Hi guys!

I decided to open a new theme as I finished all hard stuff with getting Sam 460 ex to work finally!

So - today finally arrived gfx card for Amiga!

It is GV-R465OC-1GI Radeon HD 4650, costed me ~50 euros and here is a link how it looks like:

GV-R465OC-1GI Radeon HD 4650

It was the easiest plug & play. Just forgot to set Boot gfx card to PCI - rebooted, reconnected and AmigaOS4.1 update 4 is finally displaying system in FULL HD at least!

The first thing I did - enabled hardware acceleration of windows - drop shadow, transparency etc.

But after turning this on - system is sloooooow like hell.

So I guess I would need a gfx driver or something? It performs like AGA on large screens, moving windows is almost impossible and there is no happiness except full HD display :)

Please help. As I am "new" to Amiga NG world, I would have probably some questions before I am "back on track".

Do I need to register motherboards, drivers, system, etc... and where? Also where to get new driver, or if you have some idea what to do to make default look [HD display and all system effects turned on].

@djnick

Sounds to me you're either having too high expectations, or you're using the card as a framebuffer device. What does the screenmode prefs tell you? Not an expert myself since my G3SE died, sorry

@djnick

I think the drivers are available from ACube for registered SAM owners.
And there might be some setting needed to enable PCIe x4 speed.

@djnick

that's very strange.. i suspect there is some setup you have to do.. unfortunatly i have no 460ex, but in Italy there are lots of users with sam460ex

Btw, what do you mean with "slooooooow" ?.. moving windows is slow?, with some program?

Hm it writes it is 1920x1080 Radeon HD, not supporting genlock & is draggable...

I dont get - what high expectations, it should be transparent by default and fast...?

System moving windows with shadows on and transparency... Works way slower now than my old OS3.9 on old Amiga here... When disable shadows and transparency, it works normal - quick and fast, but looks not very nice to me. :(

I hope it is up to driver[s]...

@KimmoK

Excellent! That was the answer I am waiting for :)

I just registered to ACube and... waiting for a driver...? Strange that you can`t download driver for gfx card easily.

ACube pay for the driver. They do not want it to go out on the wild (yet).

I have a SAM460 fitted with a RadeonHD 4650 and it flies! Must be something wrong in your set-up, I am running 1920 x 1080 ARGB32 and have the latesd Acube GFX driver installed!

some programs do make window movemt choppy...
that said, its really fast here but it was damn slow on my micro a1 at times (due to low memory for sure)

can you show me a video of the issue?

Slow performance like that indicates that all effects like dropshadow and transparency is done by the CPU in software. I guess that new driver will enable hardware compositing making it fly.

I have an old Radeon 9250 in my A1-XE running in Full-HD 32-bit and I think that flies, so I'm sure yours will too when you get hardware compositing

@all

IT WORKS! FINALLY :)))))

I just got kind reply from aCube - they sent me driver, I installed and NOW System FLIES!!!! AT LEAST!!!

Well I will have some more questions... [after rebooting I get some errors with Internet but Net works].

I will have to copy some .mp3 files [somehow...] to HD and test sound.

OWB can't open GMail.com - > keeps blocking it due to some errors with certificates [!?] so I opened gMail with iBrowse & download driver :)

Ok, will have [after work] look out for Timberwolf :) I am very excited to try everything :)

Offtopic perhaps, but what solutions exist for using all that 1GB of GFX card RAM?
On systems with little system RAM one might be interested in using the extra RAM of the GFX card... for example for SWAP.

@djnick

You can use muiowb or timberwolf beta (from both os4depot.net) for Gmail.

My sam 440ep system is very responsive with composition enabled even using the integrated GFX card.
So yeah, something must definitely be wrong here.
There is no way it should behave like AGA when it runs fine on a lower end system and gfx.

Too high ??
When he say that his refresh was worse than an AGA machine ?

That's because the special agreement signed between Hans (the driver's author) and ACube, so for now the new driver you are using still not availible for all of us but only for Sam460 and X1000 users, for example i would like to test it on my Sam440 but i can't !

@samo79

Strange agreement but I respect that.

Anyway - I have some basic questions before I proceed more [I am also very busy these months with various projects, as usual, but I find some free time in-between work to play with Amiga]. The question[s] are:

1) - how to set up SAM not to type every time I reboot - a command "boota" which will result booting to Amiga OS? Where and how to set default booting to Amiga OS?

2) - I have nice flat keyboard from Genius. How to set Left Amiga key and Right Amiga key to function properly? Where I can set it up? For example, I can't reboot [by holding keys that should be Left Amiga and Right Amiga] but if I press over 10 keys at once ;) it reboots...

3) - Is there a DropBox-like [or real DropBox? hack?] for Amiga? Would be great if it will work somehow, to quickly share files.

Those are a basic start questions. Later comes more advanced ;)

Thank you all for your help!

@djrikki

Wow Rikki - THANK YOU very much!!! You're the man! :) You saved me lots of searchings time :)

- I am typing this from MuiOWB. Currently it is the best browser I have seen so far on Amiga. It has best display font [like on Mac], looks most complete, tabs has icons, very very nice! I've tried Mozilla [Timberwolf], it has great potential but acts very slow at current state and takes over 20 seconds to start. I have Mozilla on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch - starts in less than 2 seconds. So I guess it is up to optimization.

As I am still very new to AmigaNG, I am learning so I will have some more questions :) But it is great fun, I have to say! Now I understand you all outthere :)

Well I've downloaded all stuff you sent & installed them. Here are some points:

1) Jack looks great but seems to have some problems with installation. After reboot it starts but I have some error appearing on the middle of the screen showing that some player can't be saved to Ram Disk: T/ or something, I gorgot, don't have anything installed here yet, so can't printscreen or save state of the window so I will know later.

2) Every time I boot [and it happens all the time since I installed internet] is window staying all over the place - AmigaShell output:

"Network log output

Sun jan 01 07:14:28 1978 [error]: Interface "PPC460EX_ETH" configuration failed with station address = 00:50:C2:80:D5:21 (5,10193, Bad address, Unknown SANA-II wire error 10193).

How to disable this window? I have no idea where to go. I tried AmigaOS/Internet but seems no prefs for it?

3) how can I connect USB when I have only 2 USB outputs on my tower case / SAM460ex output? Is there a hidden USB output or I can get USB splitter to make able connection of more devices at once?

Now I will try to get some sound and see how it works. I hope I won't need a soundcard for having it sound output :)
