Question...

I am considering buying an AmigaOne X1000 and then slapping a VIA PCIe 1x USB 3.0 card in later on. Is USB 3.0 support planned for AmigaOS in the near future or am I looking at a pipedream?

Too soon. None of the machines come with USB 3.0, PCI-E x1 cards are not yet supported and USB 2.0 support is stable, but not that fast.

I would recommend you to buy the X1000 anyway... but hold off on buying the USB3 hardware for now,
you may find you don't actually have any immediate need of it.

But if you want to write the driver for a USB3 chipset to work with AmigaOS4.x ... go right ahead.

I don't know if USB3 is a different software stack than USB2/1. But regardless we need device drivers for the chips. That sounds hard for Via Labs VL800 chips, no docs and no Linux driver that I was able to find. NEC/Renesas don't sound keen onsharing docs, but they do have an open-source driver in Linux. Texas Instruments seems to have their docs for free download, no NDAs needed. My vote for first support goes to TI.

Also note that USB3 chips are also USB2 chips, so that is probably first step for drivers, then they are useful that much while we wait for USB3 support. The x1000 already has USB2, so maybe that's not an interesting level, but it's something.

But we need to get whoever works on the USB stack and drivers excited about this. I don't know who that is. I have a 4-port TI USB3 card that I'd send whoever this is. (It's a Koutech IO-PEU436, though not as easy to find TI based cards as NEC and VL) Newegg sometimes has them, and I also found them at RAM Electronics. I don't know about a card with the 2-port chip on it. TI also has a dev board but costs 3x as much.

@billt

There has been some discussions about USB2.0 for OS4.x in the past. What is the current state of the USB2.0 performance under OS4.x?

Has anyone tested the USB2.0 performance on the new X1000 computers and OS4.1.5?

@amigadave

Works really good but is not so fast like on Windows .
Maybe it will come and update with more speed.I don`t know that
I think we don`t get USB3 in the next time(I mean in the next few years)

Hmmm - does/would the Debian Linux for the A1 X1k support USB3?
In this case there could be a use for this card...

@Dandy

Well the trap is buying Hardware before the support is available, it helps when developers do this and have an interest in the device drivers being made..

The question would be getting a developer interested in making the drivers or finding out what existing driver can be improved...

Who did the original work? is there any NDA involved? legal stuff can and has derailed projects before?

my own suggestion was more of a short wait and see and then go and buy the hardware anyway...
If the existing USB2 driver developer can be interested towards expanding support for USB3 controllers as well then all the better...

Maybe suggest and make a bounty for that developer to fill, or even pass code to someone who can legally fill that bounty?

make it a win-win and things progress forwards... make a lose-lose and the brown meets the spinning thing...

It's not even stable - at least on the SAM440 - the amount of times I have to disconnect and reconnect keyboards and mice to get them to work after they randomly stop working is unreal, and incredibly annoying.

@Belxjander

Ill donate a texas instruments based 4port usb3 board. Ti posts their docs for this openly, not even a login there to get them.

Only legal stuff is on amigaos side. Can anyone (who is a capable progrmmer of such things of course) make a usb driver, or is there one person that knows this? (I hope not, what if he gets hit by a bus then we're all screwed)

If only I had a place for a desktop id have my xe running and if I had time (I so wish I had a lot of this time stuff) getting uboot friendly with pci bridges. Then I could load up on pcie cards to play with. I got to learn a bit about usb at work. Now I'm learning sd cards.

If your going to wait and then buy it anyway, what have you gained? A reduction in price compared to today might be worth something. I don't expect that. Perhaps you need to wait for a new factory run anyway. Perhaps if you wait too long you'll miss out on that. I'm waiting for a laptop I can't buy yet. Both the ivy bridge and the amiga netbook types. I don't wait by choice though. I really need a more useful pc, and netbook gets me back into using amiga again after years of my stuff in storage.

"when hell frezes over..."

It has done so many many times. Not sure if during this year, yet, though.

Some hell freezes:
-someone from tiny Finland won F1 world championship
-Finland won Eurovision song contest
-Finland won world title on Ice hockey
-AOS4 was released
-SAM was released
-x1000 shipped to customers
-MOS architecture change was announced
-Timberworlf...
etc...

Hell seems very cold place nowdays me thinks...

The linux kernel supports nec/renesas usb3 chips. One would hope that compiling with that enabled gives you usb3 on x1000 for those. I'm not sure about the ti chips. Didn't sound like via labs supported linux.

"the amount of times I have to disconnect and reconnect keyboards and mice to get them to work after they randomly stop working is unreal, and incredibly annoying"

I have that too on my SAM.

But also on x86 and windows at work with WinXP.
(happens rarely on dekstops, but often with XP based test equipments like Agilent network analyzers)
I wonder why USB is so poorly working standard?

Is it invented by the $atan himelf?
(BillG is pretty closely like satan amongs home computers, just IMHO)

@RhapsodyGuru

From the SAm460ex Uboot update 2010.06-05

So "some one" is testing the USB3 hardware at least .

Because like most "standards" manufacturers don't stick to it rigidly and numerous small workarrounds are required, windows etc has many more workarounds in place so mostly does better.

Well, 3 Finnish drivers have shared 4 championships between them since the games began. Finnland has traditionally been a pretty productive little country when it comes to motorsport.

I'm well on topic, right?? :)
