Hello All

I am compiling an Idiots guide to installing samba on OS4, and by that, I mean that an Idiot is gonna write it for other idiots like me

(Are there any? or am I the only one?)

Anyhow, I spent all of last week thursday and friday, getting to grips with how to install Samba on my AmigaOne (OS4) and Also on my A1200T (OS3.9) So that I could transfer files to and fro plus the WinXP PC too.

Like most things, I sussed out how to install samba because I had a need to and because I had asked so many people to help me out in the past. But no amount of watching people do it, can give you the insight into how to do it yourself.

The old motto, give a man a fish and he will eat for one day, teach a man to fish and he will eat everyday, comes to mind.

So, whilst I am writting an Idiots guide, (I am gonna try and keep it very simple, like my Mac On Amiga Site, I thought I'd ask anyone if they have any ideas forwhat I should include/avoid.

Cheers

Fully off topic, but reading your post this one springs to my mind:
Give a man a hammer and everything within his armsreach will look like a nail.

Good thing to compile an Idiots Guide for SaMBa!

@Mikey_C

Having tried and eventually given up on installing Samba before, this is one idiot who would appreciate such a guide.

@Mikey_C

Can i ask an "Idiots first question"?

Is Samba able to connect an AmigaOne with an Amiga4000 over Null-Modem cable?
All my earlier tries weren't succesful, so that would be great, because i have no
idea about Samba, so an "Idiot's guide" would be very welcomed...
...
not that i'd need it
...
really, i...
...
ah, whatever

@Mikey_C

Is this a good place to discuss about Samba config on classic Amiga too ?
(I have installed the Samba server on my A4000)

@Mikey_C

The only problem I ever had was starting the "nmbd" daemon from inetd. It never worked, so I tried running it from a script instead. That did the trick, but it wouldn't work when it was also trying to be launched from inetd in Miami.

One or the other. Works for some people...

(not sure if what I just said makes sense, as I don't have it in front of me atm, but I know what I mean at least)

Steve

edit: no idea if this would apply to Samba on OS4, but thought it was worth mentioning!

@stevieu

I had exactly the same problem, but with Genesis

Even though the assign was pointing to the samba directory NMBD would not load.

I used the browse directory function giving NMBD an absolute file path and that worked.

Interestingly, nmbd will not kick in on my A1200T until at least 30 seconds past bootup completion. It doesn't appear under status, until at least 30 secs have passed.

I could do a 68k/Genesis Idiots guide too, it's straight forward as well, anyone interested?

Also, (I am crap at graphics) can someone knock me up a rectangle banner with a boing ball to the left and the words Idiots guide, in nice friendly letters please?

If you can mail it to me at mikey_c@amigaworld.net

expect the page up tomorrow eve.

Thanks

As I understand, both smbd and nmbd can be launched as daemon using the "-D" parameter,
- OR - as a service, letting the InetD/Miami/Genesis doing the daemon stuff.
You will confuse your system if you first start nmbd as daemon from a script, and have a running nmb service configured in Miami as well.

I have never tried to run smb/nmb as daemon (Samba is configured here for MiamiDX), but I might check that as you give me a hint to possibly solve the trouble I have to access my A4000 from my Linux box.

Same behavior here, with Samba running from MiamiDX on A4000. This might also explain why I have so much "connection timeout" errors from KDE when trying to access my Amiga shares with "smb:/". (I have less problem when I connect to the shares using smbclient thought).

I will try to modify Miami so that the smb/nmb services are not started from there, and run smbd/nmbd as daemon from a script, to see if this improve the robustness of the connection between the server (my Amiga) and the client (my Linux box).

Edit: Well, I made many experiments with nmbd running as daemon (from a script, instead of running it from Miami's inetd) and come to the conclusion that this does not improve anything: not better, not worst. Works just the same. So I deleted the script and continue to use nmbd launched by Miami as it was before.

I'm also getting more and more convinced that a Samba network between a Amiga and a Linux machine can't be stable if a Samba server is not running on Linux too.

I did once achieve to get a stable communication between my A4000 and my Linux box, but it was only after running a Samba server on my Suse 8.0 distribution, AND mount my Amiga shares using a tool called Lineighborghood.
Now, with my freshly installed 9.3 distribution, I'm trying to access my Amiga using just a Samba client, but without much success so far. Most of the time, the workgroup is not even seen. Sometimes, I can go as far as to reach the Amiga shares, but then I'm faced with some "unexpected errors, send bug report to...", "connection timeout", ... So I'm not sure if the problems come from the Samba config on the Amiga side, if I have to tune something on the Linux side, if there is really some bugs in KDE, or if KDE is unable to deal with the Samba port on Amiga.

@All

With many thanks to DaveyD, I have now put up the first 5 pages or so, I am currently working on Page 6 smb.conf which should be up any second. The site is still rough and before anyone else asks! its been written in HTML 3.2 so that it will look okay in IBROWSE. So, no CSS and but Helvetica.

Yes, it's bare, but will add more flesh to it

Your feedback welcome

@Mikey_C

When you're commenting on assigning SAMBA: why not use

assign SAMBA: sys:samba
?

As you're adding to the user-startup the SYS: assign has already been created.
Just my suggestion to avoid confusion.
