I just thought I'd let you know that we now have Linux Mint 11 running very nicely on the AmigaONE X1000. The A1-X1000 is based on a P.A. Semi dual-core PowerPC64 CPU designed specifically from running the AmigaOS. It also runs Debian Squeeze, CRUX PPC, Gentoo and now Linux Mint 11 PPC.

Many thanks for all your hardwork. A donation has been sent.

Dear Trevor,

How difficult was it to install Mint 11 to AmigaOne x1000?
I find MINT very user friendly, and think of AmigaOne x1000 not only
as great AmigaOS 4.1 system, but as of great :Linux PPC workstation too ...

About Linux MintPPC

MintPPC is a Linux distribution for 32 and 64 bits PowerPC computers which is based on Linux Mint LXDE, ported to Debian/PPC. The idea behind MintPPC is to have a fast good looking lightweight desktop manager, which runs well on older G3, G4 and G5 machines. MintPPC is directed to desktop users who want a very fast system without the need to install software themselves. It is easy to use and it is complete. An advantage of this distribution for PowerPC users is that a few bugs, which are always present in Debian/Ubuntu, have been overcome. After installing MintPPC things like battery status meter, laptop sleep mode and sound will work out of the box. MintPPC is not affiliated with Linux Mint but it uses the same underlying source code. MintPPC was first released as Linux Mint LXDE Debian Lenny in May 2010. In October 2010 MintPPC 9 was released which was based on Linux Mint LXDE 9 (Isadora) and Debian Squeeze. In November 2011 MintPPC 11 was released, which is based on Debian Wheezy (7.0) and Linux Mint LXDE Katya (11). Because of a conflict with the Linux Mint team, the name of the distribution was changed into MintPPC. MintPPC is developed by Jeroen Diederen (Linuxopjemac), a Dutch Linux enthusiast who also owns a general website about running Linux on Macs. The new logo and the desktop wallpapers in MintPPC 11 were designed by Ferdl.

@vox

I don't see Teron AmigaOne PPC boards supported. Any chance there will be a release that works on the micro A1?

Thanks,

Scott

Neither is X1000 officially listed, but works with Trevors manual AND Kernel.

Since I dont have XE/SE/Micro A1 I don`t know how old is the last A1 kernel and is it possible at all.
Seems like owners havent been aware of Amiga PPC boards - distro is aimed at PPC Macs

The kernel is not the only blocking point for distribution support.

The thing is that AFAICT every install CD for whatever AmigaOne machine up to now is just a manually modified PowerPC Mac install CD. Unfortunately nobody (including me ) accepted to work on official distribution (for example Debian) support for the AmigaOne (SE/XE/uA1/X1000/500..), because it takes a lot of time. However it is the only way to make it possible at all for distributions to add support for our machines and it would avoid to do the work of creating an install CD all over again for the next distribution release.

BTW: Does the X1000 require a patched Linux kernel and if yes, are the patches available somewhere?

@Geri

Well, also unavailability of old A1 boards makes it quite impossible to provide them to offer support.
Sadly, Eyetech / A1 havent done this in the start, while for X1000 support has been provided from day one, and for SAMs Acube has done needed job.

Dont have X1000 but judging from support forum detailed guide and patches are provided to registered X1000 owners.

I think Eyetech tried to get official Linux distribution support for the AmigaOne in the beginning, but gave up when the DMA bug became apparent and no workaround for Linux was available.

I agree that the situation is much better for the X1000 and Sam boards. However I don't know of any Sam or X1000 related code in the Debian installer for example (otherwise I would expect to find something like a parthenope bootloader package in the Debian software repository - as you can find it for yaboot, grub, etc.). So there may likely be no new install CDs, when support runs dry for these machines (which IMHO would be sad).

I see. Thanks!

Hmmm ... I like real MINT and this light PPC Mint idea
of Wheezy being faster.

Should I install it G5 PPC64 version over Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
