The Laptop itself doesn't look that bad. We don't know much about performance, tho. It's rumored to be weak in multitasking/threading.
Would be best to contact directly the chip producer to find an agreement. LimePC, in fact, can do customizations. Maybe a better processor can be used. There are other vendors, such Pentagron and THTF that should sell PPC netbook and PAD too. Of course current legal situation makes any moves really hard. How the laptop should be called, for example?

http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Tiny-UMPC-runs-Linux/

I'm sure, however, that a simple call to Freescale for a partnership would be only a great deal.

If it is rebranded LimeBook, then it will offer roughly CPU performance of Efika (half of 440EP 666 MHz).

No. 5121e is currently sole CPU/SoC used (and useable) in PowerPC based netbook. There are no higher clocked versions of this SoC (400 MHz is maximum).

@AmigaBlitter

you could do a laptop with another CPU... but in the OS4 market that would mean an astronomical price. Frankly... MOS team got it right

PowerBook is really nice, but I prefer even smaller computers.

Maybe 12" iBooks will be supported by MorphOS in future, 12" PowerBooks are out of question (NVidia graphics).

@AmigaBlitter

I linked to the thread a few times already, but you can read most about the Limebook and th e 512x processor at http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1478&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Dunno about OS4, but on MorphOS cache coherence is a prerequisite. Unfortunately. Because generally the 512x processor family is a nice low end chip series with a pretty competetive price/performance ratio.

I guess with weak multitasking performance you are refeencing to the cache coherence issue. Context/task switches probably lead to cache flushes and hence slow down multitaskng performance.

AFAIK no iBooks are on schedule. Once there was an attempt to work on at least one ibook model, but it's too much effort. Just look how long it takes for the 5.6 and 5.8 Powerbooks alone... The really bad thing which all Amiga flavours suffer from is lack of man power. That's really a pity!

No, it's not.

Freescale created a more powerful processor with the Qonverge platform.

It's a SOC with 800-1Ghz e500 core with integrated StarCore DSP

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/overview.jsp?code=QORIQ_QONVERGE

More powerful than the AmigaOne 500.

Features

e500 Power Architecture core subsystem (800 MHz – 1 GHz)
SC3850 StarCore technology subsystem (800 MHz – 1 GHz)
Security engine—IPsec, Kasumi, Snow-3G
Secured boot
Single DDR3 controller, 32-bit 800 MHz
USB 2.0
2x Ethernet RGMII and IEEE 1588v2
3x JESD207 parallel antenna interfaces
3x MAXPHY RF transceiver interfaces

@AmigaBlitter

Well, there are nice chips from Freescale, no doubt. But who is going to make an affordable board out of it? The Amigamarket is too small to sustain a market.

The e6500 based chips by freescale have been discussed here and on morphzone quite a lot already. Anyway, your linked chip is nothing for a cost sensitive netbook.

Some years ago Genesi planed a netbook around the 8610. Unfortunately the issues regarding the 5121 - the 5121 project had a higher priority for Genesi (the limebook is part of this story) - were too much and eventually they went the ARM route. Pity.

Its a shame there are no plans to bring MorphOS to iBook. I have a iBook sat at work that simply displays Google Calendar all day long.

Which version/model iBook is it that you have?

If it has Radeon video card built-in and it also has USB based keyboard and track-pad, then there is a slim chance that it could be supported after the G4 PowerBook's support is released in MorphOS3.0.

I think that the very last model of the G4 iBook meets these requirements, but no word from the MorphOS Development Team has been issued in favor of supporting any iBooks, so if it ever is supported, it will probably just be because one of the MorphOS Development Team gets his hands on that model and tries it out and finds that the version of MorphOS3.0 that they have already written will work on it and they only need to add the identifier for the last G4 iBook to the list, or what ever else they do to add a model to their list of supported models. Sort of like the support for the 1.42GHz G4 eMac was added after they found out it worked the same as the 1.25GHz G4 eMac model.

We will have to wait for MorphOS3.0 to be released and then try to install it on your iBook and see what happens?

Hehe.

Pick up the phone and do a simple call. They are anxious (eager) to find partners that want to use their chip for the emerging IT trends such tablet, smartphone, various digital devices... I'm sure that their chip and technologies can be really competitive with other similar tech. So, to me, it's only a matter of being enterprising, resourceful, maybe a little adventuros to achieve results.

There are two or maybe three OS's than can be offered to the PowerPC land. Don't you think that they would be more than happy of this?

Am i saying that such operations is without risk and so easy as get a regular morning cappuccino? No, No... but as the saying goes: where's a will, there's a way.

@AmigaBlitter

Those chips are SoCs yes, but they aren't very good for netbooks, having no graphics controller and no way of actually attaching a graphics controller.

Only two SoCs have a graphics controller on-chip and that's MPC5121e and MPC8610. There's nothing wrong with using the 8610 in a laptop, but the max resolution is a tad low (I think it was 1280x720 while most laptop screens are 1366x768. Or something like that, it's been a while since I looked into it).

Another alternative is to use a P-series QorIQ and hook up a display adapter over PCIe.

Basically there is no good netbook alternative due to there being no good graphics adapter one can use. Maybe someone with experience in using a Radeon Mobility could do one.

For some reason I ALWAYS forget the P1022 has LCD controller. Max 1280x1024, 24b 60Hz, dunno if it can do 1366x768 which would be fewer pixels. For a netbook it would probably be fine.

Yes. In my imagination P1022 should be equally or better usable than the MPC512x (even when there is no GPU accelerations). P1022 could have also mobile GPU for bigger than notebook setup.

I see some small chance that there will be some OpenGL2.0 capable NEW PPC SoC in the future as well. Not holding my breath, though.
