| Got QuakeII from Amigakit for my Sam and installed it last night and it works great. It came with a cd with os4.1 installer and did not require a patch from hyperions web page as I was told. It also came with an extra cd that had some other quake files on it but I honestly do not know what they are for. Just thought I'd post this for any Sam owners that were thinking about getting Quake 2.

Well a game shouldn't only work well, it should play well. And QII certainly does NOT. Although we are talking about a 15 years old game, which 99.99% of gamers must have finished around a thousand times, problem is that under-performs even buy 1997 PC standards, unless anyone wants to play it with really primitive resolutions and mess with cfgs in order to lower down as much as possible the quality settings. I heavily doubt that it's possible to have a steady frame rate > 24 (the minimum possible for a First Person Shooter to be enjoyable) even with settings set to low. Just thought I'd post this for any Sam owners that were thinking about getting Quake 2. _________________

Hm... something must've been done wrong with the 3D-drivers then, I was playing the game fine on my old a4k at 640x480 and it works fine on my amigaone. Actually the last time I tried it it didn't, it was jerky and really werid but it used to run fun. The point is that it should be playable on a SAM. |

Point is that it should enjoyable, not just playable, at 1024x768@32bit, with all settings set to max, since Sam has the raw power but it doesn't. 640x480@16bit+low settings is a no go with a monitor around 19 inches, unless anyone is seeking to be deliberately blinded after 1 hour of gaming. _________________

I'd like to know if we are seeing the same thing, and just have different expectations/judgments about it. Which is to say that I think Quake 2 is fast enough to be fun (at least for single player), and certainly won't "blind" me.
I am using Capehill's (not Hyperion's) version of Quake 2, but use whatever version you have. I have everything set to max - except VSync as that is (IMHO) unnecessary & will typically just halve the frame rate.
I opened the Quake 2 console (using the ` key above the tab key), and typed the command timedemo 1 . I then closed the console, watched the demo, and at the point you die I re-opened the console. It says:
660 frames, 46.8 seconds, 14.1 fps
Please do the same, and post your results here (withOUT your very predictable moaning, thanks)._________________

Wouldn`t hurt to install OS 4 patch, there is a reason for it. Hyperion games are done for Classic with PPC card and can work to some extend because of OS compatibility. However, Hyperion game patches are more then welcome, done for Great War and Q2, Shogo and Heretic II needs it and don`t forget they have promised Gorky 17 and SIN but became silent of it since they started the OS 4 adventure.
Now, it would be great when 3D driver is done to finish Gorky and SIN so we can have some decent show off and game to play, as well as patches for games. A lot of work for small company, same as Acube, but hope they will do it. I am using Capehill's port as well.
Right now I made 2 custom CFGs made for QuakeII, that resemble different settings (low and high quality).
With the "high" cfg I get 16 FPS and with "low" 24.
Furthermore, I have executed the same cfgs on 3 different machines for benchmark purposes: Sam440 667Mhz + M9 64MB GFX + 512Ram and Sam440 800Mhz + 9250 128Mb GFX + 1GB Ram show exactly the same results (OS4.1u2 mGL 2.4 with ACubes updates installed on both systems). PegII G4 1 Ghz + 1 GB Ram + Radeon 9250 256MB + SBLive performs a lot better = "high" 35 FPS and "low" 56 (OS4.1 u2, mGL 2.5).
From memory I confirm that with the stock cfg and while amending ingame settings to max, I was getting around 14 FPS (with VSync always disabled of course) and that was the initial reason I started to create a custom cfg with low, yet balanced, settings, so as to make Q2 more enjoyable. Please note, it is possible to reach over 30 FPS, if you tweak and trade many quality settings.
I am currently at work, as soon as I return back home I will post the exact settings of the cfgs as well. _________________

| ouch....!!! I've played Quake3 on a G3 ibook with 366MHZ and 8MB Ati Rage : )
It is not the Hardware and not the OS... they need to make better drivers. I would like to have AMC (www.a-mc.biz) bundled with every amiga but we need to wait for better drivers.... the old SAM seems to run AMC even better... strange world. I hoped the new SAM would just be faster = faster AMC experiece... hmm.

I seriously doubt it, unless it was at a basic 640x480 16-bit resolution without light maps turned on.
The fill rate on the Permedia2 is poor compared to later cards and quake style games require that all the lightmapped polygons are textured twice. Which means that for every pixel rendered you are talking about 2 texture reads, 1 framebuffer read, 2 localbuffer (depth) reads, 2 framebuffer writes and 1 local buffer write at least (best case scenario, it could be worse depending on the state of the render pipeline).Last edited by Karlos on 23-Jun-2011 at 09:45 PM.

I don't play Quake II at all any more for these reasons:
I got a 23" fullhd screen now and it looks like crap on that no matter what resolution or settings you choose, it's an old game.
I did play it through on my a4k with a CRT of some sort, 19" I think.
I played it through again on my a1 with aos 4.0. Never a higher res than 800x600.
It worked fine on a a4k with a voodoo 4 so it should be way faster now but the 3D drivers aren't good so just wait for better.
Q2 doesn't run well on my a1 either but it used to do that so I'll just wait for update 3 to see if it fixes some of the issues that I got. |

| @all Since it appears AW.net is now mostly composed of moaners (who open their mouth before thinking), I don't think I can be bothered to do any more benchmarks. (And that includes for X1000 when I get one.) I'm sure I have better things to do.
But FWIW, a 667MHz Sam440 (without L2 cache) was never meant to be a 3D games machine. It does however make a great little OS4 machine for other tasks.

chris, just to add another data point, i went ahead and repeated your experiment. the results achieved with the same quake2 configuration was 18.3 fps on my SAM. i own a SAM440ep-flex running at 667MHz with a radeon 9250 in the 66MHz PCI slot. i was also using capehill's port.
i'm curious if the performance is better with hyperion's version since the optimizations done by peter gordon. can anyone confirm this by testing the capehill port against the updated hyperion version on the same hardware configuration?

yup. it isn't an especially good result, but then again, for the games i play on my SAM, it's perfectly fine. most FPS-style games -- certainly the modern ones -- i tend to play under wine on my solaris box. i purchased my SAM for the amiga experience rather than whether or not ioquake or quake2 would run butter-smooth.
that said, i'm certainly looking forward to a better 3D infrastructure in future OS4 updates.
