At BBRV,

Quote:

We bought a few hundred copies of AmigaOS 3.x ...This should be enough to get Thomas started.

This is wonderful! Thank you Raquel! Thank you Bill!
Your generous offer ensures that this (last real) AMIGA can be delivered to all the people interested in it!

Quote:

We will be assisting Thomas at Freescale.

Wow this is great!

Getting Freescale to support with new this Coldfire core for the NATAMI is great!

Raquel and Bill,

I'm deeply impressed by your selfless support of this AMIGA project.

Many thanks!

Is it possible to damage an FPGA by loading a bad config file? I don't see how, because the config file just defines whether logic block A is connected to logic block B/C/D by a switch (or that kind of thing anyway). About the only way I can see you might possibly damage it is by wrongly configuring the I/O pins, so that it causes a short-circuit (between power & ground).

The core of most (all?) modern FPGAs is a large chunk of RAM into which the config data gets copied, so that is pretty much impossible to damage with a bad config file. You're correct about the IO pins, if a pin is configured as an output, is connected to another output pin, and both devices send conflicting data over the wire connecting them (FPGA sends a 1, other device sends a zero or vice versa), then current will flow between the two pins and could damage both devices.

Awesome! Are you going to limit your support to just supplying the OS, or would you consider convincing bPlan to manufacture the actual boards? Having the only credible amiga hardware manufacturer on board would give a lot of credibility to the project (note to nit-pickers: for the time being, ACube is manufacturing Linux boxes), and your expertise in keeping prices low and actually marketing the boards would pretty much guarantee success - the Pegasos project speaks for itself. When can we see $300 NatAmis in the Genesi store? I bet you'd have trouble keeping up with demand!

My understanding is that this will never happen (unless you count UAE), even though I think it is essential to the popularity of AROS.

@CodeSmith
While I'm sure BBRV can spare a few 'unwanted' copies of OS3.x, my understanding from their blog after the Pegasos/MorphOS debacle was that they are no-longer interested in the Amiga market per-se, except perhaps as a small additional market to an existing product.

Thus I do not see them putting significant money towards manufacturing an Amiga-like board for us, even if they bought (owned) the complete design. But maybe they can help out with introductions to the right people (as they basically already said)...

@ChrisH

There are two points I can make... First, my understanding is that bPlan is a separate company to Genesi, that's why I asked him if he would consider convincing them. I know that Genesi is not in the Amiga market, but bPlan could be a different story. If they can sell an Efika for $100, a NatAmi for two or even three times that price should be quite possible too, and that's in the "impulse buy" price range for many of us older geeks who would be the target market. Which brings me to my second point. Genesi has said they're opting out of the Amiga market, but at the time this was said there was an understanding that PPC Amigas could be sold as "serious" embedded systems (remember all those Chinese trips Alan was making, and the talk of set-top boxes?) That market's been overrun by cheap, efficient x86 CPUs made by VIA and margins are razor-thin. The NatAmi is in a different market, the retro hobby market, where cheap x86 is not even close to being the point. This is a market where 6502, Z80, 68K and ARM on the desktop still rule, and users are very technically savvy. It's possible that Genesi could be willing to tap into that, it's not a gold mine but there's money to be made there.

@all interested

We will speak with Gerald about it tomorrow. We will think about the situation and opportunity. We are doing a few other things right now, but we should be able to produce and sell this board. It will be important to see if Freescale wants to use it in some way. We will need to do some research and develop a plan.

We are not quite sure why anyone would think we are not interested in the Amiga market (?!). For example, the first PowerDev Meeting is being held in Chełm, Poland. We will sponsor the Event (as we do this site and others such as AmigaWeb). This event has also been known as AmiParty. For this Event, we are going to also provide MPC8610 and MPC5121e boards. Going ahead, why wouldn't we want to have a NATAMI board a PowerDev Meetings too?

We have four display pedestals at FTF in June. We could have a NATAMI there: Freescale Technology Forum 2008. We will certainly need to find a way to get exposure for NATAMI if we want it to be successful. If we do go ahead with this, we will go all the way!

R&B

It would be awesome if you could make a deal with the developer and produce the NATAMI for a good price. Seems like i have to pile up some cash

Well the DraCo was for a different market, but I suppose its the closest we've come to an A5000 so far.

Can't wait to see the next NatAmi prototype, exciting times!

Well, big box Amigas + third party Gfx add-on kits (e.g. Toaster/Flyer, V-Lab Motion) were aimed for the DTV market.

On Saturday, I went out to the town. Again I met some X-Amigans. They follow this news a lot. They are mostly AmigaOS4 users or Amigans that have been waiting for AmigaOS4 to come.

They read news sites like amigaworld.net, and I was supriced to hear that they knew about this NatAmi project.

I think NatAmi is the LOST A5000.

Some questions that I`ve been wondering about :

What sort of case are you thinking of?

Will whdload work on NatAmi?

Will it be possible to upgrade ram?

How is the speed of Alien Breed 2 3D II on NatAmi compared on normal 68060 A4000?

Is this something you want to continue with?

Thanks for supporting us with this! Your my HEROES for real :) Take Care, and I wish you a happy Easter.

I hope this board will be available one day and I hope the Natami team is encouraged by the excitement that this thread is generating. I'm off to start saving my dollars so I will have enough when this is released.

This NatAmi project is amazing! Not just because of the capabilities of the hardware. But because after years of disappointment and failed hardware announcements, the Amiga community takes matters into their own hands, with Thomas charting the course.

A few questions:

1) Any idea when this will be ready for production?

2) I might be interested in helping with this. Any ways the community could pitch in and help?

3) I'd be willing to donate some money to the project - if there are some good ways it could be used to help bring this project along. i.e. a bounty or something? Is there a paypal account so the community could donate to the project?
