Hey gang,

I know some of you are opposed to Commodore USA, but I made a video of the Amiga Mini unit I ordered and just received in on Saturday. It's a box opening for the unit and I tell you what I think of it so far. There will be more videos to make up your own minds about the computer. This is meant for those who are curious; if you hate Commodore and could careless about them - that's fine, just keep it to yourself in this forum. Thanks.

Ed

I was going to leave a comment but I decided not to.

I'd be interested to see some benchmarks for the latest games that C=USA claim it will run. Also how beefy is the power supply? I hope it's not less than about 400W if it's an i7...

(by the way, can we move this to the correct forum? This forum is for Amiga computers, there's the "Amiga Inc Offshoots" forum for this stuff).

which is a Joke a guy who supports all flavors decides to post a video and people will go looney because it's not where they like it. How about this it's an amazing concept. wait for it. a little longer now. Here we go. If you don't like it just ignore it. whew. I know I know I'm insane why would anyone do that when instead they can post snarky little comments on a forum.
forgot to add I'm sure it will be moved soon enough anyway. :)

I must admit to being impressed that it actually exists, all of the other products they've announced just seem to be photo-shopped images on their website.

@danwood

I suspect it's the only one that does exist.

The apparently hand-painted logo mentioned in the video, coupled with the white box with a sticker on, and the leads outside the box, implies that too.

I think last time Ed said on the C=USA promotional forum that he was fed up waiting, Barry took it upon himself to buy a case off eBay, stick in a motherboard, paint the logo, print off a sticker for the box, and send it off. I reckon anyone could easily build such a machine in a week if they know an engraving company locally.

As I think he's the only person who's ever actually bought one, that would mean that Barry's single-handedly fulfilled demand!

(Yes, it's all supposition, but I'd like to see any proof - not hearsay - to refute what I say.)

It isn't exactly rocket science to get an off the shelve case engraved and a few stickers made up.

@ ALL

I've never understood this incredibly strange box opening video phenomenon on the internet these days...

Are people really so dumb on this planet now that they actually need to watch a video to learn how to open up a cardboard box to get at a product they have bought and if so how one earth do they manage to survive...

I mean, I aint seen videos for them that show them how to open up their groceries so how to the poor souls eat (must be a special social service that comes round to them to open up their Corn Flakes for them)...

Think I'll make some nice wee educational videos for the bewildered on how to open a drawer or cupboard door, think I'll leave how to operate a toilet to a highly trained specialist though...

@Franko

How would this be any different than someone opening a new games system or An Amiga X1000? None. It's meant to show those who are curious about something, what the PRODUCT looks like, not opening a box, which any simpleton can do.

I'm not too surprised the majority of you acted this way, over a computer. Granted, some people still treat Amiga like a religion and way of life, but hey - each their own. To answer some of your questions -

- The Amiga logo is NOT a sticker, but engraved and then (unfortunately) hand painted black to match the case
- The case is Aluminum
- The processor is a Core i3
- I've recorded the video in 1920x1080 mode. May not have been converted to that resolution when I video edited it
- There will be 2 more videos - 1 to setup and show what to expect when you first login, look around etc. The 2nd WILL COMPARE the functionality of Commodore Vision OS versus Windows 7, OS X and. . . .Amiga 4.1.

These videos are meant to show what is available from Commodore- to help YOU decide for yourself, if YOU like it. It is also meant to help you see first hand from someone like you, if it's a realistic product for you. It is also an honest review of what I like and don't like about it. SO just say thanks if you feel my public service is beneficial, and say nothing at all if it's not.

Ed

Thanks.
Reason I asked is that I'm still looking at an issue with one of our versions of MPlayer. It's basically a failure to display correctly on any horizontal resolution not evenly divisible by 16. Your 1920 is, but if the final edit was not, I can see why the problem occurred. Not to worry. Most people here use PCs or Macs, not Amigas, so they wouldn't notice the issue. Heh.

@edponpon

I first want to say thank you for putting up a video. Not that I am personally interested in a CUSA machine, but it does take some time to put up videos, and perhaps it will be of interest to some people.

A couple of quick observations...

It's actually bigger and blockier than I thought it would be. I see you compared it to a mac mini, but it looks like an elderly mac mini. It'd be interesting to compare to a newer mac mini, as well as see how its hardware compares. I have a base i5 mac mini, and it's a lot thinner/smaller than the Amiga mini. I prefer the thinner/smaller case myself.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I thought the logos looked a little cheap/cheesy. The Commodore logo up top was fine, but the big 'Commodore' on the front looked a little out of place, almost like someone attached a big commodore logo using glue. The Amiga logo would have been fine, if they hadn't painted it.

It would have been interesting to compare it to the Zotac box it was patterned off of (if you owned one), but I expect CUSA would really, really dislike that.

I'm curious how this mini even differs from the new Amiga Mio (or Mia) or whatever they named it. The Mio seems to have more or less the same specs, for less money, and a bit of a different case. It too is a Zotac, although the Zotac is a couple of hundred less (minus the Amiga logo).

And I would normally post this in the Commodore forums, but they've been deleting my posts there... so figured they'd probably delete this one too. Their forums are almost purely for advertising now.

@Nameless

The Mio is the same specs as the base Mini ( http://www.commodore-amiga.org/forum/2-welcome-mat/15395-update?limit=15&start=15&lang=en#15428 ) so unless the op got the super duper all singing all dancing initial release or the now top config then he might have a lemmon in my opinion.

I have always thought the unmodified case looked nice. I liked the original mac mini design so this chunkier case would have made a great HTPC. However the branding everywhere looks cheap to me.

The branding, appart from the etched, are stick ons. Maybe I should buy some to turn my tower into a 4000xt lol.
