Yeah, I really don't understand that one. Surely A-Eon want to recoup their investment by getting Varysis to manufacture more units so that they can sell more units?!! I would very much like to see full scale commercial release whereby the units are manufactured in a more continuous fashion. Only the second batch is starting now and it's almost 2 years since I saw the prototype at the VCF at Bletchley Park, UK! In normal computer circles it would be obsolete by now and it hasn't even seen 'general release' with OS4.2 or full specification supported e.g. dual cores, etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is good to see continued development of the platform but it is painfully slow with no real long term action plan

"Surely A-Eon want to recoup their investment by getting Varysis to manufacture more units so that they can sell more units?!"

If I have understood correctly, they are not targetting to get the investment back. Not any more. The process became too pricey for that. They just plan to produce x1000 HW without loss to those who want it, while developing the next HW. And I believe, after learned lessons, the next HW might generate small revenue. We will not see that HW during this year, and I'm sure we see some AOS4sMP first.

Like OS4 port for Pegasos II?

OS4 port for Pegasos II was leaked to the public by beta testers 6-12 months before release. We still havent heard beta testers ordering nor receiving netbooks.

Since netbook is "new" hardware like X1000 is they have to find distributor for new hardware and since it isnt going to be Acube it must be AmigaKit and will be available via preorder to interested customers. Before they can sell Netbook to customers they must find beta testers who are willing to buy this hardware.

To give some perspective X1000 preorder started in December 2011 and they are still shipping first orders. Even if Hyperion had the software ready today (I doubt it since no word from beta testers) they couldnt start shipping hardware yet.

I surely hope not, because I guess that would mean beta testers were breaking their NDA. (Whether or not they have received anything yet is another matter.)

Since the netbook and port are very well known statement already, I can't see any significant reason to be that draconian of NDA requirement. Now if a product was not announced many months ahead of testing, might be a different story.

That means there is not much incentive to manufacture the machines in anything approaching the low thousands of units as the more they make the more risk involved in trying to sell them. That means they don't really have to push the platform or attempt to actually sell more machines to new/returning Amiga users . They are instead just relying on the current Amiga user base which is very small and quite a 'safe' market having been starved of fast hardware for so long. So much for an Amiga re-launch then. More like a lesson in technology trying to tread water! Disappointing, since it looks like a very nice machine with a fast efficient OS!

I must have missed the part about early 2012. I can understand then why people expect to hear more.
Thanks for correcting me.

if it's really around 300$ I'd like to get one too

but seriously doubt we'll see it this year and I also doubt it will have all drivers usable from the get go.

Never heard of that either. I only remember something of "Q2/2012" or "Summer 2012"...but maybe I had audio dropouts from the Amiwest video stream...

The actual line was 'first half of next year' so to remain on target that leaves 8 weeks to release the machine. Which considering we haven't heard anything in the meantime does seem a little negative - however given the Amiga's history if I were Hyperion I'd probably too not release any information until it was 99% ready to unleash.

That's 8 weeks to finish:

* Timberwolf
* AmigaOS 4.2
* All netbook drivers

The only one out in the wild is Timberwolf which is progressing nicely, but relies heavily on AmigaOS 4.2 for a massive speed boost - am I concerned? No its the same guys porting FireFox as it is dealing with the Gallium port.
In regard to beta testers and the netbook, does it really need a massive beta tester team? Beyond the TouchPad, Wireless, Video Out and Power Saving, Battery Management what else is there to actually test solely on this netbook? All other functionality of AmigaOS 4.2 can be tested on current hardware.

In my point o view, netbook is far more important than anything you mentioned. It could quickly double or even triple current OS4 community.

I think most purchasers will be existing OS4 users and maybe some curious classic users who have never tried OS 4. To the rest of the world though, the netbook craze has been over since 2009, their sales have massively slumped, it's all about tablets now.

I can´t speak for all Amiga user in the world. However, here in the Czech Republic are maybe 3 times more users willing to buy this netbook than currrent OS4 user base (3 SAMs and 2 Pegaos II ).

Well yeah, if the rumoured price point is true, I'd imagine there'll be more "curious" buys from people who are keen in trying alternative OSes and past Amiga users, I'd imagine it will easily outsell the Sam and A1.

I know many ex. amiga users who have said, that they buy netbook when it is availlable.
