Hi All,

I have always been a AmigaOS 3.x and AmigaOS4.x user on Amiga hardware and SAM440EP (RIP). I dabbled with AROS on a Dell Netbook but wasn't that impressed.

I recently got myself a free eMac 1.25Ghz and realised I have the hardware to finally try out MorphOS. Still trying things out and never used MorphOS before so bear with me please as I am learning. Lots of questions - I hope people here can help!!

Today I have now got an MorphOS 2.7 install up and running on the eMac, in eval mode until I get everything working correctly. And now, the questions:

1. Installed Exciter Player and Unix Delitracker emulator and it works well, although there are some custom mod formats it doesn't play, unlike the original Delitracker software. I was able to get delitracker running on AmigaOS4 a while back using AHI for output - does this work under MorphOS too?

2. Installed MPlayer and impressed with the smooth playback of AVI's. Installed latest OWB and it seems to work well. Mounting ISO's is a joy and easier than I expected. ShowGirls is a nice fast picture viewer, but perhaps a less racy name and icon would be better and easier to explain to my wife when she walks past! Is there a slideshow or way to navigate the photos without clicking on each one in the preview pane?

3. Installed AmiNetRadio and the mod/flac plugins from morphos-files.net but the program doesn't run at all. Just flashes red in the title bar of Ambient desktop when launched. Can anyone help me with this one?

4. Installed E-UAE and configured the mime tooltypes (per the readme) to load adf's directly from the ADF icons, which works well but doesn't work with the Turrican 1,2,3 adf's for some reason. There is no option to run from the context menu in UAE, but it works for all the other ADF's so a bit confused?

5. Installed my registered Gold ED which works great, although it complained about AREXX during the install, even after I copied the appropriate rexxsyslib.library from the OS3.9 CD. In the end I ignored the warning and installed it anyway and seemed to install and run ok.

6. I tried to run installer for registered Amiga Writer 2.2 but it doesn't launch. Do I need to install installer or any other files from the AmigaOS 3.9 CD for the installers to work? My understanding was that workbench friendly applications could be installed on Morph OS?

7. Finally, I also put the recent and not so recent demos from Elude, Mad Wizards from MorphOS-files.net and the demos run ok, but all but one demo open a full screen session with two copies of the demo on the screen when running! Very annoying and a shame since they run well otherwise. Does anyone know what this cause is or how to fix it?

Still exploring and installing stuff, but wanted to mention that MorphOS 2.7 is interesting and fun to play with, and if I can sort out some of these little glitches I think it will be registered and kept as part of my Amiga collection.

I have uploaded some photos of my new MorphOS eMac on Flickr.

Back to playing with MorphOS now!

At least for the Madwizards demo you need to have a 640x480x8bit screenmode defined (or a 320x240x8bit if you use the "lores" parameter).

It could require some NList classes. Run Snoopium to find out what could be missing.

There is Installer on your MorphOS install already. Have you checked if it is found? Sometimes install scripts use hard coded paths.

1. UADE detects custom formats by extension scheme, so make sure your tunes have a name with an extension. It doesn't like () and maybe other "weird" chars in names too. Which format it doesn't play btw?

No idea if delitracker still works in current MorphOS, i tried it few years ago, it worked with ahi noteplayer, but it did not run really well, not worth imho.

2. In ShowGirls there is a slideshow button in Album manager, press pgdw/pgup keys instead of clicking. Alternatively you can run MysticView and press the S key.

3. Already answered. MPlayer plays mods and flac files too.

4. I guess it just has .adf in filename and the format is different, Ambient displays a file format in the context menu.

5. Make sure you have rexxsyslib.library in LIBS:, rename the one in MOSSYS:Libs to rexxsyslib.library_disabled, MorphOS will detect this next time you update, so you don't need to rename it all the time after installing a new MorphOS version.

Consider installing SDK, it not only brings the gg env, docs and stuff, but also a Scribble text editor

@itix

Thanks mate for this help. Very much appreciated.

AmiNetRadio It was missing the MUI Nlist classes. I didn't download them as the Morphos-files.net website said they were obsolete for older versions or whatnot. Confirmed from the AmiNetRadio readme that they are needed and put them in! Not so obsolete then...

AmiNetRadio works fine now, playing my mp3's as I type this.

Regarding Amigawriter install not working, as you suspected it was indeed the installer location was hard coded to c/installer. I copied the Morphos installer version to c/ and all works as expected. Amiga Writer and Art Effect now installed and working well.

Now looking at the other issues I had and solutions shown in this thread - will report back soon on the progress.

Thanks again!

Catcha,
Epsilon

@Korni

Thanks for the help mate.

1. Custom formats (mainly game tunes) - the ones tested so far that don't play (deep breath):

INS/SNG format (Cannon Fodder), OLDW Format (Old David Whittaker DW format), TFMX, SMUS, SID tunes and the Lemmings songs in CUST format (with Instrument and Song sub-folders).

The example file format of the non working mods is OLDW.filename, MDAT.filename/SMPL.filename and filename.INS/filename.SNG, filename.DAT. They all work in AmigaOS Delitracker...

Normal formats - Normal mod format works ok. IT, S3M, XM do not work.

DW, CUST (except Lemmings), JCB, TF, MOD, S3M formats seem to play ok in Exciter Player using UADE in my testing. Haven't finished all file formats yet but quite a few don't work, OLDW, SID and TFMX being the most disappointing.

I got the custom files in my collection from the Mods Anthology set - Synth CD if that helps at all for testing out. It is frustrating - I kind of expected UADE to have the same format support as Delitracker did. Appreciate any further help with this.

2. Correct on the Showgirls tip - works great thanks. Might try Mystic View soon also to get the slideshow function.

4. Correct. I checked and confirmed this. Context menu says Amiga Disk File for the ones showing the run in UAE option. It says Extended Amiga Disk File for the ones that don't work. how do I duplicate the adf mimetype so it can work with the Extended ADF format?

5. Done this. Good tip for new players

Can I confirm which SDK are you referring to - I didn't see which one in your message?

Thanks again for your help.

As an aside I have now installed the CPU Gauge for Ambient, The shutdown/reboot option in Ambient and the SnapIt which seems to work well. I will upload some more pics to Flickr later. A lot more install work to come.

Getting this MorphOS machine up and running is fun

Catcha,
Epsilon

Y, UADE does not play every tune supported by DeliTracker. Mostly the formats which does not originate from Amiga. It does play TFMX, for some reason UADE on MorphOS doesn't like paths when it comes to score/sample tunes, so it have to be played from the actual dir.

SID4Amiga works well on MorphOS. It does not play some latest SIDs like Fanta - I Love My 64.

This is what i use to play mods, i don't use Exciter.

Command AMIGADOS Run DETACH SYS:Applications/UADE/UADE -p 0.7 %sf
Flag cd source
Flag cd destination
Flag multiple

To edit Ambient actions, go to Ambient Settings -> MIME. You can edit there actions for class or specific format. Alternatively you can go to SYS:Prefs/Ambient/Filetypes and edit them in a text editor.

MorphOS SDK -> http://www.morphos-team.net/downloads

Have fun with MorphOS :).

Showgirls: page up and page down jumps a pic back or forth. Unfortunately slideshows work for albums only (I never undestood why the author refuses to add a simple slideshow, just automaticlly show pics of current drawer). You can use mystic view for slideshows though.
Name and icon of that program had been discussed already. The outcome was that the author likes it as it is and would be rather honest and progressive (who hasn't ever looked at girls?). My wife is actually liking showgirls most of all MorphOS stuff. After a while the name doesn't matter anymore.

Would have been better fix tool type path because when MorphOS is updated Installer application in C: will remain same... Not big deal though.

@Britelite

Thanks for this suggestion - it did the trick! I created the 640x480 8 bit screen in prefs and the Dekadence and Mad Wizards demos run full screen properly now.

The Elude demos run in a window on the desktop rather than full screen though - is there any command line paramter to run them full screen I wonder? (No documentation in the archives)

I got DOSBox up and running too with my old DOS machine C Drive contents migrated and now running nicely for the games I tried, but the demos run slow.

This is my first AmigaWorld.net post from my MorphOS machine. Definitely having fun setting this up!

Thanks for this advice regarding UADE and the SDK link. I have tried out Sid4Amiga tonight and it works great. I will try the other things tomorrow hopefully and see how I get on.

@all

I uploaded a updated screenshot of MorphOS build progress on Flickr now possible easily via SnagIt and uploaded via Flickr from MorphOS. In case you can't tell I am a little bit excited about it - lots of fun getting everything loaded and setup. Thanks for all your help so far.

Time for bed - after midnight here in AU now.

-double

It's documented in some of their recent demos. There's also an option -wide that may be useful if you have a widescreen monitor and have a 640x380 screenmode defined (IIRC).

Download "Grunch" from Guido Mersmann www.geit.de, it's an useful package manager

Just as a sidenote, i suggest you go to OWB directory and run the "Install Fonts" script. It will download WebCore fonts that are more suited for web browsing than the default ones coming with MorphOS.

Thanks for this mate - the -double command switch works a treat for the Elude demos - perfect!

I am downloading Grunch now and will try it out tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

I just noticed your message ( just before I headed to bed) so I have downloaded the fonts as suggested and it makes a huge difference to OWB rendering web pages - so much better.

Sorry for being a bit quiet on resolving the issues on here - I have been a bit distracted with the A2000 1.3 ide hd boot issue I have been working on and detailed in another topic - I aim to get back to the MorphOS setup shortly...

Hi All,

I have been busy working on MorphOS over the last day or so.

Been really enjoying it and so I decided to pay and register MorphOS. Got the key today and hopefully now the annoying requester will leave me alone so I can enjoy playing with it for longer than 30 minutes...

I installed Grunch and it appears to work well - I have now installed the SDK, Weather display (Wetter), PowerSDL, many missing libraries and Sid4Amiga, which works well. I am curious why the Grunch database needs to be rebuilt again if Grunch is run from the folder it is in rather than a shortcut in the dock (which is where I usually run it from)

Also installed Frodo, DOSBox, Schismtracker, Apache, CTorrent and Beehive. SimpleMail works ok with Gmail once AmiSSL v1 and V3 are installed (I read this solution on a forum).

Still disappointed with the delitracker file format support (thanks for the tips though!), and will try shortly to get AmigaOS3 Delitracker working on MorphOS, as I had it working on OS4 previously via AHI replayer.

I have some more questions if anyone is able to help me:

1. I installed UAE4All, but it only runs in a tiny 320x200 window. I read somewhere that the normal F12 key to toggle full screen has been changed in the MorphOS version to show the disk status at the bottom of the screen. How do I run UAE4All in full screen?

2. I downloaded GLQuake and added my PC data files for it - when it runs it opens a new screen and is loading files etc, but when it comes to show the intro screen (menu) the screen goes black and freezes - Any ideas?

3. I get a similar frozen screen result too for running Return To Castle Wolfenstein after adding the data files, although I suspect that it maybe because the eMac built in gfx card is not enough to run it - has anyone got it working on an eMac?

4. AmiPodder doesn't run - when I run it, it comes up with a output screen saying "Command return 5/1: This space was intentionally left blank". This makes troubleshooting pretty hard! Any idea what the problem could be?

5. VNC Server guide talks about setting up Miami to support incoming web traffic but I can't find where to edit the settings it refers to. I have done this type of config previously in AmigaOS under AmiTCP but I have no idea where to look on MorphOS. I want to be able to vnc connect to the MorphOS machine...please help!

6. Trying to download Battle of Wesnoth torrent for MorphOS but it looks like no one is seeding (or beehive isnt working)..Is there a direct file link?

Thanks again for your help and advice so far - it's been great!

Catcha,
Epsilon

Config files are similar to amitcp and they're located in env:sys/net/. Remember to save to envarc: too for permanent changes.

Hmh... it used to be on Wesnoth's official pages, but can't see it there anymore with a quick look. I think the latest version is named wesnoth-1.8.lha... if you can't find it from the net, I might upload it somewhere temporarily.

About Quake and RTCW - eMac has only 32 MB of video RAM, then if you want to run those games, some preparations are needed.
1. Close all screens except Ambient.
2. For Ambient screen disable "Enhanced Display".
3. Set Ambient wallpaper to solid color.
All these steps increase video RAM amount available for the game. After making them I'm able to play both the games on Mac mini 1.42 GHz, which has 32 MB video RAM as well.

As for Battle for Wesnoth, I'm just uploading the archive to MorphOS Files. Will take some time with my poor uplink, but should be available in a few hours.
