Clock and Archiver question

Hi guys

I have 3 very important questions how to set up my SAM460ex and OS4.1 to:

-1- Save time [!] For some reason it has correct tome until I "grab it" '[get it] from online site, and it "works" well untill I turn Amiga off. Next time - clock counts time the moment I turn off Amiga :(

I am sure some boot prefs has to be changed - but what to type and which one?

-2- How on Earth I can add to archive selected files [either from Filer or from AmigaOS windows]??? Right click on Win7 shows standard - Add to archive [.rar or .zip]... How to archive files or directory on Amiga? I must be blind but it is the most wanted thing I am searching for last 3-4 days...?!

-3- Is there a newer version of Filer? My Favorite? Or is there possibility to every standard AmigaOS can become Filer on a click of a button? Filer copy / paste does not work to AmigaOS windows and vice versa and it is really... more than annoying. Like my mind is splitted and I have to decide what to do and plan in advance what I need to do...

And at the end - OS4 is not stable. It keeps freezing from time to time randomly. I heard / read on forums that it is up to OS4.1 update 4. and SAM460ex motherboards..

I hope next update will come in next 3 years.

@djnick

For archive creation, you can use Cranu.

Petrol.

@petrol

Thanks. Will try it.

Other than that - still no help about saving time / clock?

@djnick

I don't know how the clock is configured on the 460 but on my XE and X1000 it's set automatically from the hardware clock when the machine boots so I only have to refresh it online once in a while to correct the internal drifting.

It may be that your hardware clock is set to the wrong time so if you haven't done so already:
1) open prefs/time,
2) get the remote time online,
3) click SAVE to set the hw clock and
4) try to warm reboot to see if it sticks.

If the time is completely wrong after the warm reboot something in your startup-sequence or user-startup may be calling "SetClock" with the wrong settings for your locale/timezone.

If the time is still correct after a warm reboot, try powering the machine off and after a few minutes turn it back on.

If the time is correct then your problem was that you just needed to save the time you got from the network.

If the time is off by a few minutes or completely wrong then the problem is likely to be a weak or dead battery which doesn't keep the hardware clock running.

Let us know what you find out.

Regarding Filer I just tested it. I have version 53.31 and it doesn't look like it's been updated for over two years. It's possible you could useit to add to archives but it looks like you'd need to install LhA and set it up yourself. Yes AmigaOS context menus are sorely lacking!

You can run the FilerCX commodity where you can simply double click in Workbench to get a new lister. However they've made it slightly complicated to set up and you need to specify the program paths in the tool types. It needs to be updated to OS4.1 standards where APPDIR makes this easier.

Now when you say copy and paste do you mean the way Workbench does it? Or at all? I was able to drag and drop files from RAM icon to a RAM lister and vice versa. There is an option to copy like Workbench does in the Preferences. General tab->Miscellaneous->DragmDrop like Workbench.

@AlexC

Finally I've tested clock.

When I open Time preferences and go to Remote, there is Time server set to

ntp.skynet.be - port default, offset auto and - Get Time works. Time is set all well. And after warm reboot - time is working all well too.

But after cold boot - time stopped where it was before cold boot.

What to try now? I suppose it is up to GetTime that starts before Amiga goes online. And thats why I have each time to go to Time preferences and click Get time to set clock working.

If it is battery - where I can find battery [on motherboard] and replace it??

@djnick

Try saving using
setclock save
after you get the remote time.

This is what I have in my S:Network-Startup

C:Date SERVER time-A.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov port 123 >nil:
setclock save

@Spectre660

Well unfortunatelly Setclock Save command didnt help after I received time remotelly. The time is left [paused] when I turned Sam off.

I added your command line and will see how it will act tomorrow...

@Spectre660

I have to admit - YOU FIXED my non-working clock!!! THANK YOU very very much!

Well the point is:

I've added your command line / text:

C:Date SERVER time-A.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov port 123 >nil:
setclock save

to

S:Network-Startup

After next cold boot [today] - Sam shows CORRECT TIME! :)

I think that this is not the solution, first you must discover why your
clock it's not working when yours SAM it's switched off,
setting the clock every time you switch she on it's not the normal
behavior, maybe the battery it's low or maybe not seat correctly

@pvanni

I dont know but clock finally works here.

I remember weird situation while installing system last year - I got one of the strangest questions and one of 2 choices to select, something like:

1) Are you sure you will not use Time settings for Sam to save in memory or battery?
2) Not?

Damn... :) What to choose? One chose lead to non-working battery.
