WinUAE jumpy mouse under VirtualBox

Hi all!

Today I installed AmigaOS3.9 under WinUAE2.5.0 under Windows7/32 under Virtual Box4.2 under Linux Ubuntu11.

In other Words:

I run Linux Ubuntu, installed in Virtual Box a copy of Windows7, where I installed WinUAE with my AmigaOS.

My problem now is that the mouse is extremely fast and inaccurate when using "PS/2 Mouse". "Windows Mouse" jumps only on the Y-axis, and "HID-confrom Mouse" is dead.
These are set under I/O Ports.
The actual "Input" Configuration doesnt seem to do anything.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
The mouse is fine under both, Linux and Virtual Box+Windows.

There same setup of WinUAE/Configuration/AmigaOS runs perfectly fine on my other Windows7/64 machine, means my AmigaOS installation is fine too.

Is there any other way to get AmigaOS on Linux?

I have tried UAE, but it seems to lack JIT support. Unfortunately, I need quite some CPU power, plus 1920x1080 + 16bit Audio (AHI).
I also tried E-UAE, but it segfaults instantly.

@Wanderer

Yes JIT is not working on 64bit, only 32bit.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Yes, Linux is Unbuntu on a 64bit machine. That would explain the missing JIT.

But can anyone imagine what's the problem with the mouse on my VirtalBox+Windows+WinUAE solution?

@Wanderer

JIT should still work on a 32bit installation of Windows, regardless of host machine(not vm). Winuae is using the 32bit virtual machine windows so no reason why it shouldnt work

Its probably coz your doing two fake mouse controls, and the VirtualBox inbuilt ps2 passthough is screwing things up(as VirtualBox Additions has a custom mouse driver). Are you able to use Host USB in the linux virtual, I know you can on windows. So the client(Win7) obtains the usb mouse detectly from the host(this may require two mice).

@TheAMIgaOne

Also WiNE(WINdows Environment) may work better than a virtualbox

@TheAMIgaOne

I havent tried WINE because some websites reported low compatibelity with WinUAE,
and I need the full things (JIT, RTG, AHI).
But it might be worth to look at.

The JIT does not work under UAE (!=E-UAE and !=WinUAE) on 64bit Linux. The JIT works of course under WinUAE. E-UAE just crashed on my machine.

WinUAE has a virtual mouse driver option, I will try this tomorrow. Dont know how I could overlooked this settings...

@resle

Thanks, I will check out FS-UAE.

I found a solution to the problem above, its the "virtual mouse driver" setting that forces the mouse to follow the host's mouse.
However, there are a couple of other glitches, e.g. Solid Window Moving via MCP doesnt work anymore and some other things. So I cannot really recommend Virtual Box as a solution to run WinUAE on Linux.
I might also checkout WINE, but there might be DirectX related problems.

Thanks for all suggestions.

@Wanderer

I do not have the link now but, IIRC, one can add the needed directx components to wine from Windows installation.
(someone should update the WineHQ info)

Winuae works under wine. I have used it and performs nicely on my dualcore 2.66 macbook pro.

@resle

I checked out FS_UAE.

Was pretty easy to install and run my Workbench on it, compatibelity is good (AfAOS works too), but it is unusable slow under RTG high resolution.

Is there any way to get it fast @1920x1200x32?
Also, 16bit AHI seems to be missing. I guess I need Paula Emulation for Sound output.

All-in-all, this clearly targets games, not productive Amiga systems.

.. so WINE + WinUAE is still to try...

@Wanderer

WINE + WinUAE works fine. Its more compatible (Mouse, ScreenSwitching) than VirtualBox+Windows+WinUAE.

Only disadvantage is, that, in contrast to VirtualBox+Windows, WINE is significantly slower. While Virtual Box+Windows feels almost like native Windows+WinUAE, WINE slows everything down by a factor of 2-10, depending on what you are doing (disk access, CPU power, GFX power). Other than the slowdown, WINE+WinUAE bahaves just like WinUAE under windows, and even if slower, more comfortable than VirtualBox, and still much faster than FS-UAE.

So, last question, any ideas if WINE+WinUAE can be sped up?

The WinUAE side and AmigaOS are already well tweaked (JIT, FasterRTG etc.).
