNCMIN=31000)
(HSYNCMAX=85000)
(FAKENATIVEMODES=Yes)
INTERRUPT=Yes
(MODE=320x240@60D)
(MODE=320x256@60D)

(The bolded part is what I changed)

Now (after a reboot) DVPlayer should at least show a screen, although who knows what it actually shows.

Well, bought 0.76, had same fullscreen issue as with 0.72, decided to follow your advice about putting brackets around those lines, and now boots into total darkness. Black Workbench :S Heeelp

Lets not go all hopey and positivy here, and risk losing sight of the important matter: that I can no longer see my Workbench and thus have been rendered Amigaless just like that. Again, heeeelp!

@Androxyn

Can you boot from your OS4.1 CD?

If so then you can go back into your monitor tooltypes and change the settings
