Well its been how long now since the "announcement" about an Amiga os4 laptop and not one bit of news or screenshot?? Very strange.

I'm glad in a way as development time is being spent on Sam support, Firefox, OS4 software components, and X1000 project. all more important imho

It's netbook, not laptop.

As laptop support requires 5 years to be built in MOS (4 years since first demo), I doubt Amiga Netbook can be supported in less than a year.

There is a netbook for Amiga fans, runs and hides.

@Toaks

I hope its before Amiwest and if someone from Hyperion is reading this, I hope they'll get in touch regarding the above sentance.

Which is why when I was paying for IntelGMA driver development I did not mention it, yes it got leaked a few days early but at least people just went, wow, instead of asking "Is it nearly here yet".

I assume that did not break my NDA.

Although, have broken this rule with the Aros on Raspberry Pi though

@realize

It was October 22 2011

Hope it will make it for its b-day

X1000 is on slow pace as well as OS 4.2
Timberwolf is advancing, but without OS 4.2, its core drivers, final TW
it wouldn`t make much sense anyway

Article on Oblagment shows that target hardware is quite weak (even it would be good to keep supplied OS also) and it will need some effort to make OS4 like something you want to mass display on it. Its good its still less demanding OS and more responsive then Linux but it needs Gallium or some gfx chip utilization. Plus Wi Fi, Energy saving, webcam and maybe few more features that OS is lacking.

You know all the answers and amiga realms :) Imho announcement was made just because of amiwest2011, to have some interesting info on it.

I also just in case of interest, go at os4 wiki page, and found:

Quote:

Discussions at AmiWest 2010
In October 2010, at the yearly Amiga show, AmiWest, AmigaOS 4's future and anticipated features were planned/discussed and/or announced including:[40]
Multiple core support (SMP)
New Exec scheduler
Selectable policy for scheduling (may include per task)
Scheduling of task groups with internal scheduling of tasks within that group
Scheduling of tasks across multiple CPU cores (may include core affinity)
Support for real-time scheduling
Graphics and Gallium3D
Enables access to full OpenGL implementations like Mesa
Compositing may be done via Gallium3D
Opens the door to replacing the entire graphics subsystem
multi-header support
USB 2 support
Support for more than 2 GB of RAM

As far as i know, only usb2 released, dunno about other parts. That all really sad, and show how slow everything going on. You can forget about amiga stuff fo _YEARS_ and when you will come back, nothing will be changed, everything will be the same "soon".

Even my bets for 2 years for gallium was way to optimistic seems. And my new bet: netbook will out in the middle of 2013 :)) (without drivers of course, so +few more years to finish them, same as with sam460).

Maybe they want to show something when they really have something ready to show.

In my point o view, netbook is far more important than anything you mentioned. It could quickly double or even triple current OS4 community.

Comparing years 2002 and 2012, it was great leap forward in OS4 developement. However not that far we would like to be.

I don´t know if this is realistic or optimistic estimation. However, I would like to have something portable with OS4 for my next birthday, so Hyperion has more than 2 months to complete this work... or another year and two months.

Most of Aniwest mentioned features should make it to OS 4.2 and we should have it by the end of this year. Having OS 4.2, finalized X1000 and the nettop would be a great success by Xmas 2012 and I hope they will make it. SAM 460 should also be fully supported by OS 4.2 as well as RadeonHD driver finalized. That alone will be the biggest jump so far

So, yes, if none of that goes by summer 2013 AND they release one more board with beta software, I will become pessimist. Before that, looks nice and promising.

And it never was promised to come out soon either.
In fact from what i read it, it seemed like it could take quite some time.

@Tomas

when announced at amiwest last year, it was clear the intent was to ship during the first half of 2012 -- but 'no promises' were given. i'm actually rather disappointed in the way things have gone since then; if hyperion shares any news, they get trashed. so then they don't share news about previously announced items to avoid absurd accusations on the boards and the rest of us lose out on what's coming. i'd quite like to know where things stand, frankly.

when i joined the community back in 2010 we were all excited; i remember seeing the SAM460 demoed and the X1000. at amiwest that year the future looked bright: a new printing system, a new 3D graphics stack, AVD and REBOL3 coming to the platform, the works. and since then we're still waiting for completed drivers for the newest systems, no recent word on OS4.2 features and how far along development is, the X1000 is only available in dribbles, and carl has dropped off the face of the earth. so has jamie.

damn.

on the other hand my SAM is still very enjoyable to use. i'd just like to replace it with something faster that also has full OS support for all of its features. oh well. hopefully between now and the end of amiwest 2012 all these things will have been addressed. who knows? maybe i'll be able to attend with an amiga NG netbook in tow. hope springs eternal.

well, probably nothing to report. I guess the project hasn't left even the proof of concept stage with a positive outcome, because if it had, we would have seen some evidence that it actually runs. I think the announcement was overpositive - unfortunately a well known and repeating pattern.
