| "Kernel 2.6.x - Will probably be released at the end of June 2006."
That´s great and I hope we will get full SIL680 support as well as a new MOL compiles.

Good news! I'll be looking forward to the release. Especially, MOL new compile would be awesome. Maybe MOL audio would work more correctly.

Please note the word "probably" in the sentence! I'm not sure, if I have the time to get it working till the end of June, but if the force is with me...

Well, SiI0680 support will be in the kernel, as it is just a compile option. Or are there any problems with the SiI0680 driver/controller that i'm not aware of (except for the DMA problem)? MOL is another story.

| ?? Didn't you guys have Kernel 2.6 working on A1 already? 2.6 is like 2 years old.. I think I've seen topics about 2.6.9 for A1. Didn't I?
Or do you mean a stable kernel? |

Will this kernel release be suitable for multiple flavours of linux?
My 2.6 kernel only works with YDL and is not that particularly stable which is why I currently use Debian (On a 2.4). It would be nice to have one kernel for both.
(Maybe have a Fedora distribution made abvailable as well ?) _________________ Independent distributor for the Utility Warehouse Discount Club A1 XE (G4), 512mb (Cos 1gb won't work) Linux YDL3 |

We have had it for quite some time, but as a "compile your own kernel".
This is about a pre-compiled kernel. _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |

Nope, Debian rules, , but there was one person on a mailinglist who said he had Gentoo running on his A1. As I recall he had installed Gentoo through Debian.

| tomazkid: Debian is lagging too much.. Testing a 2.6-kernel which has been production-ready for years is just silly..
Gentoo is, however, the fastest penguin out there!

By chance, will the kernel have soft-off ? Because it seems it was possible but no one knows how to do it. |

This is good news indeed, although I thought I had read that MOl couldn't compile under the 2.6.x kernel (not sure why)but if you pull this off (with help of some others) fantastic.
Despite some saying Debian is behind (Gentoo is nice but has nothing more to offer in PPC) I have found the latest Debian Unstable working very almost perfectly stable under Ross' 2.4.26 kernel (which many main steam pc distros still ship with). I also have a disk with 2.6.9 running but quite frankly I can't see any advantage over 2.4.26 and can't run MOL.
Thanks for your efforts.

I only have Debian, but I can't see a reason why the kernel shouldn't work with YDL, too.

I was working on this, but I couldn't access the ACPI registers of the VIA southbridge. Also I don't know, if the power signal is connected to the southbridge or controlled by another IC. Thus this kernel will not feature soft-off.
What about OS4? Is somebody working on a power management implementation?

No, MOL does compile under 2.6.x. It's just that the lastest MOL version (0.9.70) didn't work on the A1 with a 2.6.x kernel. We will see, if it works now.

The 2.6.x kernel series has a lot advantages over the 2.4.x series. For example "hald" and "udev" for hardware detection and automounting. Also the kernel has more generic APIs, which make it easier to adapt Linux for the A1.

one advantage of the 2.6 kernel over 2.4 is automatic modules detection and loading so you dont need to do that manually with modconf.
thats only one but the feature list is much bigger...
@Geri : I wish you all the best...
Is Ross helping you ?

AFAIK it's the VIA that should do the ACPI. It's a bit of a mistery, like the onboard-sound issue shows. Maybe there is a way to access the registers, but no one knows.
