| A couple of weeks ago I stripped my AmigaOne down so that my brother could solder in a new battery holder.
I've finally got it back and built it up again but I'm not getting a display.
I've hooked up the AmigaOne's serial to my PC using a USB-serial adapter. Using a terminal program with the baud rate set to 115200 I get the following output.
U-Boot 1.1.1 (Mar 3 2005 - 16:42:53), Build: 03/03/05

edit. Deleted second list of events, I must have reset the A1 whilst writing the log. Last edited by Rob on 14-Sep-2009 at 04:52 AM.

I had this not too long ago.
What I did to fix it was put a different graphics card in, wait for uboot to show up, turn it off, put the original graphics card back in and all was well! _________________ Back to action! |

To narrow down the possible causes of failure, you might want to try again with only your gfx card and one memory stick connected.
The most likely culprit would be the battery or its holder, so I'd start by checking that the holder was mounted with the proper polarity, and that 3 or more volts can be measured at the RTC chip, coming from the battery.
Also double-check that all the jumpers on the motherboard are still there, just in case one fell off somehow.
Next would be the gfx card, but since you don't even get the stdin/stdout messages from uboot, it looks like something else makes it reset before getting to that part. In any case, the AGP slot on the A1 can be a bit resilient so make sure your gfx card really is sitting all the way in.
Maybe the uboot settings in pram are trashed or some register in the VIA chip is stuck in some invalid state, so you might as well try the old trick of yanking the power cord out of the PSU while the machine is on. Sometimes it helps.
I'm not sure what else I'd look for as your not getting far enough to interact with uboot. _________________ AlexC's free OS4 software collection

3 things I can think of.
1) UBOOT settings are wrong, remove the CMOS battery for long period of time.
2) Bad Ram type buy new ram or try a different RAM slot.
3) Some hardware you have plunged in does not not allow your Amiga to boot, unplug every thing, try only gfx card and mb, and see if that works.
Oh and check for bent pins on all ports USB/ATA/ETC. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 13-Sep-2009 at 03:35 PM.

| This happened to me when I first powered up the A1 after many months (probably more than a year).
I got one solitary beep out of the motherboard and that's it.
It turned out to be just a flat battery. Once replaced it was absolutely fine, aside from having forgotten the date. _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

Battery voltage is critical, any voltage, 3 volts or lower, can cause problems. If you have a voltmeter, you can measure it between the case metal & the top of the battery. Never get cheap by installing a used battery. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

| Thanks for the replies everybody.
@BinoX
I've just raided a PC at my parent's for it's Radeon 9250, so I'll try that later, although I did try a PCI X1550 and didn't get any output from that either.
@AlexC
When I posted last I had just the memory and GFX card added.
The battery holder is the right way round. I'll have to dig out my meter to measure the battery's voltage, would Uboot even initialize if the voltage is too low, I found that removing the battery meant no output via the serial.
I think all the jumpers are present and correct.
I've just edited my original post as it may have implied that Uboot reset itself, in fact I reset the A1 whilst writing the log and accidentally pasted the second list of events in. I guess this means Uboot hangs rather than resets.
I've made sure that the GFX card is firmly in place also tried a PCI GFX card with no card in the AGP slot.
I tried yanking the power cord, but no change.
@NutsAboutAmiga
The battery was out of the system for about 3 weeks prior to rebuilding. (The battery will have been out for another 24 hours by the time I return home.
The RAM has been fine for the previous 4 or so years
The system is stripped back right to the essentials.
all the pins are fine.

Ah okay, I thought you were getting a loop.
So, basically it stops just before it would display...
FLASH: 0 kB
At least we can rule out the gfx card for now as it doesn't even manage to check the flash ram (the empty socket between the AGP and IDE header).
If the battery is weak it will still try to boot but the system behavior will be very unpredictable so before trying anything else make sure your battery is still good or just put a new battery in.
My guess is that on some A1s the RTC is powered by the battery only (reversed diodes?) and that the VIA686B chip directly depends on the RTC for its own timing. That would explain why the battery runs out quickly and then leads to an unstable system. Just a guess though.

Just a quick note because I had the same problem. I changed the battery and UBoot came up OK, but offered the chance to set the default settings or try to recover the original settings. I thought I would try to recover the settings that had worked before. I discovered that always results in a blank screen for me.
Try taking out the battery and disconnecting the mains supply for a minute or two. Put the battery back and see if UBoot appears. Set UBoot to the default. I found that working through the UBoot menu settings was enough to get it booting using the SII IDE card.

I hope you don't mind me coming in on your thread, but I have virtually the same problem with my own AmigaONE XE. The difference being that my machine was in use for about 10 minutes, when the display froze - a reboot resulted in no video output. I've tried everything listed here: http://amigaworld.net/modules/features/index.php?op=r&rev_id=174&cat_id=16
all to no avail.
The debug I get over serial;
U-Boot 1.1.1 (Mar 3 2005 - 16:42:53), Build: 03/03/05
CPU: MPC7455 v2.1 @ 800 MHz Board: AmigaOne DRAM: Slot 0: vacant Slot 1: vacant Slot 2: vacant DIMM0_B0_SCR0 = 0x00000000 DIMM0_B1_SCR0 = 0x00000000 DIMM0_B2_SCR0 = 0x00000000 DIMM0_B3_SCR0 = 0x00000000 DRAM_GCR0 = 0x00000000 Refresh set to 2083 clocks, auto refresh on DRAM_REFRESH0 = 0x00019823 *** failed *** ### ERROR ### Please RESET the board ###
So, how does one go about "resetting" the board?
I have a strong hunch that the ROM located at J13 has become corrupted, or else the chip itself could have failed. If so, where can a replacement be obtained, ready flashed for use?
Any help gratefully received, though I will be off on holiday tomorrow and will have to get back to the AmigaONE when I return.

Just measured the battery voltage and it's 3.05v so that should be fine. I even found a battery with 0.97v and the A1 wouldn't even output on the serial at such a low voltage.
edit.
Just took the simm out of bank 1 and it worked. swapped the simms round and it's working fine again. Bizarre. Last edited by Rob on 14-Sep-2009 at 11:50 AM.

You're getting that error because there's no RAM plugged in, what output do you get with a simm plugged in. |

At 3.05V, that means the battery has hit a more rapid decay point of its life. Either measure it once a month or buy a fresh battery & not worry about it for awhile. A fresh battery should measure around 3.16V. May not seem like much of a difference, but it will hold that voltage & not drop until it reaches end of life._________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

I have same problem here.
My Amiga One doesn't show U-Boot screen,only black screen and the monitor doesn't turn on.
This have been after trying to put a DVI cable to get a better image.Now I have all unpluged except the Radeon 9250 graphics card.I have plugged the IDE cables on VIA686 and I will go for the battery extracting for some few minutes.
I anyone has an idea I would appreciate it very much and excuse me to the opener of this thread if I do this on his thread. _________________ AMIGA 500 1.5 MB ACA500/ACA1232 accelerators AMIGA 500 German CD32 unexpanded Amiga 1200 Tower on AmigaKit since years AMIGA 1300 030/50 Mhz/32 MB WB 3.9 with lots of games&demos AMIGA ONE XE G3 PPC 800 Mhz/1 GB RAM/RADEON 9250 128 MB/SATA CONTROLLER |
