This is all nearly too amazingly stupid to believe it's real, yet it is. Maybe it will spur a new movement- 'Truck Drivers: Let them drive trucks, not pretend to be CEOs!' ?

New definition?
Amiga: To seemingly have the power to screw up nearly anything, eg: "Bill, you really Amigad that deal!" ?

This is truly pathetic, even if unsurprising.

Is Amiga like Chris Rock in this scene?

These crack me up:

"[chief Kent admin officer] Hodgson said he believes Amiga is sincere in its pursuit of the naming-rights deal."

"I do believe Amiga wants to do the deal. We're close, but we're not there yet," [Thunderbirds VP] Campbell said .

Yeah guys, of course they want to do to the deal, that's not in question! I want a 50' Cigarette boat with triple 750s, but guess what? Without the money I'm not going to get one!

I think its just an answer crafted in case Amiga somehow comes through that they can switch gears again. And if they don't they can say they gave them the benefit of the doubt until the end. The City Council wants to shift the focus away from their apparant lack of due diligence, which is not surprising. Even if Amiga comes through they should have checked things out more in the first place.

@fairlanefastback

(re-reading the links in post #1)

Something about responsibility struck me when I read:
Quote:
Ranniger, the City Council president, was also displeased that the council found out about Amiga's demand to control all of the arena's technology advertising from a Puget Sound Business Journal reporter.
"We're not as informed as we'd like to be," she said. "I don't know the reason why not, but I find it very disturbing."

But...the funding (1/3) from the state, which was the linch pin for the deal, only came through AFTER Amiga Inc. became sponsor.

Quote:
After several weeks of discussion, Amiga signed on for the naming rights to the center. Gov. Christine Gregoire included $3 million in her proposed budget. And while the Legislature has decided not to vote this session on funding for a proposed Sonics arena in Renton, the House and Senate have both passed legislation that would provide Kent with the funding it needs to build its own events center.

Quote:
The legislation allowing the creation of a PFD to finance the Amiga Center at Kent received overwhelming support in the state legislature. The bill passed 85 to 13 in the House and 42 to four in the Senate.
"We worked very hard to get this legislation approved," said Representative Pat Sullivan. "As an early supporter of the project, I enjoyed working closely with the city and my colleagues in the House to help shepherd this legislation through.

Quote:
"Senator Keiser and Representative Sullivan were champions of our facility from the beginning and we thank them for their leadership and support. Passing this legislation brings us one step closer to making the Amiga Center at Kent a reality."

I am fairly certain the pressure to protect political rear ends extends well up into the state government on this deal. Such pressure could be the force that results in an outcome directly opposite to the majority opinion here on AW.

The remaining 2/3:

Quote:
Kent plans to pay most of the 6,000-seat arena's construction cost by issuing bonds that would be paid back with arena revenues.

These "revenues" would include advertising dollars. This make the following statement even more powerful:

Quote:
Also, Amiga wants the power to approve advertising by technology companies in or around the 6,025-seat arena, a demand that city officials and the Thunderbirds say is unreasonable.

Multi-million Dollar Investment Helps Close Funding Gap; State Support Still Pending
This announcement provides an unexpected funding opportunity and offers further momentum for the project.

It certainly seems it was in the interests of a number of people/entities to find a sponsor, even if they knew they would likely not pay in the end to help get the state funding secured at the time it was coming up for a vote. If that was the case they just might not have realized the scrutiny that would come to bear from the press.

I expect we will see coverage from many sources, perhaps again on the Seattle television news Thursday night and certainly the newspapers on Friday.

Perhaps they are creating evidence of "irreparable damage".

The bit about controlling advertising may be a wriggle manoeuvre toward cancellation. Offering less because of refusal is another.

From post #1 when the thread originated:

The news was just announced on Seattle KOMO TV that Amiga bought the naming rights.

Including complete quote from Moxee on April 18, 2007, just to be thorough:

NEWS FLASH
The news was just announced on Seattle KOMO TV that Amiga bought the naming rights. They even pronounced Amiga correctly. This is the first time I have heard the Amiga name mentioned on any media outlet since the 1980s. It is almost emotional.

This latest news was on Seattle KOMO TV Channel 4 newscast at about 6:10 p.m. this evening. It fairly well said exactly what was in the Seattle Times article. I wish the media would name names instead of just saying Amiga. Amiga can't do anything! It is the people running Amiga who are giving the name a black eye.

Thanks for adding this to the historical record.

Frankly I only expected this kind of coverage at the denouement.
This is a sign we're headed for several days of news coverage then.

ok. Puget Sound Business Journal's turn again:

Quote:
Time running out on Amiga-Kent arena deal Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle) - 10:27 AM

Some new info on just how far apart they are with closing this deal.

Quote:
Hodgson said the city will not accept any deal that comes in under the original $10 million agreement.
