Well, Sony is a bit unique in that they haven't bothered staying within the previous CPU family the last two times, so them shifting again should not come as a surprise to anyone.
If AMD can come up with a solution of an efficient main CPU to replace the PPU and a good GPU with GPGPU replacing the SPEs, then I don't see any downside. How they will handle the backwards compatibility is a good question, though. Maybe they won't?
The way I see it, Cell was a side step on the road towards GPGPU. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C).
