Hi,

I thought I saw a thread previously on this subject but now I can't find it, so please excuse me if I'm dredgng up something already covered.

After a heart-stopping problem with my hard drive, I bought a 1TB Seagate Expansion external USB3 drive. I plugged it into the powered hub attached to my A1, and while the system recognised the USB device I can't see any extra drives mounted.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is it not backwards compatible with the A1's USB 1.1?

I also tried it in my very old Windows ME laptop and the same thing happened.

Thanks for any info.

@daveyw

If it is preformatted as NTFS then it wont appear under AmigaOS 4.1.
Try pressing Control ALT M and see if anything show up under USB Massstorages

@daveyw

USB1.1 is horribly slow.

@Spectre660

There is a NTFS l:filesystem on aminet, but its only read only. Fat32 works fine. 1.1 is slow but you can get USB2 cards, I use one which is very fast for external HD or usb sticks.

Ah, awesome, thanks, I can see it now.

So I guess I can re-format it as FAT if I want to connect the drive to a PC? Highly desireable for my backups but not essential.

Yes, I know 1.1 is slow. But I have already forked out on 1 USB 2 card that didn't work on my A1. I can see myself buying three, four cards none of which work.

It wasn't a VIA chipset card was it? These have always failed for me in USB2 mode but one did work in Linux.

Yes you can.
By using the format button at the bottom of the USB MassStorgaes window.

No, it was an Ali. I chose a chipset (though not a specific card) that was already reported as working.

Ah I see. Yeah I have a chipset that another OS4 developer has and it works for him. I know the story.

The difference may be that only two port cards work and 3+1 or 4 port cards are broken in OS4. Maybe. Maybe not.

NEC is recommended above all if you can find it. Heh, even a Spider USB card works!

And that's a problem.

Unless everyone I've spoken to is wrong FAT in either 16 or 32 just has a different file size limitation (depending on operating system used).
This is much like the file size limitations we have with the Amigaoid file systems currently in place.

NTFS support however, would allow moving a usb2 drive between platforms without these restrictions. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

@number6

From what I've read since yesterday, the max file size for FAT32 is 4 GB, and max drive size is 2 TB.

Anyway, so far I've formatted the drive as FAT (32?) on my A1. It wouldn't show up on either my work XP laptop or my own WinME laptop, but my PS3 can read it.

Currently (and for the last 15 hours) copying my HD to the drive. Workbench appears to have locked up, but the external drive's LED is still flashing so I'm hopeful it's doing something.

Reading about it last night, it seems quite a few people reformat NTFS drives precisely so the PS3 can see them.

I heard this so ordered an NEC card after two non-working VIA chipset cards (only worked with USB 1.1), and I'm having even less luck with it sadly.

The VIA cards would work on on USB 1.1 commenting out EHCI in Kicklayout, but crash after few mins with USB 2 enabled.

I bought this NEC card last week: http://i.imgur.com/oDWtX0x.jpg

It's even less stable, it only sees the kb/mouse on one in every 3 boot-ups, plugging a USB pendrive in crashes the system instantly and it won't work at all in USB 1.1

I've bought 3 cards now for my A1XE and had no joy, I'm also stuck for a back-up solution so any SOLID working cards would be appreciated, but the "buy NEC, it works!" line I keep hearing is not true for me.

It must be better to get SATA to eSATA converter like this one:

And get a SIL3114, like this one:

And external hd like this one

Davey,

You may not want to hear this right now, but Fat32 will not preserve your Amiga file protection bits (SARWED). It's usually more desirable for program/system files (media files etc don't really matter) - esp if you want to restore backups in future - to archive your system/program drives/folders and copy the archives to Fat32. That way your executable files will still remain executable after restoring the backups.
If you just directly copy all the files you may have to restore the protection bits manually.

PS3's pathetic attempt at 3rd party filesystem support, coupled with broken networking, broken metadata support (and allowing special characters : / ! # to be used in Fat32 filenames, thus breaking the filesystem for any other OS) convinced me that Amiga/MorphOS is actually way ahead of the game in many areas compared to other 'mainstream' options.
If PS3 had been sold primarily as a media centre/home computer it would have been a laughing stock.

Interesting alternative, especially when I already have a Sil3114 card inside my machine.

I bought it a few years ago, installed it but so far haven't attached anything to it.

This is how Ranger sees it, so I presume its all working...

@Boot_WB

Yes, it's media I am backing up, hence the desire for interoperability with other OSes.

Actually, I found that the machine had crashed and it had only managed to copy around 70 MB. It's looking like the A1's terrible native USB support won't allow me to copy more than a small amount of data in one go.

Totally agree about the PS3. One minute it tells you there are no files found on a device, the next minute it can find them! And one odd quirk I found is that if you create a subfolder in AmigaOS on a flashdrive, the PS3 can't find it, but if I use AmigaDOS to copy an existing folder, it will see it.

This is getting a bit OT, but I'm now convinced modern harware designers are obsessed with creating walls that prevent you from moving data between your devices (despite a great deal of hype to the opposite). It was a nightmare trying to get pictures and video from my A1 to my iPad. Eventually found an FTP app that works, although pFTP throws up a Grime Reaper when I connect. My employer just gave me a new phone. My old one would connect to my A1 via USB and appear as a mass storage device. This one only allows data to be moved across via Zune.

Try Directory Opus for the copying.
I have found this works best for me when copying to FAT32 media and via SAMBA.

@NutsAboutAmiga

How do you mount a FAT32 formatted drive connected via ESATA ?
I have not been able to.
No problem with an ESATA drive formated with an Amiga file system
once the drive is powerd up when the Amiga boots.

@Spectre660

Yes that’s the really stupid, as Hyperion put MBR support into the CrossDOS/USB, so it's not really accessible from anywhere else in the OS.

http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/hardware/mountdos.lha

Download mountdos, it can create mount lists for you.

That's the thing. These are meant to be standard chipsets and some don't work. Plus NEC fails as well.

What we need to do is to get these failing cards in the hands of the developers. If they don't know what is going on it won't be fixed. And we are pretty much at the point of developers saying "Well, it works for me."

I got a crash in the first Update 3 EHCI module. But have you tested the updates since and found it still crashes?

Here is a thread I created. I recommend joining so you can submit bugs on the forum. Saving crash logs and USB logs would help for here.

I was given a VIA and then made the mistake of buying another. I also bought an NEC based card for a friend and it worked perfectly! Fancy giving it away!

The thread above also has links to working USB hardware. So to speak.
