Get a graphics card that has a bus width of 256 bits.

I just upgraded cards from a X1600 Pro (128 bit width @12.48GB/s) to a 4850 (256 bit width @63.55 GB/s). I am amazed at the speed increase. I can actually watch short Youtube videos at an OK speed with Timberwolf.

The best part is that I paid $20 USD for the 4850!

@PhantomInterrogative

i agree with you, but it's better to choice a 5xxx or 6xxx, you'll get a Warp3D driver in near future !

@SOFISTISOFTWARE

Warp3D is interesting for gamers. The rest might be interested in faster "system".

@KimmoK

Being compatible with Warp3D doesn't mean slower.We're talking a newer family after all.

@KimmoK

A HD6670 with gddr5 memory is faster for 2D and about as fast for 3D and will work with Warp3D for Radeon HD

@Spectre660 et al,

Yes, a 5xxx, 6xxx, or 7xxx will be faster than the 4850... but I got it for $20!

@PhantomInterrogative

Indeed that is a very good price .
I must confess that I got a second HD 4850 myself last year for US$40.00.
The HD 6670 came in at US$65.00

Another good way to increase the speed of a SAM 460ex is a bit more convoluted but it is well worth it. And if done right it shouldn't cost anything other than time.

You take the SAM 460ex based system with Amiga OS 4.1.x, or even just the SAM 460ex board with AmigaOS 4.1.x and you put that system on ebay or Amibay.

Then you take the money from the sale and buy a 2013 middle of the range x86 based PC. Instal one of the free Linux or BSD distributions and then load up Firefox (it's like Timberwolf but for other platforms), and then load up a YouTube video. Not just a short one either, you can play long videos and high definition videos, full screen as well.

Then you can spend countless hours setting the icons, gadgets, and widgets just like in AmigaOS, only much faster.

On the plus side, you can download a whole bunch of cool and freely available applications. Just in case you ever want to actually be productive.

@agami

Well people are talking GPU and Amiga OS, then you start to advertaising Linux/x86? Have you noticed that this is Amigaworld.net, place where people has hobby, Amiga range computers and OS?

What kind of pleasure you get spoiling other people joy? You weren't loved when you was a kid? Because you like to spoil ohther people joy, now when you are a adult? Or maybe you are poor? You need to choose cheap x86 and you are jelous for those who have powerfull x86 computer and also hobby machine?

Could you do that somewere else? I'm curious, what kind of Amiga hobby you have?

At first I was like "don't feed the troll", now I'm more like "don't feed the assclown". Please.

This thread is nonsense as you can't increase the speed in sams(there's no upgradable processor). Is misleading and could confuse people out.

If you equate the GPU on the video card to a coprocessor then you can.
An quite a bit too.

Well, but in my Mac Pro (at work) I changed the graphics card, changed the HDs to SSDs and added mor RAM.

My Mac Pro is now much faster than before, even if I did not upgrade the processor...

if there is a way to tune up a machine, be it with another gfx card, why shouldnt it be communicated? whats misleading about it, provided it actually works? and if people do not try, others will not know..

There are loads of ways to increase the speed of a computer - the CPU is just one of them.

Ask anyone who's put a RAM expansion in an A1200....

Why when you can install Debian alongside AmigaOS 4 and not go all that hustle?
Some of the Linux apps are avail in OS4

Well done for suggesting such a novel idea. I've never hears of such a solution suggested here and I don't think many here would have ever have thought that an x86 system and mainstream OS could provide more power than we're used to from our AmigaOS systems.

Thank you for sharing such insight here. I'm sure that many people will be massively grateful to you for a long time to come.

Perhaps I should have titled the thread "How to increase the perceptible speed of a SAM460ex," or "Increasing the sensible speed of the SAM460ex," or even "My SAM is the same speed, but feels much faster after..."?

I give my apologies for lack of thread clarity.

My next thread will be showing how to use the PCI slot of the SAM460ex whilst using a 2-slot graphics card such as the 4850. How should I title it?
