OS4.x A1200 online connection

I have to move from 56k dial-up to a LAN connection. I have a 3Com 3CXE589ET but I am unable to get it to work with OS4.1. Can user(s) please post a few cards that work with OS4.1 so I can get A1200 back online.

Is there 4.x drivers that support A1200 LAN cards direct via the OS? I only see one card in the list (PCMCIA) which seems very hard to find.

I hope the next release of OS4.x support more cards as A1200 now needs to be connected to get updates.

@delshay

I don't know but lot of classic hardware require this option "AllowBasePageAccess" , anyway are you using the right driver?

http://www.acube-systems.biz/compatibility/

I believe some combination of upgrades can render the PCMCIA slot useless, due to memory addresses conflict, don't know the details.

Also make shore none of PIN's are bent on inside or outside of PCMCIA plug, a friend of thought the PCMICA was broken, because head upgraded. he put a normal HD inside the A1200, and not laptop hd, So he removed metal shield, he just put antistatic plastic in-between motherboard and HD, but did not notice hd was resting on PINS to the PCMICA port.

@delshay

When I was using a PCMCIA network card, the card was only seen after the second boot. (Bug in the A1200)
I was using the cnet.device with a 3com (same as yours) and an PSION datacom (don't remember the name)
http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/cnetdevice

A OS4 beta version was available (seems not anymore)
http://www.amiga.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-47448.html

(As I now own a mediator, I'm using a PCI realtek 8029 card in my 1200)

There is an updated OS4compatible list here :
http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=93

And a revised classic FAQ :
http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=93

For your request about more supported material, there is a space for this on the official OS4 support forums :
http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewforum.php?f=36

@NutsAboutAmiga

The PCMCIA card slot is fine as it works with 56k dial-up & CF cards. The above card was detected under OS3.9 but I never used it as I never had broadband. I also have PSION gold cards both old and the newer type "combined it" but I only got the dial-up working under OS3.9 even thou both cards have LAN port.

The 3Com 3CXE589ET can not be recognised under OS4.1,but now I would like a card that's supported directly via the OS but I am willing to install third party drivers just to get A1200 back on line.

@delshay

There is ongoing topic about wireless cards on Amigans.net

http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5967&forum=4

The drivers davebraco linked to is probably the incorrect ones, as this for AmigaOS 2.x and up.
There are Prim2 drivers for wireless network cars on Os4Depot.net

http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=driver/network/prism2.lha

I don't know what PCMICA cards work whit this driver, but anyway.

@davebraco

perhaps you should have included reset patch in startup:

@orange

You really should not need any patches in AmigaOS4, and 680x0 patches will not fully patch AmigaOS4.x, if you must use some classic hacks to configure the hardware try doing that before loading AmigaOS4.1.

I have the hardware reset built into the motherboard so this is not the problem. Its almost likely a software or compatibility problem. There are a few A1200 connected to the net via LAN what card are these users using.

I am going to stay off line for now until a solution is found. I will use the above links to sort this out.

Thanks everyone for your help

@delshay

Are you using the most recent version of 3c589.device (from Aminet. The beta drivers mentioned above have been superceded by new versions on Aminet)?

@davebraco

I don't think there are any 3Com cards that work with cnet.device. They all require 3c589.device. And IIRC at least some Psion LAN cards don't have any Amiga driver.

@delshay

Netgear FA411 works.
You dont need cardreset patches etc as that all done when the OS4.1 kickstart loads.

@delshay

I have one here and it works ok

I'm using cnet16.device V1.9 size 8508 bytes

If you have a subway and posiedon 4.4 installed you can use a dlink usb to ethernet DUB-E100. Slow but it works.

@delshay

If the notch on a card's connector is shaped so that it won't fit into the Amiga's slot, it means the card is 3.3V only and incompatible with the 5V only slot. Forcing it in may damage the card or your Amiga.

There is probably no Amiga driver for the "Combine IT" card's LAN anyway. According to Linux compatibility lists, it has an Axnet chipset.

I have 3.3v on my motherboard its located at the trapdoor & clockport if it is added to PCMCIA slot is the card chipset compatible.

Your 3Com card *should* work. You didn't confirm that you were using the most recent version of 3c589.device, which has a fix for OS4.

EDIT: Inside what, the card or Amiga?

I wouldn't do that unless you really know what you're doing. The 3Com card should be 5V compatible anyway.
